I remember the German Apollo Circus and the Italian La Veglia Circus giving shows at the Schreiber Ground in the mid-fifties.I also remember watching from our classroom, the animals (not the lions) of the Apollo being walked up Guze` d'Amato Street towards the Schreiber.Ex-world war II german heavy vehicles were their means of transport.Regarding the arcade which stood at the very top of Arcade Street,under which many used to shelter whenever it rained,and which spread from the government block on one side to the De Paule Band Club ,this was demolished when the block was built around the late fifties/very early sixties.On the other side of the band club where the block stands,was the open-air Regal theatre where mostly operas were shown.
