Gojira was the right choice to bring metal to a world's stage. It's obvious to me simply because of how good they are live. That alone qualifies them, I listen to the live versions of most of their songs over studio versions.
I often show the Explosia clip to female friends. Something about attractive sweaty French men filmed in black and white seems to make the chunky riffs and heavy goodness more palatable for them... so there's that too.
@@shapeshifter7676 Oh fuck yeah, France has always been badass, they get a bad wrap but honestly they're way more metal than most other countries. They get shit done.
They do sound amazing life, I’ve seen it for myself. But I do believe that their Olympics performance was pre-recorded by them. Which is totally fine and makes sense, I’d do it too. Being able to perform in an event that huge and completely eliminate the margin for error would definitely be ideal.
The final of the next World Cup, scheduled for Sunday July 19, 2026, will take place at the New York New Jersey stadium; the legendary Azteca stadium in Mexico City will host the opening match on Thursday June 11, 2026. It is the most watched sporting event in the world.
My college roomate put Gojira songs on my playlist 4 months ago. Flashforward, I saw the Olympics performance and i was like "oh hey i recognize them!" And went back to that playlist afterwards.
What makes metal bands popular in last years: TikTok (Sleep Token, BMTH, Slipknot with Custer), olympic opening ceremony (Gojira) and some movie series (Master of Puppets, Meshuggah in the future?). Waiting for Spiritbox in some random event that will make them 3-4M monthly listeners band.
Spiritbox got that collab with Megan Thee Stallion. I'll be frank, because of that and the release of their EP last November, Spiritbox is my #2 metal band of 2024. They even got nominated for the Grammys this year with "Jaded", but MIDtallica snubbed. I just wish that Megan collaboration should've been performed at that show while Megan was dissing Nicki Minaj, and then they could've played their own song too and win. Would've cracked numbers for them.
I found gojira in 2015 off a comment left on a Tremonti video thay he wrote a similar riff to gojira. Checked gojira and they are currently my favorite metal band. So surreal to see them blow up in popularity over the years. They deserve all the praise
I think i first found them when myles kennedy did a live of "watch over you" i think, and he was wearing a gojira shirt. And i was like, oh of my fave singer at that moment was wearing another band's shirt, then that band must be good. And yep, gojira is good. 🖤 Similar to how i found sleep token coz of how much Will Ramos fangirls over them. Lol 😂
Oh man, my gojira discovery is wild, i was going to a slipknot concert when i was 15 or so in 2009 and gojira opened up for them, in the end i couldn't care less about slipknot and spent all my energy on the gojira moshpit. Keep in mind i had never heard of gojira before and they blew me away and earnt a fan for life, them opening their set with Oroborus certainly helped lmao
To be fair, I don`t think this was just normies being converted, but also metalheads who either didn`t really know or f*ck with their music previously. I personally already knew about gojira, and I had first given them a listen a couple of years ago, and while I liked their stuff overall, I didn`t really appreciate the music fully, and I never really came back to their stuff too much, aside from a couple of songs that I enjoyed more than the rest. All that changed with the performance at the opympics. That performance was so musicly and visually badass that I`ve since gone back and rediscovered their stuff, and their mosic has grown on me aignificantlg, to the point where I`ve genuinly been listening to their stuff on repeat since, with Fortitude currently being one of my favourite albums, and flying whales probably being one of the songs I listen to the most (along with born for one thing, amazonia, sphinx, stranded, and silvera, just to name a few on my most listened to songs from them). Metalheads who previously know or care about gojira are (re)discovering them, and are learning the error of their ways, I tell ya
I'm in this boat as well. Saw them couple of times even said to myself "I'm need to listen to them more" after seeing them last year with Lorna Shore, but always fall back into what I already know to like. Same I really enjoy a bunch of Fortitude, can't get enough "high pitched/whiny riffs and chugging patterns 🤘❤🤘
I discovered Gojira via Linkin Park circa 2014 when they were having their "heavy rock" phase (Mike Shinoda had shared L'Enfant Sauvage on a playlist he had been using inspo for their new album The Hunting Party at the time), and I remember being obsessed with that song, and then forgetting about gojira for a while. THEN, my dad discovered Silvera MV in 2017 and showed it to me, and once again I was floored at how good they were lol and just haven't looked back since. They are one of my all time fave bands. I'm so happy they're getting global recognition rn!!! As a creative, it gives me hope to keep going and honing my own craft (I'm in the design industry), to see a group that has been around this long that is so technical and structured, hardworking and GOOD, and gaining recognition even NOW this far into their career gives me motivation to keep doing what I'm doing!! yay gojira!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Probably majority of this people was already familiar with Gojira. I haven't listened to them for a very long time, olimpics performance just reminded me about this band. But still cool to see this happening to them, they totally deserved it
Before their performance I didn't really listen to them that much just some songs, but after I saw that I decided to go further their discography and I couldn't have done better. They're amazing and they deserve to be more popular.
