Pine creek is a small town in the Katherine region of the Northern Territory, 226 kilometers south east of Darwin.
Gold was first discovered there by accident in 1870 when teams of men working on building the overland telegraph line stumbled across gold while digging hulls for posts.
This sparked a variety of gold rushes although they developed at a much slower pace compared to other rushes in more accessible parts of the country. Nevertheless good alluvial gold was located at nearby yam creek.
The first major reef was discovered in 1872 and named the Priscilla. Since that time many small workings were developed.
At one time as many as 2 000 Chinese diggers were working the claims, mainly under tribute to European owners.
By the 1890s the town had a population of over 3 000 people with 15 mines operating around pine creek. There were 27 stamp batteries in operation at a time crushing all for the mines.
By the early 1900s the pine creek gold mining industry was in decline.
Even so by 1915 somewhere around 75 000 ounces of gold had been recovered from the area.
Today pine creek is home to around 300 residents and honours its golden past by holding the annual northern territory gold panning championships.
Among other tourist destinations the local miners park is well worth a visit with relics of its mining past on display and detailed signage explaining the history of mining in the area.

Some very big nuggets came from the Pine Creek area. 25lb nuggets being recorded, and even bigger specimens. There is still good gold to be had from the area, and dry blowing tailings are everywhere. As with most hard worked areas, there is a lot of trash! The history of the area is amazing. Most mines used labour hire, and to make it payable, every worker had to produce at least 1 oz each day, or it was not profitable. Many cases of fraud happend, when claims were pegged, and sold to wealthy miners in Victoria, who wired money to the prospector in order to set up. When the stamp batteries, and labour arrived, the prospector and the money etc was long gone, and the claim pegged could be a worthless piece of land.
