Such a brilliant video! I feel like I’m there having a chat with you. I’m always so in awe of your drive and hard work and I love that you are showing people that med school is do-able as a parent. I also love the fact that coming into the medical profession with a little one gives you a different perspective compared to other medical students and you can use that to your advantage and to help patients in a different way. Can’t wait to see more videos, I’m sure you’ve got loads more to share 🙌

This has been so wonderful to watch! I’m just starting the second year of my BA(Hons) and have been really interested in pursuing medicine as a graduate and was so concerned about how it would work as I currently have a toddler at home but I’m so glad to hear that it can be done 🙈

I'm so pleased that this video has been created. I'm currently in my penultimate year of BSc Hons Biology and about to apply to medicine this autumn. I'm 29 with 2 children, and have been pursuing the dream for my entire life, but poor health held me back during my final school years. So after meeting my husband and having babies I knew I had to push for it. I started with a BSc as I just couldn't take a step backwards to redo my A levels, but it also meant I could do it through the Open University and spend time raising babies. As luck would have it, if all goes as I plan, my youngest will start school when I start medicine, so it will work out quite nicely. Please keep posting. I'll really enjoy your perspective.

Thanks, Tanya. It's not an easy journey but just keep going, keep your focus and you will get there. I'll post more videos about my journey. Additionally, my friend Sarah who commented above makes videos you might find helpful also!

I don't know how you did it. Amazing. Really is. How are your hours in the first and second years after graduation during internship?

Largely okay. I made sure I had a community rotation each year which gave me 4 months of mostly 9-5s with minimal on calls. The other two rotations each year were busier with nights, weekends and on calls. Its an average of 48. hours per week but you can do up to 72 hours in a week- though this was rare and only happened for me when I was doing medical on calls in winter. That was quite tough and I felt like I was missing my boy and never leaving the hospital. The second year was much easier and I got paid more for generally less hours (rotations year 1- cardiac surgery, haematology and psychiatry year 2 abs and gynae, geri 's and ENT) On balance, I'd say it wasn't too bad at all and I worked Full time. Hope this helps!

Did you have a plan B? Also, did you have much of a commute to uni? How did you fair dropping off and collecting your child from school? Also, how did you manage to cram in exercise etc?

Hi, I'm so sorry I didn't see this comment. I didn't have a plan B, I was certain I would keep going until I got there. My commute took around an 40-60 mins depending on traffic door to door. In terms of drop offs, my son was in nursery then so they'd keep him until 6-6.30 if need be. I tended to leave med school around 4-.4.30ish each day to get there. I never studied at weekends really so exercise took the form of walks and playing with my son, I didn't have much time for myself, especially when I was a single parent.

Does that 60 hours of study include the hours you're actually at school? Thanks for the video.

Is there ageism in medical training? have you met older med students
@TheSurgicalDoctor
@TheSurgicalDoctor День назад
There is ageism sadly but it doesn't stop most people. There was a chap in his forties in my class at med school. It's doable!