I knew gojira but never listened to them. Ive been going throughout their whole catalog since the olympics performance and cant get enough of them. They really are that band
A friend of mine sent me the music video for Vacuity in 2008 when it came out and I was instantly hooked. Became obsessed with The Way of All Flesh album then went back and was blown away by From Mars to Sirius. Have had the pleasure of enjoying all released as they’ve come out since and they’ve continued to mature as a band. There is an orthodox way to how they approach their songwriting with all of the little guitar tricks but Mario drums like his life depends on it at all times. The 2 times I’ve been lucky enough to see them live the energy has been up there with a Pantera show. My fave band for many years, the Olympics performance is still one of the greatest thing I’ve ever seen happen in this genre. They have done heavy metal a huge service. Can’t wait for the next album.
TBH, I’m not a huge Gojira fan. But when I heard they had a spot in the opening ceremony, I was thrilled. And the performance was awesome. I’ve always been a metalhead, but Gojira has never been on my list. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve liked them. But having this exposure has made me, a fuckin thrasher metalhead, want to check out more of their work. Without even being familiar with their stuff, I could often guess it was them previously because they have a distinct sound. Know what I mean? I couldn’t name a single song, but I could hear a song and say “that’s Gojira”. This performance is is huge for metalheads. And as a thrasher, I love it.
5:50 "People got real life real time conversion" Ok so Gojira just said "Wololooo" and converted a bunch of peoples like the priest does in Age of Empires
gojira was one of the bands that got me into heavier metal my dad actually showed me them and said "here son these guys are like JFAC but with less cookie monster vocals" i was hooked and "to sirius" is my jam still up until today
It is impressive to see how social events challenge listeners. At the same time, listeners begin to generate actions such as increasing listenings of an artist, making comments, sharing songs, etc. All of this has an impact on the growth and popularity of a band. And this popularity translates into profits, even without having released an album. The music business paradigm has changed a lot. Crazy times, but fun. I really liked Gojira's performance.
I think about the industry people and press people who want to say that rock and/or metal are dead. It's clear that exposure is king. You put any sort of solid music in front of a billion people, a good chunk of them will take notice. I'm glad it was Gojira. They're just accessible enough to be a gateway act for the entirety of hard rock and metal for a whole new group of potential fans.
3:53 Speaking of Sleep Token and numbers... I saw them in July 2019 as a support act for BABYMETAL. I didn't understand it, and forgot about them other than when that specific show cropped up in conversation. Obviously now they're really big, which means I've found them again. If you look at their numbers on Spotify, it was a very short amount of time after that show (I guess still during them being a support act) where you see the massive spike and their subsequent growth. If only I knew how small that group was, and how large it would become.
I never knew gojira before the olympics, but it was cool to see a metal band on the front stage. It kinda felt like the 2000s where metal was more in the forefront
yeah , remember seeing them the first time in france in 2003 , at the fury fest ( that later will become the hellfest ) ,the link tour , oh let's go see that local metal band Gojira ..and then he we are in 2024
I am currently happy to know that the group is experiencing greater expansion; They come from the town next to mine and they are quite well known by acquaintances in the area. Their performance at the Olympics was a surprise and I didn't think people would be that surprised by that... Proud of them sincerely !
Yay Gojira! However, imagine they chose Mirar instead of Gojira for the opening ceremony .... ? Perhaps not many would have enjoyed it - but my glee would have made up for all else :)
It’s because they’re freaking amazing! I was already deep into metal before the Olympics and I liked Gojira okay. Seeing that performance of Ah Ça Ira elevated them in my eyes so much. I came away wanting to listen to Gojira, and not just Ah Ça Ira! Flying Whales has been on regular rotation ever since 🐳🐋
какая же база. После олимпийских игр я стал переслушивать все чертовые альбомы гаджиры, я слушаю их абсолютно везде и мне чертовски нравится это, не понимаю, как раньше я не фанател с их звука
Yo my boy I've been watching you since 20k subs. Damn your dark circles are going crazy day by day. I hope you're not stress or whatever, just know we love you and we're going nowhere well unless you delete you channel XD
That random nude naked performance thing was a performance are for Lord Dionysus, and I am so laughing at the fact that how you described it lmao 😂 Anyways, Gojira rules! Yeah 🤘🤘
I just went on a rollercoaster of emotions. Saw you mention 'Another World' and thought I'd missed an album so I got excited. Then saw on Spotify it was in the singles and got disappointed. Then thought maybe it was an EP and got excited. Then realised it was in fact a single, but was still excited. Then realised I'd already heard it because it's part of 'Fortitude'. I'm exhausted, Cheers Nik 😢
Today i saw a video here where tribal people (elderly ones) react to the Gojira olympic show. The host tell them about the olympics and the french history but the "liked" it or at least respected the feel of the show.
If anyone cares you can google the lyrics to the song and find a vid with the lyrical captions (or best guess? sounds right to me anyway). Just some extra epicness.
I wonder if the ticktock increase not being as big as the spotify listeners increase is more insicative of the age of new listeners? Not saying it's bad or anything. Either way I'm hyped over then getting more publicity. It's really nice to see.
Gojira Is just really good music, no TikTok videos and this shit Hope they can release an album waking up all this new people, they made good music and with an intention
well technically we do not know who exactly it was who tuned into gojira - It could have been people already in the metal scene who maybe never heard of Gojira, or just have not subscribed to them / got reminded of them.
I started listening to them about half month or so b4 because im familiraizing myself with them since they touring with korn and spirit box. i know spirit box & bad omens because of sleep Token. i know sleep token cus of lacuna coil. 😊
