GODZILLA (1998) Retro Movie Review (25th ANNIVERSARY)

The first attempt at an American adaptation of the King of the Monsters was released 25 years ago today. It's always been looked at as an abomination to the Godzilla franchise. However with 25 years having passed and a new set of American Godzilla movies that actually respect the character, how does this movie hold up? This is my updated review of 1998's "GODZILLA" starring Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno, Maria Pitillo, Hank Azaria, Kevin Dunn, Michael Lerner, Harry Shearer, directed by Roland Emmerich.

This was my first experience with Godzilla and I still enjoy it. But I understand that Godzilla fans either enjoy it on its own or absolutely hate it.

I think another problem you should touched on is Zilla's death. In the 1954 film Godzilla's death is tragic because he was ultimately a scared animal, plus Dr Serizawa killed himself as well, and while the crowd cheers Dr Yamane warns that further nuclear testing can create more Godzillas. But in this film it seems like it's gonna treat Zilla's death as a sad momment but then it turns into a triumphant one with the characters cheering. If it really wanted to treat Zilla's death like that then Zilla should have been portrayed as a evil sadistic monster, like Spacegodzilla or Destoroyah. Or what they really should have done is have only the crowd cheer while the characters responsible for killing Zilla's children feel bad about what they did
@AlexanderRobinsonMovieReviews
Yeah, I did forget to mention that when talking about the inconsistent tone. Throughout the entire movie it can’t make up its mind on whether or not we should feel sorry for Zilla or want to see the military kill him

What about the Return of Godzilla's ending? How well does it execute scene of Godzilla falling into the volcano compared to Godzilla 1998's ending?
@lewisjackson6895
@lewisjackson6895 Год назад
@@ThomasFisher-jr6bn I'd have to rewatch that movie again and pay attention to see if Godzilla is played sympathetically, watch his movements and actions to see if he's being portrayed as evil or as a tragic creature. But I can remember that movie was actually respectful to Godzilla

I do really enjoy Godzilla (1998) and I think it underrated a bit and I think the special effects on Zilla and the CGI are still good and I do like the human characters and also this was the first Godzilla movie that I saw

It was also the movie that killed Peter Jackson's original version of King Kong around the times of the 90's, until his remake got into fruition.
@AlexanderRobinsonMovieReviews
True. The remake of Mighty Joe Young also had an influence on that film’s cancellation, meaning had Universal not canned that film, we could’ve gotten three remakes of iconic monster movies

It's films like this that really cause me to not like Tristar as a film studio. There's been a big question going up in the air over which is the better film studio: "Tristar or New Line Cinema?", but I think I'm gonna go with New Line Cinema because I'm ticked at Tristar for what they did to Godzilla. They ruined a perfectly good franchise.
@ryandt2623

I'll give this film credit though, it does have a good soundtrack. With the particular highlight being: "We Could Be Heroes" by The Wallflowers.

I subscribed to your channel because you are a genuine Godzilla fan. I have some things to say about this movie. You did this video on 'Godzilla' 1998's 25th Anniversary. By the time this came out I had already been a Godzilla fan for 25 years! I'm 56 now, and have been a fan since 1973, so I want to tell you WHY I can't like this film. After this movie came out Roland Emmerich said, and I QUOTE, 'I never liked Godzilla, but I thought I could FIX IT for the JAPANESE.' I could have lived with a poorly made Godzilla film with a terrible looking monster... IF(!) it was just the case of it being a bad movie, but Roland Emmerich took, not only another studio's, but another country's most iconic character and INTENTIONALLY DISRESPECTED it! I will ALWAYS HATE this film! Go Go Gojira!
@Godzillakingofkaiju1

This. This right here, is why I cannot enjoy this movie anymore. Because Roland Emmerich insulted another country's icon and made it into a joke.

I remember your very first review of this film (which I personally happen to _legitimately_ *love* BTW); you _were_ angry at it. I’m sorry, and I know you were expressing your personal feelings about the film, but *still,* being _legitimately_ angry and bitter at a *film* is seriously *_SILLY_* and *_PETTY._* You have something to counter that? I’m glad to see you’ve softened on this film some (😊). Watching this, there is still much about it that I *respectfully disagree* with you on (I personally don’t think it’s a _’terrible’_ film at all. There _are_ genuinely *WORSE* monster flicks out there after all), and some of your points I do happen to agree with you on. Yes, as an adaptation of the Godzilla character, I’m fully aware that it’s *not* a 💯% faithful adaptation at all. BUT as just its own stand-alone monster film, it’s perfectly FINE/OK _IMHO._ I truly understand the hatred that a good portion of the Godzilla fandom still has towards this film (😉), though from _my_ observations and interactions with certain fandom members, some out there take their understandable hatred _WAY_ too far…and that’s genuinely *sad (😔).* And since I myself am more of a *CASUAL* Godzilla fan, I personally *don’t* hold a grudge against Roland Emmerich, Patrick Tatopolous, or anybody else associated with this film. That’s _not_ me; I don’t hold grudges against people who were merely doing the jobs that they were hired to do (regarding films).

