Definitely make yourself some sawhorses. I always make them out of pallets. You can get a couple of saw horses out of a single pellet

Judy, your muffins looked lovely. You guys have such a beautiful spot up north. Scott, I love that you’re utilising as much of the felled trees for wood as you can. Everything you make will mean so much more to you both. Your talent never ceases to amaze me. Loved seeing the Roos again 😊

Scott, just want to thank you for taking the time me to put together a video journal of the realization of a life long dream. I hail from the Los Angeles area in decadent liberal So Cal and find myself living vicariously through you and your wife. My wife and I are empty nesters as well and look forward to holidays. Enough of my babbling g on, just wanted to let you know now you’re appreciated. Cheers.

Hey Mate ,That’s life living in the Tropics. Where does your water in the Creek end up. In the Herbert? 🤔How do you find the Husky chainsaw v the Stihl. Had a Husky when living in Mount Isa and it couldn’t cope with the heat. Overheated 🥵 three times and seized. Got rid of it and got a Stihl and haven’t looked back 👍😁
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 7 месяцев назад
Our creek goes into the Wild River and that goes into the Milstream. I'd say I prefer the Stihl (I have three ;) My Husky hasn't overheated but it has given me a little trouble tuning it. The Stihl saws just keep powering through with the normal basic maintenance. Rock Solid.@@johnjordan4647

Hey Scott, I’m really loving following your off-grid journey, it’s been inspirational. One tip I can share re. the chainsaw mill (and I’m not trying to teach you how to suck eggs), if you attach a small hand winch to the frame of the mill, it takes a whole lot of effort out of each cut. You just anchor it to a star picket or a tree about a foot out from the end of the log and slowly wind it in. Any reduction of physical labour in your humid climate would help, I’m guessing.
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious

The winch is a good idea. Working at ground level is not much fun either so anything to make it easier is welcome. Thanks for your advise!

Greeting from Bundy! Great Video, slabbing in this weather is not easy.,did that on spotted gum with a 660 and similar setup on muliple logs making 4x2's for a shed. Most people don't appreciate how hard our hardwood is here. Its so slow to mill and hot hard work. for reference for those interested: American oak weighs in at 760 kg per m3. Grey box weighs in at 1105 kg per m3 - both at 12% moisture.. your property is shaping upwell. Thanks for the Video, take care up there.

The saga continues, and I'm glad it's still ongoing, Scott. When you were working in the log pile all I could think about was snakes. Perfect bivouac for them. Regardless, my mouth watered when Mrs. Turner presented her most recent recipe experiment, the raspberry-blueberry-coconut combination. Well done! I still can't comment enough about your extraordinary ingenuity and industriousness. I get tired just watching but truly admire your work ethic. Big family gathering was great to see. Everyone looked happy. Not an easy thing to do, look happy, in these times. Thank you for the update, Scott! All very interesting - the change from so dry to so wet, the chainsaw mill and the hardwood, and the wildlife. Since I live in New Hampshire and have never seen a kangaroo in the wild, do you have to be careful at all being around them - I mean they all seemed relaxed in the video, but can they get aggressive towards humans? That male almost reminded me of a silverback gorilla being so large and, um, manly... I can see why he was moving so slowly! And tell Judy those raspberry-blueberry-coconut muffins looked yummy!
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 7 месяцев назад
It was amazing seeing the change after the first rains. Today we had two kangaroos fighting. First time I've seen that. The big male's size is deceiving as most of the time he's laying about, but when he gets up a flexes he's the boss. Thanks you for your comment!

Thank you @charloyz for your kind message. We appreciate it. We have been doing a lot of odd jobs around the property; they are not very exciting but they need doing all the same. We hope to get a new video out very soon. All the best.

Always good to get an update Scott = ) You might want to drop a saw down past your next slab end so that you don`t have the struggle with the last few inches.... (that`s what she said...) You lose a little timber but safer than fighting to keep the saw level. You could also V notch a couple of decent sized pieces to make instant trestles for slabbing if its worth the time = )

Thank you John! I like the idea of making a steel platform with an off set height adjustable saw guide. That will get me off the ground and it will be safer all round, well that's the plan. Thanks for the tips!

