Yup. Money laundering.

For a while there was a Chinese food place in my city that was an obvious money laundering front. It was virtually empty during most dinner hours. Everyone who went there noticed it because they family that ran it was always surprised when they actually have a customer. It always took like an hour to get food from there because the couple that ran it literally had to send their son to grocery shop for the items to make whatever the customers ordered. Unlike this place, however, they had very good food. It was very fresh because they have to go buy it each time, and it was cooked very well. Also suspicious was how cheap the food was in a very expensive city and how the owners were known to comp dessert if your meal took too long to make to try to avoid anything other than acceptable. They were very, very nice and despite their lack of English skills, very, very polite. I think they had the right way to run a front. Being a 4.5 star restaurant on Yelp doesn't automatically get the attention of police and FBI if they suspect someone in your family is up to no good. It doesn't get you much attention.... but being the 1 star restaurant that literally has the lowest rating in your city sure does.
