Yo I always love a good podcast! Would love to collab on one of these. I'm a small creator but I've been following your channel lately and love your insight.
Nice first episode! Wingard has talked about wanting to reach emotion heights like we saw in Godzilla vs Destoroyah. I think he really wanted us to fall in love with these characters in this new setup, then get into more deep ideas like some of ya'll mentioned in here.
I think gorasaurus would actually be really cool if you went the route of another surviving Gojira. Maybe he nearly died during the Godzilla/great ape war and has been resting in the hollow earth since. Make him look like 2014 Godzilla but without the spines, because he lost them in the war, and even make the axe Kong uses be one of his. Without the spines he won’t have atomic breath, but because he’s been getting hollow earth radiation, make him bigger and stronger than Godzilla. Maybe he’s awoken by the escape of the great apes and wants revenge especially on Kong for using his spine, but because Godzilla is now buddies with kong, he defends him and tries to protect the apes, while also dealing with the realization that there is another of his species. Even make gorasuaurs female and maybe Godzilla sees the opportunity to continue his species, so he’s hesitant to kill her, but also wants to stop her from killing the apes and Kong. In the end maybe he does have to kill her and he’s sad, but learns gorasaurus already had an offspring. We don’t need to bring Godzilla jr in future movies, but at least Godzilla would then know there’s another.
That idea for Orga is good. Reminds of the film Andromeda strain where a virus has intelligence and adapts from the experiments against it in labs and it communicates with itself across vast amounts of land and space
I think Godzilla would have let Tiamat live if she just left. When she's got him coiled up, he roars at her with his eyes glowing, as if he's commanding her to stand down or else. When she doesn't, the outcome is the outcome lol
FAN FACT: GODZILLA X KONG THE NEW EMPIRE 1. the movie has a theme for loneliness 2. SKAR KING mirrors the humanities greed 3. Scylla and Tiamat's death was expected as both TITANS didn't submit.
40:50 look timmy!! Thats the one who stepped on your parents, hes on clearance!!!! You dont have your mom for bed time stories anymore but now you can play with it before you dream of your dead parents ❤
Fantastic discussion! Very much agree that the movie delivered on thrills and sense of adventure. However, I also wished there was more bonding between Godzilla and Kong as characters. Godzilla rampaging against Scylla and Tiamat were great opportunities for playing with light patterns in communication, similarly to King of the Monsters where Godzilla warned Monarch's underwater base. There's potential for the next film to focus on Godzilla's emotions as the last of his kind and a more protective role among the surface monsters thanks to Mothra's presence. More emotional human connections to Godzilla would certainly help, with an easy example showing them care for Godzilla's allies like Mothra or new offspring (Yay Minya \^-^/). Dan Stevens' Tracker helping out a timid/injured Anguirus would be a delight to see. I was also pleasantly surprised at Takashi Yamazaki and team's victory at the Oscars. Felt amazing seeing them cheer from their seats and accept the award with a wonderful speech. I'm excited for what films he creates next. Your points about the latest Monsterverse film and it's impact with audiences were super entertaining. It's clear you all had a positive experience and would like the film makers to continue with imaginative ideas that flesh out the monsters and humans as cherished characters. Looking forward to the future! Thank you for your commentary
I honestly hope they get a different director more on the points you made, each one was a different film but in the same universe and it made the franchise better for it
I love the random monster generator! I think it could have been better if Skar King was keeping Shimo under control and once free Shimo was an even bigger villain. the lesser of two evils so to say. Would explain why Godzilla left Skar King alive in the past . What is the plan for the podcast? Are you covering kaiju in general? Godzilla in general?
When it comes to the MonsterVerse, my standards for the story telling are quite low. As long as I had fun, it's a win for me. With that said, one of my complaints about the MonsterVerse as a whole is the neglect of any of the human lives in these cities during the fights. Seems like in the classic movies, cites were constantly being evacuated to make sure nobody was getting squished. In both Wingard movies, there was pretty much no way to prepare for the fights, but you'd think Kong might at least make an effort to carry the fight somewhere else. Godzilla clearly not giving a shit.
Different time... In the 50's and 60's, in the wake of the war, human life and social order mattered more. The government was benevolent and death was tragic and movies made an effort to show that everyone who didn't die tragically had escaped safely. Today, well, in the words of Walter Benjamin, “Humanity’s self-alienation has reached such a degree that it can experience its own destruction as an aesthetic pleasure of the first order.”
