It's time for some drastic measures. I set a resolution for 2020 that I was going to use my phone less, so here's my first step. I'm going on a cold turkey detox and not using my smartphone for a week. Let's see how I did!

On this channel I do mostly hair tutorials where I show you how to braid, pin and style your own hair. I recreate hairstyles from movies, tv shows or history and I regularly come up with my own, which I love to share with you!
I really enjoy diving into history to find out how women went about their beauty and dressing rituals in days past. Vintage and history-themed videos are my little passion project.
You'll find a bit of lifestyle content here as well, ranging from cozy chats over a cup of tea (my beloved Tea Time videos) to personal vlogs and home & interior videos.
Enjoy browsing!

This made me laugh because I can't afford a smartphone so your detox week is basically my everyday life! XD I write the grocery list on paper, I used a camera to take photos, in public transport I listen to music on an mp3 player, etc. My phone literally can only be used for calls and text messages, even the camera is too crappy to be of any use. I know that a lot of things would be made easier with a smartphone but I've lived 30 years without using one, so I can't miss what I've never known, I just adapted haha! Also you CAN check your Instagram DMs on the computer if you use Chrome or Safari: you can trick Instagram into acting as if you were on a smartphone or tablet. Use F12 on the keyboard (or right-click > inspect element), on the console there's a small icon of a smartphone and a tablet, if you click on that (and then refresh) you can access your DMs and even post, even if you can only put one picture per post. I haven't tried the stories though. Just in case you try that detox again :')

I grew up the 80s and 90s. I loved life I was very productive and I even have the habit of being online constantly when not busy or working. So it grabs everyone. I kinda wish things were like they used to be. Its unhealthy. People dont even know how to speak to one another anymore. I speak to people and they look at me like I'm crazy. Hats off to you girl.

Even without phones, not everyone likes to be bothered... Do you like it when creepy dudes try to talk to you public? Those situations where you feel trapped in a conversation with a stranger who's just trying to get in your pants for me at least are not fun. There's no shame in avoiding talking to strangers when they entitle themselves to your time. People aren't all saints.

louise lill Right. I’ve found a lot of elder adults in particular need/want social interaction as they’re families are usually too busy, distracted, or only visit with them when someone is ill. Some people just want to be heard and it’s nice to feel acknowledged. It’s nerve-wracking sure, but it’s something younger generations have lost the art of. I’m grateful to have grown up in Texas, where having little conversations with random strangers is a daily occurrence. If you don’t feel like conversing or get weird vibes, just politely excuse yourself, assert more if necessary 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm happy to hear other people are doing the same thing I was driven to do this year. I've never been that dependent on the phone, but even to the extent I was I wasn't very pleased. I've made changes this month - definitely not looking at it first thing in the morning, but reading a book to wake up instead. That has been major. My day starts off with peace and control. It's so much better! All in all, the changes have been really rewarding. I'm definitely going to continue on!

I put myself through a phone detox early last year. What I ended up doing was removing any apps that I didn't actually need, stuff that I could use the built in browser for. I've found that just having to put that little bit of effort to go on social media or to read forever-scrolling news helped to curb the tendency to just fire up the app and start scrolling. Instead, I've started reading ebooks on my phone whenever I've got time to kill. By doing that, I managed to read 100 more books than I did the year before.

Omg I remember when u had the iPod and cds on ur channel all the time🥰 I still have my evanescence and Omnia cds too.😂 Btw you’re not the only one who does the same thing with the grocery store app; I live in the U.S. and I do something similar. One of my 2020 goals is to actually be on my phone more this year. I am so bad about getting on social and keeping in contact with people, especially since after college so many of my friends are spread out over the country. It’s neat to see this from your perspective of needing less time on ur phone☺️

Here's a question: instead of using your phone to listen to music you're using an iPod, instead of using your phone to read your books you're using an ereader, you're still using whatsapp on your laptop etc. Not sure how much value you get out of this if you replace your "all-in-one" tool with all of the individual tools? I hope you got what you were looking for out of the experience ☺️
@Loepsie
@Loepsie 4 года назад
All of the individual devices don't allow me to start refreshing a bunch of apps mindlessly. The iPod only plays music, the ereader only displays books... My goal wasn't to stop listening to music or using technology altogether, but to stop using my phone as a crutch, distraction and always accessible endless stream of entertainment. Replacing it with single-purpose devices is perfect for that :)

