Camping on the Pacific Coast of Oregon can be a challenge, even in the fall. But the reward is a land of unparalleled beauty.

A few hours north of Highway 20 is Highway 6 to Tillamook. The Tillamook State Forest straddles Highway 6 and provides lots of free camping. Just stay away from browns camp and diamond mill as both these areas are for off-road vehicles and get noisy. Also it was probably mostly Morel and Golden Chantrelle mushrooms that people are interested in.

Slim, I hope you get the message that we're ALL saying here...You have developed an outstanding ability to capture natural beauty via media (video, photography, etc.) Your narrations and voice tonality are perfectly matched with the content, not too chatty, but reverent, respectful. The top notch quality of your videos is the outward expression of your love and thought about the places you visit. The last few seconds of this vid. where you sat quietly contemplating the beauty of that brook was amazing. And you brought us there with you. Thank you so much and keep up the inspired work. The world really needs it!! ;D

My sister and I did the Oregon Coast a couple of years ago in my little Honey (my RV). It was really difficult to find a free place to stay on the coast. We did stay at Beverly Beach State Park one night, which was very nice, but very expensive. Makes me appreciate our BC campgrounds more. All in all, we've found Oregon to be , shall we say...'unfriendly' to travellers looking to escape the 'norm' and spend time enjoying their state. Too bad, because it is a gorgeous area.

I even tried St Vincent de Paul which ostensibly has a program where us campers can park overnight in church parking lots etc but they couldn't be bothered, it's really overwhelming- if you're not hotel fodder or absolutely destitute there's no middle ground for frugal travelers who enjoy the outdoors but the rest stops.

Great video as usual. Indeed everyone likes different things. Although I grew up and lived in Ponderosa pine country in the Interior of BC I have lived on Vancouver Island this whole century so far. I love the moss and ferns etc, so much I have not been off island in 9 years. One trip through the rest of the province next year upon retiring, then back to explore every nook and cranny of my beautiful island. Really have no desire to go anywhere else anymore. I will rekindle memories of other places through you and others. Thanks for the brilliant content Slim.

Wonderful and informative video, Slim. One thing you missed were the fabulous art deco bridges along the coast hiway. All built by one man: Conde McCullough, head of the Oregon highway department during the twenties and thirties. Still in good shape and considered to be masterpieces of engineering art by many.

I live on the Oregon coast and totally agree it is a beautiful place! Yep, tough to find "free" camping here. I really enjoy watching your videos, very well crafted and photographed! Keep up the excellent work! On a brief side note, the giant tree you showed and mentioned that it was a spruce, probably is not. The bark looks like a very old douglas fir, definitely a "grandpa". Thanks again for sharing your travels with us!

Free along any coast seems to be a problem. Try living free on coastal Florida, Georgia, SC, NC and you will drive a long way. We can barely find beaches to walk our dog on for a few hours. We lived in Myrtle Beach SC about a block and a half from the ocean. I could hear the surf at night. Still had to use special walkways to go surf fishing. Even then at high tide was harassed by motel employees as if they owned the beaches. Not a political rant but one of social restrictions. Put lots of people together and "travelers must keep traveling", or pay to stay.

The southern half of the Oregon coast is far less populated than the northern half. A few, not tons, more boondocking spots available. Thanks for the Hwy 20 videography. I also love Hwy 138 from Roseburg to Diamond Lake/Crater Lake along the North Fork Umpqua River. Tons of falls and USFS campgrounds that are $10/night, almost empty and safe.

Your videos just get better and better, I think this one’s my favorite! The clarity in your filming and editing are amazing. And you have a great voice, I hope someone with more importance than me sees that in you. There’re plenty of campsites in Washington state that have been closed in the past few years. If you watch Nomadic Fanatic he talks about this and being from WA he knows a lot of places to go. You cracked me up with ‘go ask Alice kind of mushrooms.’ Hahaahaaa

I do not believe I have ever seen a video short that captures coastal Oregon as well as this. The nature that awaits is astounding as is the remarkable and mostly unfriendly semi-mobile subculture that dots the landscape. That lifestyle seems to have begun around the summer of love and has never left. I used to visit the Oregon coast yearly yet by the 1980's had preferred to boondock elsewhere. Perhaps this is why I am drawn so strongly to central and eastern Oregon and the semi-arid lands of the southwest. I was quite relieved when you joined Hwy 20 and escaped eastward. Thanks for taking us along on this latest adventure Slim.

I grew up in Oregon. Free camping along the Oregon coast has been gone for many many decades. There are back roads and old mountain roads in the coat range, but how safe they are who knows any more. Free camping is pretty much found in central and eastern Oregon now. Oregonians like to fence everything in and own it. I do enjoy your video's very much. This one reminded me of home. I spent a lot of my childhood on the coast. Now I live in Idaho. Big change, but a lot easier to boon dock and camp by a long shot.

Fantastic. It does get rainy and stormy there, as you could no doubt tell from the twisted tortured trees overhanging some of the beaches. And the many streams and falls give the range the name of Cascades, from my understanding. Your videography of your forest camp was soothing and beautiful.

I agree with you Slim. I grew up on the Oregon coast, and it is beautiful! The full timers, the tweakers, and various other types of full time "campers" ruin the experience of feeling safe while camping. I had one car drive into my campsite demanding their brick or cinder block back. They were obviously checking to see if anyone was at home. I would love to find a good place to camp back at home.

Having some type of health insurance when traveling! Anyway my two cents. Thanks and will continue to follow.

My wife and I had a wonderful Oregon coast trip in our campervan last year. You were right about no boondocking. The governments in many layers have gone to great lengths to make the public go to campgrounds. We learned three things. First, if you want to get a good rest, make sure your campground is not close to a foghorn going off at dusk. Many campgrounds are leftovers from homebuilders getting first choice on the land and so the campgrounds are situated close to these warning systems that are loud and continue all night. Second, any vehicle longer than 18 feet is not able to keep up with traffic on these tight winding roads. Third, most campsites are tree covered, so your solar system won't charge up very well. But the trip was so memorable, we want to do it again. This coastline is a national treasure.

I'm planning a long road trip this spring and summer from the southwest up the NW coast and to wherever the road takes me, so I was intrigued with the first video I watched, and wanted more. I've now subscribe and look forward to learning more throughout the winter as I plan and learn. Thanks so much, Slim, for sharing your experiences and your photography!

BLM land does exist in Ca and OR, you just kind of have to know where it is.... not as visible or available.

I don't know if RU-vid has awards, but tis one surly meets the best I've seen. Plus your voice is quite good with them. Nice work. I suspect a lot of work goes into making these. Thank you.
