Paint the room cream and let the bed be the star of the room. Love how the Chateau is coming along. It is a shame that you are finding some poor workers. Unfortunately there are a lot of people that do not take pride in their job. You are so very lucky that you have Thomas and Bruce.
@fire8345 I live in Queensland, Australia, and I have all my walls painted a colour called "white linen" in half strength. It is so cool and refreshing in summer and warm enough in winter, even though we really don't have a very long or cold winter. Average 9 to 23 Celsius in winter, 17 to 35 in summer.
Abby I agree with you that the black paint in the bathroom is too somber. Without a window in there it feels oppressive. My vote is for the wall paper. And it doesn’t have to match the bedroom wallpaper. As for the Ginkgo room paint. Be careful not to go too lemon chiffon, which can read as cold. I liked the “Hay” of farrow&ball. Or look at one of my favorites: Benjamin Moore’s “Sulfur”. It might hit that spot with the bit of green in the gold, but it is soft, muted, warm and not overwhelming. I love watching your adventures! The setbacks are hard and tiring, but you can do it!
I like the black in the bathroom! It matches the bathtub and tiles. I’d call that plasterer back and get him to do a proper job. I don’t pay people until I’m satisfied with their work.🤗🇨🇦
Hi Abby, You could keep the black and just wallpaper the long wall over the tub sink area. Don't try to 'match' the bed. Pick your curtains to compliment the bed colors, then pull a color from them to use as your wall color. To smooth the plaster without sanding. Take a large sponge, wet and wring out water till just damp. Work on the plaster in light swirls to level and take off the excess. Rinse sponge as needed. Google wet sanding plaster for more info. Blessings to you!
I love it! I probably would paint the ceiling black, too. I painted my bedroom black, much to everyone's horror. Now that it's decorated, everyone loves it.
Your bathroom is going to look marvellous. I totally agree with the wallpaper in there. For the bedroom I would go with the Dorset cream and match the painted wood on the bed then add some pieces to pull the fabric colour of the bed. Whatever you decide I am sure it will look great ! You should be so proud of yourself for what you have achieved . ~ Michele
I think a cream shade of paint would look lovely in the ginkgo room because it is the wood tone of the bed. I would then choose drapery, pictures/paintings to coordinate with the bed’s upholstery color since that color is tricky to match. The bed would be a beautiful focal point. Can’t wait to see what you do in the bathroom. I think of the paint choices that the black was the better option but think the wallpaper would be pretty too. I’m glad you have the help of an attorney to get the rock wall issue resolved. I have no doubts that you will triumph over this obstacle as you have all others. Best wishes to you always, Abby!
Following you from beside the Potomac River in Old Town Alexandria, VA. Like you, widowed very young. Just want you to know how brave I think you are. And also, you're a wonderful Mom❤️
Wow, so many options! In reading down the comments I'm leaning toward those who are saying to paint the walls cream like the bed frame, and have the window treatments to pick up the color of the bed upholstery. The blue of the Ginko quilt is gorgeous and could be used as one of your accent colors around the room, and some of the yellow. Though many darker colors can be very inviting and relaxing, i don't find that so much in the bright yellows paired with the bed upholstery. Being this is a guest room, I'm thinking the less aggressive the color combo the larger the chance of the most people that will feel relaxed in it. Colors can have a real affect on some, so leaning a bit more to the side of calming neutral for the wall color, but hit it with the accents is my vote! Again, Hi from WallaWalla! So sorry your frustration with the cliff continues!
I like the black for drama. It could be “cheered up” with art and accessories. But, I’m also a big wallpaper fan, too. I just love it all! For the other bedroom, maybe match a neutral color like the wooden frame of the bed? You could bring out that gold/greenish color out in an accent wall, wallpaper pattern, linens, or a rug…so you don’t have too much of it. That seems like a difficult color to work with, maybe prettiest in small doses so the bed stands out? You always end up getting it just right! I love your taste.
The black feels so grounding; add pictures/art framed it gold to break it up and its gorgeous. I did the same in our bathroom and even did the ceiling in black with a beautiful gold chandelier and it brings me joy. I'm sure whatever you'll do will be beautiful. Even a deep green (shades darker than the green in the wallpaper) could be lovely, relaxing and a great foundation for art and accessories. I tend toward paint b/c its easier to change over time.
First off, I like the idea of the black and white bathroom, have you thought of a black and white patterned wallpaper? You can add a pop of colour with towels and accessories. Also with the bedroom colour, could you try half or quarter strength of the colours you like but may be too dark? Loving the updates on your progress. ❤️
The black looked great!! I thought because you didn’t have any natural light, it would be too dark but it wasn’t! I think you are right though, the lighter walls are more cheery!😊
Love the black! You could hang gold frames all over and it would be fun to hang trinkets in the frames or some of your bright art, like a mini art gallery😀
@nicolethijs5428 I agree. I bought a house with wallpaper in the bathroom and it molds and peels. I think the bath would have looked great with a simple shower curtain, art, shelves and decor. Oh well.