You've got to admit, it's interesting how the design process of the TriStar and Legendary Godzillas are polar opposites. TriStar's Godzilla started out with Stan Winston's brilliant design which actually looks like Godzilla and we ended up getting a design which looks nothing like Godzilla. Meanwhile Legendary's Godzilla went through a few concept designs which look even less like Godzilla than TriStar's Godzilla and we ended up getting a design which is seen by fans and the general public as the definitive American Godzilla design.

Why would I waste my time watching a movie made out of contempt for its source material by its director when I could be watching the MonsterVerse films which are at least made by people who love and respect the franchise?

How do you think the movie would've played out if Zilla looked like Stan Whinston's Godzilla and had Godzilla's traits and characteristics like breathing atomic fire, withstanding conventional weapons, fighting back against the military and being a force of nature while also kept his agility?
@AlexanderRobinsonMovieReviews
To say that it would’ve automatically been better is an understatement. Beyond the design, the original idea for the American Godzilla movie from Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio sounded really cool, even if somewhat familiar to what Gamera: Guardian of the Universe would end up being.

Do more Roland Emmerich movie reviews!!! I'm interested to hear your thoughts on all of them or unless you have already done them!!! I know you already did Independence Day and this!!! Do more!!!
@AlexanderRobinsonMovieReviews
The only other movies of his I’ve reviewed are the two Independence Day movies and Moonfall. His movies are a little more enjoyable because of how ridiculous they can be, but it’s probably not going to be an immediate priority. When it comes to retro reviews, especially when going over a director’s career, I would much rather talk about movies and director’s that I love. Similar to what I did with James Cameron last year.

Hey i got a question of how would you handle the 1998 Godzilla film and if you could what other Kaijus would you have in it. for me i would have the story be like a Semi-Sequel to the original 1954 Godzilla (japanese one) and have the other kaiju be Anguirus with it having Godzilla return from 1954 and is said to be the same individual because to have it be a metaphor of how you can't undo the damage done by Nuclear Weapons or Energy with Godzilla fighting off against Anguirus due to them both being Rivaling species like Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex with it having a lot of dark themes to show how Dr Yamane's warnings were right but its our fault for not believing it. which is if we continue the use of Nuclear Weapons we will create another Godzilla/Monster. it will end with a warning that coexistence is impossible with Nuclear Weapons because of human nature and also Anguirus would be spared by Godzilla to have it be like how Godzilla doesn't just kill for the sake of killing, he is also sympathetic and that is why he spares Anguirus because of Anguirus being in the same position as Godzilla of being a mutation. anyway hope your having a lovely day :)

This was the first Godzilla movie I watched, and until the Legendary's Godzilla movies came out and Shin Godzilla, the only one I had ever watched (mostly since this was the only one shown in the UK on TV when I was a kid). But after watching Monsterverse Godzilla and Shin Godzilla, this movie has become my least favourite to watch although I do still watch it. However, if I hadn't watched it as a kid, I probably wouldn't have felt drawn to watch the most recent Godzilla movie releases.

14:07 Why didn't they ask Roland to do that picture again without doing the bunny ears gesture behind Godzilla's back? That gesture isn't worth getting worked up over most of the time, But considering Roland's attitude towards Godzilla, I think what he does in the picture is very disrespectful.

You mentioned these 90s action blockbusters were bad like the Italian westerns from the 60s lol the 60s westerns were masterpieces even if they were at the time entertainment but they had debth and logic to them and you could say the same about Independence Day and the rock. godzilla 1998 appearently if a rip off and a remake into something that is the exact opposite of the originals iconic looking designs of the creature

How does it rip off Jaws and Star Wars?
@AlexanderRobinsonMovieReviews
The three ships that Zilla attacks before he arrives in NYC is reminiscent of Jaws, and there’s a lot of the first Apache chase that feels like Star Wars. The buildings could be the trench, and there’s a few lines of dialogue as well.
