Croydon is located 1197 kilometres northwest of Brisbane.
The croydon gold fields are located 20 kilometres from the town centre. Croydon is part of the Etheridge goldfield region and includes areas such as Georgetown and Agate Creek.
Croydon was a large pastoral holding by Alexander Brown and Margaret Chalmers that covered an area of approximately 5 000 square kilometres.
When first settled in the 1880s gold was discovered in 1885 and by 1887 the town's population had swelled to seven thousand.
Gold was the main economic production of the area for four decades. During its heyday Croydon was the fourth largest town in the colony of Queensland.
Croydon's historic precinct comprises of a number of buildings from the gold rush era.