Mate, it’s certainly been an interesting start to the year up here. Having lived in FNQ for 35 years, I can’t remember a time when we’ve had that much rain in such a short period. I live just down the hill from you in Port Douglas, and one of our neighbours has recorded over 4m of rain since Jasper. Quite phenomenal. My wife and I are in a similar position to you, being mere months away from having an empty nest and with one daughter at Uni in Brissy already, I’ve done the run to help her move too. I know how long that drive is. Not ideal to do in one hit, that’s for sure. I really felt for you slabbing that timber. It’s bloody hot and extremely muggy… looks fantastic too! Somehow I picture you opening up a little shop in Atherton, or a stall at Yungaburra Markets and selling your goods to the townsfolk and tourists. Are you taking on commissions still? Cheers, Gav.

@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 7 месяцев назад
Thanks Gav! 4m of rain! Wow, that is immense. I know you guys have been coping it along the coast, tough going. I have to do the drive again in less than two weeks unfortunately. I need to drive Mum down for a nieces wedding (Mum doesn't like to fly). Yes it has been very muggy. I was beetroot red when I was done slabbing that afternoon. I may again take commissions down the track. I just have so much to do around this property first. It's all good work though. All the best Gav.

Lucky bugger with the Guineafowl they love to keep the Joe Blake’s away, there’s usually 1 dominant male in a mob, our local big Roo’s name is David, he jumped in front of my brand new Triton (9 days old) and did $12k damage but he’s still hanging around living his best life, I’m sure we’ll have quite a few joeys this year too, we had a pretty flyer with a full pouch out the back yesterday with 2 boomers (1 was David and he’d be close to 6ft). Tell Jude that shelf will cost her $350, we paid $1880 for a live edge desk top and 2 kitchen shelves in spotted gum.

We love having the Guineas run around. They are a neighbour's but they free roam all over. The big guy just hangs around for a few weeks, does his thing and disappears. Yep then we get all these cute Joeys. I'll tell Judy :), then I bet she gives me a bill for all those cakes!

Thank you for another great one, Scott! Curious if you've considered contour-trenching to mitigate runoff and rehydrate your land? It'd surely reduce the severity of your dry season's effects. I've started installing check dams in the eroded gulley beside our driveway. It's amazing how quickly it silts in to reverse erosion damage and how much water it holds back to soak in over a day or two. All the best, Andrew

Cheers Andrew! I have one contour trench above where your shed house is but I still need to do much more for improved diversion. We may use some of the logs to help with that. Much to do, as you know for sure :) take care and all the best!

getcha self a carbide blade for that little chainsaw Scotty, I get a good 2~3 seasons out of them cutting firewood here aussie hardwood with a core full of ant poo. Was using regular chains killing a good 5 of them each season not to mention the hours in sharpening them and changing them out several times each session, Id imagine around $200ish for one that long. Might be able to find a specialist sharpener to modify the teeth for rip cutting for your slabbing cuts. I can see a fair bit of mowing in your future looking at them grasses!
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 7 месяцев назад
I have a smaller Stihl (64cc) with the Carbide and it is my new go to saw for clearing that big pile of junk so I can get to the trunks. Yes great blade, so I'll check the prices for the slabber. I've also got a shorter bar which probably makes more sense for these trunks. running 10 degrees on the teeth. Thanks heaps for the tips! Yes gotta love the mowing ;)

A 35% rent increase? 😮 Rent here has skyrocketed with the home prices but year over year rent can only increase a fraction of that. Certainly makes my happy that my mortgage is paid and only have monthly bills and property tax now but it’s nearly impossible for my daughters to enter the housing market.

Our youngest was staying at Unilodge in Southbank (Brisbane) right near the Universities. They have been having rent increases year on year (Rented the same apartment for our son for a total of 4 years). This year wanted a 43% increase, so we left. It's nuts.
