It's hard to say just what exactly is going on in Swaziland without having visited there. The stories about the excesses of the King in the face of extreme poverty of his subjects is troubling, but I'd really like to see this for myself before passing judgement.

Interesting fact: Ntfombi, the queen mother, was never married to the former king Sobhuza. Her accession is the result of a power struggle toppling the former Queen Dzeliwe. Ntfombi was a teenage maid in the house of one of Sobhuza's many wives, and was banished from the royal household when she became pregnant in 1967. Those who staged the coup found Ntfombi in a working-class Manzini neighborhood sixteen years later. In a highly usual ceremony, they staged a marriage between Ntfombi and Sobhuza's corpse.

Another thing -- most of the problems you find in polygyny you find in monogamy. At least in a polygynous situation the wives have each other at times of strife with their husband...in a monogamous relationship a woman can often find herself alone with no one to truly understand what she is going through. Also -- look it up -- the Bible NEVER speaks against polygyny. Anywhere.

Whst nobody wants to talk about is that he picks his wives at the reed dance when they're as young as 15, they don't have a choice.they can't say no. He picks you,knocks you up then married you once he sees you've conceived. Most polygamous marriages are riddled with jealousy and witchcraft and heartache.the women have no choice but to grin and bear it.theres rules.you really think they're allowed to say "oh I wish I'd gone to study and pursue my life's passions instead of getting picked at a parade when i was a child and knocked up by an old man.

Until you know a person and know the truth of the situation who are we to say that these women are not happy? They seem to be making many choices on their own, his wives. One of them is a singer for a living which is, as they said, unheard of in their culture, for a queen to be singing! Our western society tells us polygamy is wrong but 2/3rds of the world says otherwise. We are VERY small on a world-scale. Perhaps if you'd been born there you wouldn't see a problem with it,either.

Not immature, irresponsible people. You may know about your experiences in polygamy but the dynamics depend on the set of people that are involved, their personalities and all of that. It's not only about sex every woman and every man involved are human beings with complex feelings and emotions and sensitivities and each one will need to be taken care of in all of these arenas. When you think on it one ponders why a man would want so many wives with all the responsiblity involved.

Is this about Mswati III's wives or polygamy in Swaziland. Polygamy has been practicesed a thousand years before Mswati was King. You make this sounds as if he initiated it or it is solely practiced by him. What about in the Asian countries where men are allowed to have four wives and even get a tax rebate for that. Who said having many wives is ungodly when the wise King Solomon had over a hundred wives.?

+Tait You say polygamy is a trait used to oppress women. The four wives system you mention is Islam's solution to the very unbalanced ratio of the genders. Islam is very much hated for this, but here's a brief history of how this system came into being. Over 1400 yrs ago when prophet Muhammad PBUH (Peace Be Upon Him) began preaching the oneness of God, he was seriously persecuted. With time it got so bad he & his small band of followers had to flee town. They were later followed there, *a couple of times,* & had to defend themselves. Of cause, wars means *fatalities!* Not everyone *returns.* *Results? Widows & orphans!* *Thus the gender imbalance!* Between being a *recipient* of alms/provisions/handouts for survival, you & your sick children *waiting* for sm1 to get a chance to come by & *maybe* notice ur sick? So ambarrassed to send for help *yet again!* Or *belonging, inclusive,* into a family which sees your daily needs 1st-hand, *24/7,* & acts accordingly? Dont say that was then, today's single mothers are self-sufficient. Cos material wealth cant beat caring loving people. Widows & orphans are thus totally integrated into existing families.

When there is more than one woman, if the women are more sisterly to one another rather than rivals, when one of them wants something they can go together to the man in order to get that thing. He will have to listen because they are all asking for it. If he says no then he faces the women being angry with him and being difficult in other areas (read: no sex; you know how women can be!). Again, we are talking about individuals who are attempting to follow God's Law to the best of their ability.

One should not speak of things which one does not know of. I know many polygynists who do not have a big issue with jealousy, and who's children do not fight at all. Why should they fight? While you may be led by your society to believe that monogamy is best, others could say otherwise. Polygamy should be at least an option in all countries. Rather than degrade women as it does with the Mormons, it tends to free women.

Well there are MANY reasons why women typically don't have more than one husband but while it's rare that such a thing occurs, it is not unheard of. A man can have children up into his 70s; a woman stops being able to much sooner. A woman is delicate with child for 9 months and 2 months afterwards, while a man is never in such a position. When there is one man we all know who the father is, when there are multiple husbands we don't know who's daddy is whom... MANY reasons!

He can afford them, because he is the one an only Swaziland's King Mswati III, who is Africa's best absolute monarch. Number seven is actually a good number for the King of Swaziland. If Saudis want to marry an 8 year old off to a 50 year old, that is between them and The Living God. Every adult involved will be dealt with accordingly. We've got our own issues, it's none of our business. We've got to combat the craziness in our own country. In any sense, child abuse and the like will happen whether a family is poly or monogamous. It is the NATURE of the people, not the relationship that breeds such things.

Religion and state shouldnt mix but they DO becuase those of us that believe in a god or in a holy book somewhere tend to make our decisions from what we believe. So while they may want us to not mix them, it happens in our hearts and minds and it happens in the voting booth. That being said, regardless of any devloping frontal lobes, the law in our society is GENERALLY 17. In other countries it may be less. Point -- let other countries govern themselves. We have our OWN problems.

he is said to be very abusive physically and emotionally, three of his wives have ran away, he keeps 2 as prisoners, literally under house arrest and in his mothers home, then another who is concerned about HIV/AIDS is barred from asking him to get checked, is barred from demanding he take precautions to protect her and the other wives their lives are in danger.

Lea Topcap I do see your points... Nevertheless, I'd bet you are a Christian or at least, a believer in the Bible... As for me, IM African and Jewish. Both sides if my ancestry were polygamous. In fact, IM now third generation as far back as we know to do so, as is my culture. You speak of how African men look. What about Jews, Arabs, Asians and Europeans who has as majority of the known world has and still do practice this ancient and even biblical arrangement? And last but not least, African Americans screw more than seven wed none and how does that picture look to the rest of the world? I say first? If a mild bacterial infectin vinegar douches will take care of it. The others are harder to get rid of. My ex wife had one for over ten years. Antibiotics wouldn't cure it. After intercourse I had to use a special ointment to stop the burning. It was Hell!! Have a great day! Capt. L.

There's safety in numbers, as they say. More wives, more women, equals girl power. Women that share a husband have more time to devote to other interests, rather than be everything to the man. Before you make your final decision in your mind, I suggest you speak to polygynous households (NOT Mormons!) and see how they are doing. I know many who are Messianic AND Christian. THEY are doing just fine. The women are happy, the men are happy. Everyone's an adult and no one's getting beaten...