I used an old flip phone the last few years and it was great, as an emergency phone/sms device. Awesome independence, but not so good for typing long texts with the triple-text method. I have seen many videos of people "moving back" to flip phones but I don't believe they ever stayed with them. You can do as I did - get a smarthphone and disable WiFi. Then you have a fancy SMS device/camera/emergency phone. Will anyone actually do this besides me? I have a computer at home to satisfy any addiction to media. I just have to go to it, rather than it coming to me.

I'm born 93 so I'm also born pre smartphone and such. Whenever me and my sister wanted to use the internet we had to use that old dial up thingie I think it's called and we would only be allowed on for 1 hour a day. There weren't much to even be on at that time to be honest so it never felt like we missed something. I'm happy I grew up at that time because I got to experience a childhood the way I believe it should be experienced. Alot of playtime outside and just having fun with my friends in nature.

Despite what we tell ourselves, our phones are not necessary! Our parents didnt have them when they were raising us and neither did the billions of people who lived thousands of years before us! This was really interesting to watch! I defenitly need to use my phone less as well lol. I've "only" had a smart phone for five years, and I lived alone in a city for two and a half years before that. I did carry an MP3 player and a compact camera with me basically everywhere, and sometimes books, as well as using my "non-smart" phone for calls, text messages, note taking, calendar and alarms. When I had to go somewhere new, I walked the route on google maps on my computer, and wrote it down on a piece of paper. "Turn left by the big, red building, and keep walking straight until you reach a little park" etc. Worked great! I'm also someone who kinda depend on social media for my business, hence why I need to use those quite a lot, which makes it harder to find a healthy balance between "business time" and "aimlessly scrolling". But I've found that keeping my phone in another room/the other side of the room when reading a book, and putting it away when watching TV and just knit instead, are some of the easiest things I can do to prevent myself from picking it up just to check it every other minute.

It will be helpful to be able to have it anywhere I go rather than be chained to the one CD player in our house. And small weird question, I wanted to go to the National Opera & Ballet in Amsterdam for Swan Lake, both for the piece but also for the experience. Would you ever do a blog post about going to the Opera? I feel like it's such a special event (maybe because I have never gone) that I'd have to treat it like meeting the king and wear my best outfit or something, silly I know, but heh! I have weirdly been forgetting about my phone to the point where I have forgotten its whereabouts at least thrice just this morning. I don't have nearly as busy life but my drug of choice is Memes... that's where my problem lies. So replacing memes for a healthier source of entertainment like going back to crafts, sewing and writing has been improving my moods overall and motivation and decreased the "Im bored" dreary feeling I've been plagued with for a while now. 10/10 would recommend a slowered screen time.

I use app blockers sometimes :) I rarely use the function that prevents me from opening apps, but I do use it to block notifications at certain times of day (for example, no university emails outside of business hours; no social media notifications during working time; and no notifications at all during bed time!) I also put all of the apps that are tempting for mindless scrolling in page 2 of a folder so that I really have to go looking for them if I want to open them and don't just end up opening them because the icon is on the home screen! I also block non-essential apps from accessing data and always bring a book with me, which really encourages me to read in those waiting moments when out and about

I just got my first smartphone for Christmas. I'm determined to not become addicted. So I disabled wifi out of range of our house and it's only a phone/sms/camera device. Which is all I need, cuz I also have a handheld GPS and a nice camera. Funnily (not), the first day I had my smartphone, I found myself sitting on the couch in front of the TV with my phone playing me a RU-vid video. It took me only a few moments to realize how ridiculous that was. I've got a laptop and a computer with printer/scanner for important stuff. I still eat breakfast over my laptop, and check my email every afternoon on my laptop. The phone goes with me when I'm out, as an emergency device (horse riding). The phone texts me when someone is late to our meet up. That is pretty much it. I can look at the weather on it, but only if I'm at home. What I find fascinating: my laptop is online constantly, and it's also very small. But I don't lay it next to my bed nor grope for it in the morning. Is it just a matter of size? My laptop controls my life, its limited way - I need to Come to it. Outside of coming to it, I'm out there living my life with no interruptions. But it doesn't lie next to my bed or ever come into the bathroom. That is why I wanted a smartphone that didn't spend its days nudging me in a stereotypic pattern, to tap what might influence my day. Thank you for making people think about their habits.

