In this video we gel test the 9mm Hornady Critical Defense against the Hornady Critical Duty AND the Spear Gold Dot.. We use the 9mm M&P full size and the 9 mm M&P shield.
All testing is done on a closed private range. All firearms safety rules are followed. These firearms are in original factory condition. They are not modified.

Good test! I'll have to admit, I'm not a fan of the 147 gr 9mm at all, and generally carry a 115 gr bullet when forced to carry 9mm. But, that's because most of my 9mm pistols are pretty short barreled. I've had way too many failures with the 147, even with the famous Black Talon ammo. (A range of 2' definitely helps them!) The 115 gr (especially if I load them as I do with most bullets when I can get the components) has a lot more velocity than the 147's which I feel gives them a much better chance of actually working properly. I also tend to prefer the Gold Dot when available, although the 165gr, 10mm has been unobtainium ever since I got into the caliber a couple of years ago. That said, my carry ammo is the Underwood loading of the Lehigh Xtreme Defender ammo, which I carry in *all* of my EDC pistols. I do believe it is simply the best bullet for SD/HD money can buy! Cheers, jc

When I carry 9mm, it is in a CZ SP-01, and I run 135 gr +P Critical Duty. With as popular as 9mm is, all the name brand defensive rounds do pretty well under ideal conditions; just a few layers of clothing in front of the gel. But when you start running into other barriers, you start running into problems. The majority of your Gold Dots and HSTs are going to fill with material and not expand at all shooting through drywall or wood barriers. Auto glass and sheet metal can deform the tips and lead to lackluster expansion. I don't carry a handgun for the best case scenario. A gunfight isn't a best case scenario. I don't know why I would assume I am going to get a perfect unobstructed view of the threat. The Critical Duty is more barrier blind and is the most consistent defense/duty round on the market. Maybe not the best expansion. But the best combination of expansion and penetration regardless of intermediate barriers.
@harrypeterson9287
@harrypeterson9287 Год назад
Agreed. Don't forget the quality of design and components either. Sealed primers, high quality nickel plated cases, low flash powder, a cannelured bullet that's tightly crimped. Hornady's quality control is top notch as well. Critical Duty 9mm +P really is top dog for an all around loading you can count on.
@MTMILITIAMAN7.62
@MTMILITIAMAN7.62 Год назад
@@harrypeterson9287 Yeah, if you review FBI testing data, 20 to 25% of Gold Dots and HSTs fail to expand through the entire test series. Not so with the Critical Duty, by far the most consistent duty round available.

They all have their place and purpose. The Hornady is not a poor choice by any means. I am a huge fan of SGD’s but the hornady CritDef had always been a reliable feeder and opens up everytime with every gun. My biggest gripe about critical defense. Cannot find projectiles to reload them to practice like GD’s
@supersheep2005

Very good test. Good methodology. That chronograph sucks in anything but high noon sunlight. However, your bullet weights are far too wide of a selection to get a true apples-to-apples comparison. If that's the only ammo you could get, I get it and I thank you for the information. The 147 grain Gold Dot is a hammer! No doubt about that. But it's not in the same class when you compare it to the 115 grain Critical Defense. Velocity typically reflects penetration and mass typically reflects wound channel. I would bet a 124 grain Gold Dot would have less wound channel and deeper penetration than the 147.

Too much penetration? If the Critical Duty has too much penetration for you, then you need mace and a rape whistle. Over penetration is only an issue if you have the same understanding of gun safety as Alec Baldwin.

@MTMILITIAMAN7.62
@MTMILITIAMAN7.62 Год назад
@papaschuette If there are innocent bystanders behind my intended target, I don't shoot. Because shooting with innocent bystanders behind my intended target violates two of the Four Rules of firearm safety. The only reason you are worried about over penetration is because you're some Alec Baldwin dumb ass that thinks you can delegate away your obligation to firearm safety. If you are aware of your target and beyond, and never point a weapon at anything you are unwilling to destroy, as a safe, responsible firearm owner and defender, then the amount of penetration you get is, within reason, irrelevant. Instead, you choose to compromise gun safety, ironically in the name of safety, by choosing a round with less penetration. We live in a country where 1 in 3 people is obese and nearly half are overweight. A natural fighting stance puts hands and forearms in front of the thoracic cavity, and over 150 million Americans live in a part of the country where it is appropriate to wear extra layers for 5 months or more a year. And that is not considering the possibility of intermediate barriers. And then there are dipshits lining up to carry less penetration because a compromised, underwhelming group of limp-wristed, queer bait glow bois give some arbitrary number for penetration in gel. Fine. It's your funeral. Me, I'll take 20 inches of penetration with ~150% expanded diameter any day of the week. When I carry 9mm, it's 135 gr +P Critical Duty, but mostly, I carry 10mm Auto with Underwood 200 gr XTPs, because I've killed shit with it and I know it works.
@airdreams1
@airdreams1 8 месяцев назад
The only thing you proved their is something I've known for a long time time. Each and every single round will be slightly different from each other. And every single gun will change the ballistics of the bullet as well. There's so many different reasons why each gun could change the ballistics. This could have to do with their rifling being slightly different twist rates, slightly larger or smaller, or even just the way they're actually cut from different tooling. Then you get into Barrel length. That 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 inch from different companies could potentially make a lot of difference. A slightly tighter for loser chamber could make a difference. Hell even the crown of the barrel could make a difference in performance.

First of all you're way too close to the chronograph you're picking up powder being expelled. Get a little bit further away from the chronograph. And you really ought to be trying the 125 grain speargold dot, especially in the plus b plus Lehigh defense. That particular round is been the most effective I have ever seen in most tests. Especially considering in a four and a half to 5-in Barrel it runs out in excess of 1300 ft per second. The speed it should be at. I have been impressed only with the fact that they've been able to make the 9mm a competent cartridge. But it is not a superior one. The FBI materials, laud it all day long. The problem is is it also admits that it is not the best cartridge for self-defense. But it is the cheapest that is still competent. That's the only consideration that won the day was that it was a cheaper cartridge and it allowed people to learn to shoot without actually having to take the time to learn to shoot a better cartridge which may have a bit more recoil. That however begs the question, is not learning to shoot a better cartridge worth your life?
