It's even crazier that this movie only had a budget of roughly $10M. Amazing visuals but most importantly, an extremely well written story.

You missed at the end when the camera focused on Norika's neck. You see something growing along the side...hinting that she has been affected by Godzilla's regenerating abilities. This movie cost them a mere 15 M. They put Hollywood to SHAME!!!!! I don't usually like it when they focus on the people, but DAMN!!!!! This movie was perfection!!!! Soooo looking forward to another movie from them

There's a difference between being asked to fight and being commanded to die.

Koichi is the walking definition of PTSD in all its horror. He blames himself for everything. He can't bond with Noriko or Akiko because he doesn't feel worthy of their live. Or even breathing, really. You gotta feel sorry for the poor bastard sometimes.

I watched the film. I've watched every reaction I can get my hands on. I'm almost at a point of approaching strangers with my laptop and making them watch this movie. BTW, according to the trailer, Japan after WWII was at zero. Godzilla made thier situation minus 1.

This movie was sooooooooooo good, that I didn't even know what I was watching. That's how good it was. The entire movie was a completely 'different' experience entirely. Can't say the last time I was in a movie theater and found myself at times gripping the hand rest as if something was going to happen to ME. The closest movies I can compare it to are the ones this movie gives odes to: Jurassic Park. Jaws. Dunkirk. Star Wars. And of course, the original Godzilla. To put this into perspective, I was there when Jaws and Star Wars came out. I was a little kid at the time, but this was before PG-Ratings and parents were taking whole families to see even the scariest of movies. Godzilla Minus 1 is like that. A breath-taking viewing from start to finish. A roller coaster ride of emotions from beginning to end. The writing. The acting. The sound. The action. Superb... all of them. Only a hand full of films can I say made me feel good about being alive. This is 1 of them. Godzilla Minus 1 shows us the absurdity and extreme consequences of war, throwing a floodlight on a part of our human history we are all uncomfortable viewing and talking about. We have way too many of those. This movie hints in a refreshing and so desperately needed, wished for and desired direction of change. We here at all things NexA.R.K as well as everything All1llA believe, among other things, that Humanity is 1 human being. Just as our individual human bodies have billions of moving parts and pieces, so too is it the 1 Human Body. The only difference is, our individual billions of parts and pieces all work together as a unit to do and perform in a 24 hr day period our every wish, will and desire. Humanity has not evolved to that awareness yet, but that awareness is coming. Soon. Like a child's first moments of awareness of its many limbs, hands and feet, just before it takes its 1st step. Eventually, we as human beings, functioning as 1 unit, will take ours. We got here to this state of technological marvel by way of war, destruction and conflict. Imagine what we could do united as 1... warp speed, simply too slow. By way of watching this movie, three times, the word 'Godzilla' has been on my mind as of late. 'All1llA' simply means 'All is 1 and 1 is All'. I have a license plate that reads 'ALLIZW1' and an email that reads 'alliz1zilla'. You can see my obsession with this idea. 'All1llA' and 'alliz1zilla' are words called 'palindromes' - words pronounced the same way forwards or backwards, or what I like to call 'butterfly/mirror' images. Using this imagery in partial reverse with the word Godzilla, we have 'All Iz God'. Taking it a step further, 'All Iz God and God Iz All'. Just saying. I will close with this. I think the main connection this movie has with me and the audience is that, even the worst of us, the coward of us can sometimes redeem ourselves and become the hero who saves us all. From a zero to a Hero. That is a very powerful message. Peace and... 1 Is All

That's the imperial Japanese spirit. They got that from the Samurai era, die fighting with honor than surrender like a coward. When the yanks dropped the atomic bombs they didn't actually surrendered, but they did when they realized that the Soviets captured their Chinese territories and closing into main Japan. They'd rather get occupied by the yanks than the Russian, they knew how ruthless the Soviets can be.