Granted I haven't finished the video yet but I must say using your phone to do something like your grocery list is a good thing. It lessens the amount of paper you use. Take me for instance. I should utilize my phone more for things such as that considering the amount of paper or sticky notes I go through just to make a list or jot down a quick note to remind me of something later. I know you're big on being more concise of the environment so I think using your phone for simple things like that is still a good idea.

Hi Lucy, this was a great video 👍 You mentioned listening to music when you ride your bike. I hope you'll keep the volume low enough to hear the traffic and sirens. Stay safe! 😉

Sinds maybe two years I leave my phone in the living room at night, and not bring it to bed with me, I use an old sport watch as an alarm clock(very soft beep it's perfect) I sleep so much better now and get up easier to! I am not touching my phone until I sit down for breakfast. Highly recommend!!

For someone like yourself whose profession is actually in social media I can see how this experiment was difficult. I use my phone without notifications and im known as 'not a good texter' to my work mates and family - but I also work outside and rely fully on my phone to stream news as Im working -- so I think Id also collapse without it, or maybe I'm missing out on a chance to start learning bird songs or something 🤔

For me, I did detox from IG, because that's what ate my time away. At the moment I still get notifications, but only check on them occationally. I might even set a specific time with a limit to do that, like I do with YT. I do get notifications for YT-videos on my phone, but I never watch them on there, I'd rather wait for getting home and having a specific time in the week to do that. That freed up so much more time to read on public transport :D That aproach might only work for "followers" not for content creators, though... Smart phones are really useful for looking up specific things, because you can do certain things faster. But it's good to see what you really need and what is just keeping you from being productive or enjoying life.

I totally relate to this.... I felt like i needed to be entertained constantly.... I have curbed my addiction by simply stopping using it. Just stopping myself when i reach for it and being very aware of it. It was very very tough for a month.... but i got there. I'm still working on it but i'm in a much better and i feel like i have so much more time now haha

there's an app called digital detox in the play store, you can set your detox for as many minutes as you want it to last, and you can whitelist apps, like audiobook, google maps and calculator and messages and such but not have access to fb or ig or snap (it will just toss you back to the detox screen if you try) and you get points for however many minutes you do consecutively, and if you want to break the detox you have to pay money for it (you set the amount yourself, but you get x amount of 5 minutes of free access )

I like to write my grocery list on paper in order of the store layout as well. I’m dying that you described what a discman is 😆😆😆😆😆😆 it’s funny how life without a smartphone has so many challenges when we got on just fine before them. I don’t use mine much but I have an iPad that makes up for it!

I rarely use my phone and I have never been addicted to it. I have turned my screen color to black and white and deleted all the social media apps from my phone (wich is just facebook and youtube). If I need to check facebook I can do it in my phone's internet app. I actually often use my portable cd player because I don't have music apps on my phone. At home I usually listen radio

I still use an iPod. I mostly listen to TV and movie soundtracks, which aren't easily found on music streaming apps. Trying to use something like spotify would just be a waste of time. Plus, I listen to music constantly and I don't want to waste my phone battery.

It's really not as difficult as you all think. For me it's so refreshing and calming that I don't even have an itch to check my phone. I've done this several times, but for a month or two at a time. If you either turn your phone on airplane mode (if you still need the alarm like myself) or turn it off completely, it becomes so much easier to just forget about it. You'll be surprised how quiet and serene the world is without it! Oh and p.s. trust me the world doesn't need you as much as you think it would.

I think a lot of the problems are using your phone to just pass time. Browse on any platform with no goal at all. If you need your phone for certain things such as audio capture, time management (as well as timers/alarms) there should be no reason to restrict the use especially if you are replacing the previous habit with another electronic. For taking notes, if I recall correctly it has been shown that writting down information helps to solidify the memories. I think that just restricing social website use would be better. For example: remove the social platforms from your phone completely. It would allow for you to still use the phone in information gathering ways and as a music player and camera but restrict the need to check social groups every 20 minutes.