That gold bed is very, very bossy. A yellow wall in any shade would make the room look to hot and ghastly. Go opposite on the colour wheel in the blue range to cool down the look. Or just reupholster the bed in a nicer colour!
congratulations Olivia.... the back looked nice... put up some of your art work with a touch of all the colors to tie everything together and it'll look really elegant 🖤💛🤍
Id suggest a darker green tin that bedroom to highlight the dark gold and cream wood of the bed, even just on one wall as a feature. I usually find a key fabric that combines all the colours that work well together and build the room around that. Im sure whatever you decide it will be fabulous, trust your judgement and dont let the colour scare you too much.
Black paint beautiful. Don’t make decision until you have accessories like shower curtain rugs paintings etc. go to opposite color wheel for the couch fabric! Peacock blue would be beautiful !
I completely agree with you on the black, gold accents, gold frames , shower curtain in white/gold/black design = Gorgeous! Also agree with Peacock blue with that beautiful sofa. I really think the soft yellows or even the golds in paint colors will make that sofa almost grimey looking.
When you gave the 3 options for the bathroom, I immediately said wallpaper! I think the black experiment makes the ceiling feel lower for some reason. I guess the cliff is going to be an on going saga. Enjoy your time with Olivia!
I love the black especially with a brass antique chandelier, a gold framed mirror and artwork. For the bedroom I would choose a cream or a yellowy cream. ❤
Oh Abby deep breath, it's a work in progress for sure. I believe you were correct getting the attorney, and then you can decide the next step to rectify the cliff issue. Boy, so do you think that some of the poor contractors and plaster is due to the French way or because you are not from France? So .. language barrier . The bathroom like you mentioned is your space, do what brings you joy 🤗 hugs dear girl and hang in there.... It's all going to be fine 🙏
The room with the crush velvet orangey bed ginko room would be pretty a shade of light pink! The Chelsea flower show mixed this color combo and it was to die for.
Yes, this is such a good advice. I would not go for a "ton-sur-ton" with that stunning bed color. But find a complementary color. I understand that a grayish baby blue is too cool. But please check out a soft coral or a soft terracotta color.
I am so glad you decided AGAINST the black walls! I agree too dramatic.... not calming at all! The wallpaper will look lovely. Looking forward to seeing it finished - I'm sure you will, too! Hoping to see Bruce soon!
AH YOU DID IT111 can you see that the bathroom looks bigger. Small spaces with obscure paintings look bigger because it give depth. You can add some pictures or photos and it will be amazing.
Signed and dated “scope of work” form before anyone brings a tool on the jobsite. Also , I have a french settee with the same yellow green. 1000 tacks, egh, been living with it for 5 years….undecided… Go with the very lightest colorway on your paint chip. Keep up the good work, looking good.
One idea would be to find a wallpaper or fabric that has the mustard of the sofa in it. The other colors in the paper could be the trim colour in the room or the wall colour . The fabric would tie everything together
I agree that the black is a downer! Your bedroom will be soothing and it would be nice for the bathroom to do that for you too with your hectic life! Also, I like that soft yellow--the last one you pointed out-or the creamy one that's paler than it--for the ginko room. Hang in there--some weeks are frustrating, I know.
Third color down on the paint strip is really nice on camera. Idea: Leave just a 1 or 2" piece of the shower nub and paint it the background color of the wallpapper. That MAY be easier to do without destroying the wall.
When you asked about what color paint to go with the chartreuse tones of the bed, I looked at the F&B colors online and thought none of them were "grayed out" enough, so I pulled out my trusty Benjamin Moore paint fan deck. This might be an unusual idea, but a dusky muted purple would be a complimentary color scheme that I think the bed would pop out against, but still be a calm soothing bedroom atmosphere. Take a look at Benjamin Moore's. #1446 Dusk to Dawn, or #1453 Pebble Creek. Then play up the bed ensemble with more of the yellowish greens and creams.
Abbie, I did a bathroom partially in black and 1 Wall was a taupe color and a big 7 ft long dark wood framed mirror. It was so gorgeous! It was a scary risk but I'm glad I did it! Everyone loved it! I will say painting with black is a whole other animal tho...it shows ever bit of your work like uneven lines etc. Going MATT is good with black you don't want shiny and a couple coats is a must. Good job girl!
Hi Abbie. I just love your followers. It feels like a bunch of friends get together each week talk and give advice. I went thru All the comments and the black paint wins for bathroom. Wallpaper in bathrooms tend to curl up especially if no window or fan. Obviously your choice. I commented on several peoples comments so I won’t repeat them here. Others have suggested a Peacock blue walls like in the quilt or a light Lilac then deep purple accents. Don’t stress, you always seem to get it right. Leave the cliff wall to your lawyer. There really are some scoundrel ‘professional’ out there, actually everywhere. Check references and see their work if possible. Those cliff guys didn’t have right equipment, didn’t know what they were doing! Keep Sunday for you! Olivia is brilliant and will do well in her exams. Enjoy your time with her. BTW did you ever finish the wallpaper in the blue library/office? Would love to see it. Take care Abbie. We’re always here for you.❤❤❤
I like the black. But the eggshell finish is best I think. When you see thr floor wirh it, get accessories in colors and possible better lighting the black will take a back seat and make everything pop. I would prefer that to wallpaper in a wet room. Looking good!
