Men oh men, WHAT a crazy night! I slept in a traditional, primitive beehive in the rural area of Swaziland... No water, no shower, no "normal" toilet, no electricity. The beehive was COMPLETELY dark, that, when I opened my eyes in the middle of the night; I thought I was going blind. After a few hours of on-and-off sleep, a huge spider felt at home in the candle light we'd put on. Since it was fairly big and frightening, I had to face my fears and take the spider outside myself, while my dad was sleeping like a baby. Damn. What an adventure it was. In essence, I thought it was shocking to realize how spoilt we actually all are with having "easy" access to water, electricity, paved ways, bicycles, public transports and/or cars. It's so hard to put this into words or images, since that's always the case, and you will always think: "oh yes, that's so true and so sad..." But EXPERIENCING it in this way, brought a whole new perspective. I saw the true local life and, although they actually sounded content with their way of life, it's a vast reminder to be truly grateful with what I have. Or, that I'm a spoilt little brat who can't find relaxation in TRUE back to basics. FYI: circular living is a way of life here, not a hipster thing. In places like these, there's simply no other way. It's life.

Thank you for this beautiful video of my country. You are so kind and adventurous! I am from Swaziland and I lived in a mud hut like that until I was about 12 years old. I used to walk about 4km to primary school on bare feet. I live in England now but I will never forget Swaziland because that is who I am.

I know this place. KaPhunga and that is Bongani Khumalo. He's a very chilled guy. That place is Boss. I've spent quite some time there and he's shown me pictures of Americans and Europeans that visit that place. Thanks for showing the world our country.

This is wonderful and inspiring to watch, though it brings lots and lots of memories.I am happy you spent a day at the village with the locals, although it appeared to be uncomfortable for you but I believe it was a wonderful & great experience. Swaziland is very rich in culture and tradition. I am Swazi myself but born and raised in a rural area in the eastern part of South Africa (north of Swaziland), a region where Swazi people are also dominant. I can pretty much relate to the village conditions. We used to sleep in similar mud houses growing up with no running water, no electricity, unpaved roads, pit toilets etc. We used water from a local small river(a steam). We relied on candles and paraffin lamps at night as sources of light. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I am a Swati citizen, but I would say that you are really brave. The conditions are so shocking that I felt embarrassed thru out the video, especially when you equated the darkness in the hut to blindness. However, thank you very much for being balanced and stating that not all of Swaziland is like that.

When I went to Russia with my University for a mission trip back in 1999, I experienced basic living there as well. Not a Beehive with dirt floor but places that had no running water or electricity. Or water but not hot. Having the Momma's walk us to the neighborhood bath house and pouring water into our tubs with no shame that we were not clothed. We drank warm milk just seconds from the cow. But the whole time we were treated like royalty. It was amazing that they GAVE so much to us with what little they had. It still effects me today. I'm so glad you had this experience!!

I am from Russia and I do confirm that out of Moscow and other big cities you can meet the "huts" without toilet and so on :) So your experence was absolutely true and quite many russians live like that :))) Not me! But in villages it is quite normal.

I am so thrilled to see you go on amazing adventures, you're such a brave and free spirit! It takes a certain kind of person to want to experience life from all angles with everything it's got to offer - from basic primitive aspects and discomfort to gorgeous corners of the world we live in! We are brought in here for a reason and who knows if we only get this one chance at this life on Earth... Let's experience and learn the most :) Very inspiring, well done! Oh and hats off to your dad!!! Two adventurous souls xx

I'm curious as to how the lady came to the conclusion that she couldn't wash her hands, because there was no porcelain sink? That's just ludicrous. you pour water into a basin and wah your hands, just as you would have seen your hosts do and your pour water into a basin , which I'm sure they possesed and wash your body just like they do, love! The comment implied these people don't wash their hands or there was no water to do so which is false. We wash our hands before we eat and no Swati will show up for breakfast without washing their face first. It's the culture. Be responsible in your reporting please.

Thanks for the tour. I am wondering where the Beehive homestead is. Is that in Manzini region? At the end you mention something like "at least in the northern part" it is lush or green. That is why I wonder was the Beehive homestead is also in the northern part of Swaziland or somewhere more central or southern?

thats a small spider. cant know if a spider is poisonous unless you know the specie. though there is a indicator, fangs with red colour are always poisonous. but ones without red fangs can be too. size/colour says nothing. Next time when you come across one, eat it :p
