Retired diesel mechanic here, almost 50 years in the business, right on. Even strictly diesels, the bigger the engine the easier they are to work on, sort of. Large sea going container ships can be a long strenuous walk just to get to the engine room, lots of stairs and ladders. Once your there, most things are done with hydraulic equipment to remove fasteners, nuts and bolts and removed with a overhead bridge crane. I open the hood of my car and wonder what I'm look at, can't even find the air filter, start pulling plastic pieces off and all I end up with is a pile of broken plastic and a non running broke car. lol

Being a master mechanic in the auto side of the house. I can say by the diesel work I have done. Diesels are much easier to work on. No ignition system to go wrong, much more room to work, not as many needless bells and whistles to go wrong. I tell all who ask not to get into the auto side and go work for a company with heavy equipment. You will get paid more, you will have easier work and you wont have to deal with the public. That is the biggest bonus.

You nailed it. Again. Automobiles are over engineered with no consideration of servicing. Bought electric transfer pump just to put fluid in transmissions. Updating calibrations on 2023 radios once a month. Electrical systems are as complicated as ever. Would rather work on a cat 325L excavator.

I love diesels that's all I own, ran them for years heavy equipment, and worked on them ,keep up the good work

You’re absolutely correct. I find heavy equipment way easier to work on in terms of space than automotive cars.

I see Mechanics that are hating the auto repair because you have to do extra work just to get something apart. not designed to be worked on. Great Job! Melissa! Take Care!

You are absolutely right. I started in the automotive industry and now I teach Heavy Equipment repair. The bigger equipment is more valuable, typically offers better manuals and more tooling to assist servicing. It doesn't matter who you are, you are not going to lift many of the heavy diesel components without assistance and you are risking injury if you are foolish enough to try it. Great industry to start a career in, especially if you like problem solving.

I feel the same, the smaller I am, the bigger the components THE EASIER IT IS!!! Diesel has that heavy persona but it’s really light work when an overhead is your helping tool ❤

I was trained in HD OTR truck, worked in an indy shop where you might get anything in the door. Then went to heavy ag equipment. They're all similar. If you can understand the theory your in good shape. Biggest problem is repair information access and the change in language used.

Some auto mechanics quit because of the way they are designed! you have to take off extra things to get one thing off! Take Care Melissa!

I turned wrenches for 40 plus years and I started in the automotive and light truck for 15 years and then switched over to diesel heavy trucks and then onto over road heavy equipment stayed there until I recently retired 👍👍👍💪💪💪💪😊😊

In a Cummins factory training class a shop manager told me it’s easier for an auto mechanic to become a diesel mechanic then the other way around. 😉

I started as an auto tech. I even said I would never work on big trucks. Then, I joined the military. Uncle Sam had different plans. My first deployment to Iraq my unit was given a line haul transportation mission. I spent a year working on M915A3's, which are militarized FLD120's. Now I'm a Mack dealer tech and wouldn't go back to cars. I make good money and I get paid by the hour.

A good shop has a forklift . A great shop has an overhead crane . The greatest shop has both ! Sometimes an African forklift is handy .

Having over 30yrs experience between light duty cars/trucks, heavy truck and medium duty equipment I can say most of your statements are true. The exception is the $$. Heavy duty and equipment tends to be hourly pay and light duty tends to be flat rate (paid by how much you do). Light duty has the possibility of making more per hour but also has the posdibility of making less. That is the ups and downs of flat rate. From an electronics side, heavy duty tends to be approx 7-10 years behind light duty when it comes to technology.

I was asked 20 years ago to make the change by a friend in the Diesel industry, and I baulked at the idea , I suffered the Auto industry's Dog eat dog flat rate crap fighting for Good paying jobs , for WAY TOO LONG. SHOULD HAVE SWITCHED Back then. I'm 6 years into Fleet Maintenance, and couldn't be happier!!

Absolutely right young lady .I Went from automotive and truck to heavy equipment 39 ears ago . Hydraulic is Hydraulic and transmissions the bigger the easier just often more time consuming. Internal combustion engine are all similar. Just the newer equipment you have to have diagnostic equipment.

You are so right I have worked in both automotive and diesel industry and diesel is much easier and yes the parts are heavier and the bolts can be much tighter but as for myself the bigger the better I love working on heaven construction equipment and semi trucks.

You may have mentioned it previously, but what brand is that electric hoist you recently got? I have a gantry crane and a cheap chain hoist that the brake quit working on. So I need a new one.

can you recommend some good places on the internet where you can get training on being a diesel tech? I have been in the automotive industry for quite some time and would love to go to the diesel side of things but desperately need training. Official schooling is hard for me to do for multiple reasons but anything I can get my hands on I would gladly take in.

Been there did all that. Auto, marine, heavy truck, heavy equipment, air craft. Now I work in the hydro electric industry. Everything is heavy! Tools, parts. However as you stated, use brain and use lifting equipment. LOL, my trainees learn quick. "every thing here is heavy" "yup".
