Gold, Lies, and Videotape is a Discovery+ show about the Doc Noss Victorio Peak Treasure Cache Saga. Located in Hembrillo Basin in Southern New Mexico on what is now leased as White Sands Missile Range, Victorio (formerly Soledad) Peak is the site of perhaps the largest treasure ever found on land in the continental United States. The cache supposedly held not just literal tons of gold bars, but also artifacts and relics spanning an incredible length of time. Some say it was Padre LaRue's treasure that was added to by the Apaches, some say it was the deposed Emperor Maximillian's treasure, other put it as a Knights of the Golden Circle stash, and some say it could be much older than all of that. The book series The Gold House is a must-read for anyone interested in this fascinating tale, and it is chock full of material facts and twists and turns including likely murders and possible corruption by government officials.
In this video, I give an updated take on the show now that I have seen all the episodes. TLDR: there is MUCH more to the story of ancient history and hidden treasures in Southern New Mexico, including elements with direct ties to Doc Noss.
Somehow, the show left all of that out, even though it is represented fairly well in the Gold House books, and even though much of the modern footage in the show was taken in the Caballo Mountains - a range one over from the San Andres which is the site of a large number of legends, including a stash of gold bars located by Willie Doughit, AKA Laurence Foreman who was an acquaintance of Doc. I dip a bit into that deep well of lore, and pan around in GE so you can see some of the places in the larger local area with ties to these legends.