My phone has a hidden app drawer. So even when you go to look at all the apps, those don't show up--you have to swipe over to get there. It's so useful for apps i still want but don't want to be distracted with all the time.

I would love to give up my phone for a week. I got a new laptop for my birthday last year and I used it like a month or two in total since then. I use my phone for all my internet needs. Not constantly checking the news, weather, or instagram (I don’t post, just mindlessly scroll and occasionally comment) would be very hard for me. I also do use my phone as an alarm but that was a habit it started only in the last year or so. I do have one of those old atomic clock radios and I used to wake up to my favorite morning radio show and leave it on to get ready. Now I hit snooze on my phone like 2-3 times and then watch the news on tv. My worst habit is having my tv on but with the sound off and watching a RU-vid video at the same time. My one problem with trying not to use my phone for a week is that I have no idea where my most recent iPod went so listening to music would be out. It was so great to see that you could manage relatively speaking Lucy. Congratulations to you!

I have the same habits, I have deleted all of the apps I tend to mindlessly scroll on like fb and instagram. I have completely stopped using instagram for the time being, and I just use fb on my computer, it has been alleviating a lot of anxiety for me. I have been considering getting a flip phone and just using my ipad or iphone without data, just wifi? idk, I have the same anxiety about emergencies and it's nice being able to rely on google maps or sending my location for emergency.

The most common phrase out of my mouth is "Has anyone seen my phone?" I never seem to keep it in arms reach unless I'm at work (I work in an office) most of the time its... somewhere else and I tend to ignore it much to my friend's dismay. I am 100% guilty of needing my phone to wake up. I wake up to it in vibrate on my bed and it wakes me up every time. On vacation I never use it unless I need it for an Uber or to take pictures. 😅😅

I really want to use my phone less, so thank you for this video! One thing I have been wondering is what to do about the fact that other people will still use their phones manically. Sometimes when I try to avoid mindlessly scrolling on my phone I realize that everyone else is just staring their phones. Of course I can't force others, but I really feel that we feed each other's addictions. Did you have any problems with others just staring at their phones and you feeling lonely?

ok, so i am not the only one that reads labels on shampoo bottles ?! in my household an various others i know, a pile of magazines next to the toilet is kinda normal. xD I never understood phone addiction as i am some kind of digital anachronism. i only use my phone for messages, calls, emails and to listen to music, that is, to be honest, my only addiction: i have been through the walkman, the dicman, the mp3-player age as well, having always headphone on and all the things that a smartphone combines, i still do analogue: i have an alarm clock, a notebook, an aganda and so on.

I grew up in the days of tape walkmans :p But someone stole mine out of my mom's car when I was like 12 or 13. But yeah, I think I use my phone half as much as you do, but for reasons like I just like using my laptop better. (I have a macbook pro, my phone is an android. So I use my laptop for Facetime with my bf.) I have a car, so I don't use public transport, however my car radio is completely fried so I do use my Pandora on my phone for music! :p Also, I do use it for my groceries. Just started that like 6 months ago! My grocery store Meijer has an app that lets you put your shopping list in, and then you walk around and scan the items you want to buy. Then you check out and all you have to do is scan the QR code on the screen and your order pops up. Kind of like the hand scanners at Albert Heijn, but we don't have bonus cards because the app is basically the bonus card. (Plus, it alerts you if there's a coupon for an item you scan.) Moral of story, at least in my opinion: Phones aren't necessarily bad. They can be VERY useful in so many ways. Efficiency isn't lazy. However, I think what IS bad is the social media aspect of it. It can become SO addicting. Good luck with everything! Let us know how it goes! Also, does Robbert have an opinion on anything he's noticed about you? Have you been happier, or more agitated without your phone?

I did something like that in the middle of last year, What I did was to uninstall all social apps with the exception of WhatsApp. Mostly because I was going into a rabbit hole of mental issues... right now I don't use it as often and almost always I forget to charge it up, and since I haven't gone out of my house really I don't really care. I use it when I'm going out of my house to put my music in and my ride app, but that's all.