18:29 how about a bone color or Dorset cream for wall color. With accent wall with ginkgo wallpaper - cream with gold trim, or green ginkgo with gold trim, or blue ginkgo with gold trim. Or for something different bone or cream walls with one wall brinjal - fb aubergine. With ginkgo pattern stamped on in gold. As for workers- they just did not work out. So the cleanest & quickest out and move on seems best. Sending hugs and rest! Glad Olivia is coming.
The extenders on the faucet should also work for the shower head. They are attaching to the same vertical pipe. Then the pipe would be in chrome and you would have a spare if the pipe extenders for the faucet were sold as a pair.
Matte black would be good! 5:16 classy! Your lighting fixtures will really pop in there, and hold a special presence. What about a chandelier in there?! 😮 could be crazeeeee!
You know, with the right collective of southerners at a retreat that wall could come down in the middle of the night and then become actors about the whole ordeal in the morning.
If you added a bold floral shower curtain and some coordinating floral prints, pretty matching towels... to add a punch of color I think it would be stunning.
Those workmen looked like they didn’t know what they were doing and then just left without moving the cliff rocks either! Let it go from your mind now and let attorney deal with it. There are a lot of really shoddy “professionals’ out there and actually everywhere! Abbie, you ended up with two of them but it happens a lot! Ask for references or go see some of their work before hiring if possible.
Gold green's are tough. I like very bright white and then you could use some different trim and add some wonderful color in your bed pillows and add lots of white textured spreads and throws. Use gold lamps to fit in with your chateau. Other than my suggestions, I would have the bed redone in a different fabric. Good luck and I cannot wait to see what you come up with.
Abby, a few things I’ve seen/read mention not to wallpaper over fresh paint. Also, not sure if your bathroom has a vent/fan in the ceiling to suck out moisture, but even with a fan the humidity from the shower and bath could cause the wallpaper to lift off over time. Not meaning to be a negative Nelly, just sharing so that you’re aware because it happened to my husband and I. The wallpaper did look awesome for a time though, so if you’re willing to eventually have to redo it, then I say go for it. If not, you may simply want to paint the upper part of bathroom a colour that picks up or compliments the main colour in your bedroom wallpaper? Perhaps a relaxing, spa-ish blue-green or something similarly aquatic themed to marry with your fish sconces? Soft blue looks lovely with black and white and beige. Regarding your crappy plasterer, I am certain you yourself could do a MUCH better job of plastering. Amanda from RU-vid channel ‘Our French Chateau’ (they’re from San Francisco) taught herself to plaster in her Chateau so I know you could too (not that you need more work, I know)! 😊
That strip of paint samples you held against the bed appeared on camera to have two creamy/ whitey colours that looked like they matched the bed woodwork - Those colours on the wall and trims would give a nice cohesion to the room and let the velvet bed and spread colour really take centre stage. Glad you've decided against the black - but if you did go that route, a bit of stenciling with white could take some of the 'heaviness' out of it. But maybe another fun project is not what you need right now with so much going on. The language barrier certainly makes you vulnerable but also contractors do tend to try and get away with stuff when working with women so a double disadvantage. I hope they learn the hard way that you're not about to be a pushover. The moment I first saw that cliff dude trying to climb the tree I could see they are clueless. I really hope the fact that you have video of their hair-raisingly unsafe practice helps out with the legal journey I fear you're about to take. Best of luck with it...
Oh, black would be amazing with black and white stripe accessories and the gold you mentioned. You should have gone with your first thoughts!😄 I know it will be beautiful no matter what you choose but I loved the Chloe look.
I love the color of the nailheads on the bed ~ picks up the tones in the wood floor as well …. It would be dark but striking with the bed color - maybe even a little masculine
Re bedroom color ... a few thoughts. 1. Let go of the matchie-matchie thing. 2. Get a color wheel and look for complimentary colors. 3. Use your wallpaper as your color pallet to choose from. 4. Ask Little Green for suggestions, if that's your brand. Good luck! Colorado Cherri
Good luck with the lawyer and the cliff take-down. Hopefully you will be able to walk away. The bedroom color is difficult with the color of the bed. I'd go with just an "antique white" paint and bring additional color in with bedding, pillows, draperies, & rug. 👍
When I saw the bedroom with that amazing bed and pine floor, all I could invision was farrow and ball Charleston gray 243. I know you said no to grey, but oh my, it would look stunning. Good luck with finding your colur. Cheers
