Because in the manga there is a 7 year time jump right after the Cell Games, and Goku is still there in the story. He's training in the afterlife and plans on coming to visit to compete in the tournament. 🤷‍♂️ So Goku is never gone for people to get mad about him being... gone.

And this is exactly why he'll never be the main character. His life is already "perfect". It's great he continues to achieve new heights though. This movie clearly shows he has the potential, and hopefully they can rework him as a character a bit to be the true protagonist he was meant to be eventually.

I doubt goku would really take the Angel path, I haven’t read the manga or anything but it really really seems unlikely that goku would take the Angel path. As it’s said in the anime, angels have to be neutral in emotions and decisions. I don’t know goku can neutralize his emotions and decisions. It’s just not like goku and not a goku we would want to see, since that would just be him taking away everything that makes him iconic, now vegeta he’s just perfect. He’ll possibly be the best and fairest god of destruction out there.

Anger is not the only emotion there is, angels are also not meant to interfere in human conflicts or any at all. Angels are simply meant to serve their god of destruction and keep them in check. Goku would never live such a lifestyle because he’s a very carefree person who like you said, enjoys a good fight. Angels are never meant to be carefree.

And tbh I see that neutral mindset in Vegeta. As odd as it sounds, he's always trying to Play the Angst filled bad boy at this point and seems more neutral and balanced. He learned to control that old destroyer in him and it only manifests true destroyer when Bulma got hit by Bearus when it all started. That's just my opinion but I think they would make a great Angel and Destroyer

Cell MAX was supposed to be a planetary, if not an interplanetary threat, but the lack of tonal representation made it feel like it was whatever, just another fight. Mad Bio Broly vibes. It was a good movie, and fun to watch, but by no means was it a great movie.

That’s what makes him such a compelling character in my opinion. From the first moment he was shown, it’s been clear he doesn’t want to be a fighter. However each time the world, his friends, or his family needs him, he will fight to protect them even if he doesn’t want to. In a world full of characters that are always itching to fight and test their strength at all points, Gohan is a breath of fresh air.

Depressing things to think about in DBZ: Gohan lost the ability to go ssj2 for a period of time. At a certain point in super Gohan struggled to even go ssj. Vegeta has never once accessed ssj3 nor will he ever be able to do as he doesn't have enough ki to maintain it for longer then three seconds. (Db heros doesn't count, it was all fanservice.) Chichi used to be a strong fighter, nearly beating Goku at the 23rd world martial arts tournament. Tien Shen Han was the strongest human in Db, DBZ and DBGT. Uub and Buu have God Ki, though they've never used it. I could continue on but I'm already making myself quite depressed.

Gohan trains with Piccolo and Goku for 3 years, then trains for a year with Goku in the time chamber in which Goku makes him stronger than himself, Goku believed in Gohan's power more than Gohan or even Piccolo did against cell (and he was right). Then Gohan doesn't train for 7 years and we're given no indication that Gohan see's piccolo much if at all, because Gohan doesn't train and only focuses on studying. Piccolo and Gohan dont interact much in Buu Saga. The only argument for Goku being a bad dad is "Goku isnt around much", when Goku's either dead or training, usually with Gohan mind you. If Goku being gone alot qualifies him to be a bad dad then most fathers in the world are trash because they have a job that keeps them gone from morning to night. A father teaches their son how to be strong and stand on their own feet while trying to make their child a good person, and Goku succeeded massively with what he taught Gohan.

Well, gotta remember Gohan was trained by Piccolo from the start. And he's a saiyan. Those alone give him great advantages over anyone. In the superhero movie we see him use a new form. Before you get on me about it being Canon or not, they've said it's a parallel story meaning it COULD happen. The only reason Gohan didn't become the new protagonist after the cell games is that Goku was just too iconic. The new movie is just what was intended originally. Gohan having a spotlight