Opening of the movie the venerable Japanese Zero Fighter landing on the fictional Odo Island. Home of the great Japanese fictional monster "Gojira". "Is that a new Yankee weapon?" Answer is yes, to the tune of nearly 300 newly developed B29 Bomber's and thousands of new incendiary bombs; Napalm. Designed to rain fire on the civilians of Tokyo. The premise of the movie is the "Tokyo Fire Bombing of March 10th 1945". The "Tokyo Black Market" scene, with the vendors, hustlers and prostitutes, to introduce Noriko & Akiko to Koichi is brilliant. The date March 1946, the one (1) year anniversary of the "Tokyo Fire Bombing", it's raining heavily. Ironically Koichi is drenched in rain water instead of fire. As he shares good news of finding steady work, a turning point. A nightmare waking up to fire outside & Godzilla. Another date, March 1947, (2) two years since the "Tokyo Fire Bombing", it's sunny, as an "Erie" scene of Noriko's shadow through the window as she shares of finding a job. A ghostly symbolism. The sudden bombarding of Godzilla by the "Takao" is ironic as the "Takao" was offshore in the surprise attack of Pearl Harbor. On March 10th, 2024, the 79th anniversary of the "Tokyo Fire Bombing" Takashi Yamazaki crew is awarded the Oscar in Hollywood California. Takashi Yamazaki tells a great Japanese post WWII story using the great Japanese monster "Gojira" that people wouldn't be interested in anyway. Harley Davidson, Koichi's "Black Market" motorcycle, and the Japanese Imperial Army was a surprise. As well as many others. Which are factual, done in CGI. The last line, Noriko looks to the side of the camera and says, "Is your war......now finally over?" Read that in Japan, after the movie, people applauded.

The "minus one" in the title refers to Japan's status after America dropped the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and surrendered WWII. Godzilla comes now, and Japan is now less than zero, or minus one.

Usually, I prefer reactions to this film from people who know a lot about Godzilla, however you guys are a big exception. It was refreshing to see people genuinely surprised and in awe of Godzilla, as if seeing him for the first time. It felt almost as if you guys could have been with the people in Ginza wondering what the hell was happening and what the hell was this thing?! I also appreciate your breakdown and knowledge of what a good movie is.

Godzillas Trademark roar was originally a recording of the front gate at the studio. It needed oil.

Yes this is the first one where the story is based more on the people than on Godzilla. But you need to watch the black n white 1954 movie , After that film we get the Vs series where Godzilla is a good guy it was done to sell Toys .it was great to go back to him being a true monster same also in Shin Godzilla. Oh yes most Godzillas in the old films was a man in a rubber suit.

Great reaction to this amazing film! You are absolutely right. The interlocking character arcs between the major and minor characters is masterful writing. It is a gratifying film because every character - even the minor ones has a compelling character arc and they all grow through the course of the film.

This godzila is different from the American films. The other films are awesome you guys would love them.

So many people are finding out what a great movie this is now. Fortunately, I got to see this in the theater. The only advertising for the movie was on RU-vid. If you were not looking for these kinds of movies, you would probably have missed it when it was in theaters. Even though it did well at the box office for its limited release. I fell if it would had gotten more publicity. It could have been even a bigger hit at the box office. I saw it 3 times. 2 color and 1 black and white. Now I am waiting for the blue ray. To put in my movies I love archive.

Godzillas thighs add bouancy compaired to his upper body and his thick long hanging tail acts as a keel to keep him from listing. The waves aren't big enogh to rock him.

Kamiki-san really did great on portraying the character of Shikishima. Through all the years i always saw him as a child Prodigy and now he's Really an Award Winning Actor and JApan's Ace

He is willing to do something dangerous if it means he has a chance to live... Who in their right mind would do something that ensures their death when that action would not even save anyone else anyways.

It should have won the best foreign film Oscar, but I believe Japan already submitted a different film for that category so Minus One wasn't eligible except for FX, unfortunately.

I wish that this movie had an alternate ending. One where Kenji doesn’t eject and dies a hero. And, at the end, we see Sumiko, and Akiko, leave flowers at Kenji’s and Noriko’s, grave, where the two of them share a huge tombstone, dedicated to love, honor and forgiveness.

I’m glad you got the good version of the subtitles. Netflix, butchered it. They changed just about every line of dialogue.

The title: After the war, Japan was defeated. They had nothing. They were at zero. Godzilla brought them to Minus One. The faces of the people in the Ginza attack tell it all. They are defeated and have no hope.

I have to tell you the American version of Godzilla is more like a Godzilla superhero to protect mankind but the original Toho Godzilla from 1954, who was just a terrifying force of nature created by repeated explosions of the H bomb by the US. By the way, you really should watch the 1954 Toho Godzilla. “Godzilla minus one“ is more of a revised version of the 1954 original Godzilla. The American version of Godzilla is more like a woke superhero that is the protector of mankind, turning him into more or less a Barney the purple dinosaur created by a woke Hollywood agenda. One more thing at the end of the movie if you look closely at Noriko’s neck there is a dark spot which are regenerator G1 cells blasted off Godzilla from his breath onto Noriko and undoubtably saved her life from otherwise terminal injuries, which would’ve been sustained by the blast, and are the only reason she healed so quickly. We have no idea what these mutated radioactive regenerating cells from Godzilla will do to Noriko in the future.
