Dry lake beds are a great place to find new, never before discovered meteorites. In this episode, the terrain of the bed provides spectacular visuals and high-speed action as Geoff and Steve cover as much ground as possible, looking for dark rocks against the light coloured sand.
-
For thousands of years, meteorites have slammed into the Earth's surface carrying an invaluable record of the origins of our solar system. But finding meteorites on Earth, some buried over centuries by thick layers of dirt and sediment, is no easy task.
Meteorite hunters Steve Arnold and Geoff Notkin travel to some of the most remote locations around the world to explore the scientific and financial value of meteorites. Featuring treks in Chile, Sweden, Australia, the US, Mexico, and more, these meteorite men meet with top scientists, geologists, astronomers, and meteorite experts to reveal a deeper understanding of how meteorites have helped to build our solar system and shape our planet.

Hi Meteorite Men! One overlooked way small rocks can quickly move is birds, such as ravens, pick them up and drop them elsewhere. On this ranch we always find fresh golf balls, but nobody around here plays golf. We have a lot of ravens though. Another point is, at another site, in an area historically used for shooting practice over many decades, we find lots of broken glass right where we looked the day before, and where we've looked regularly for ten years. Reasons: The sun glints off the glass only at certain angles, and you have to catch that right angle or you will miss it. Also, there are a lot of ground squirrels in that area, always digging. And a rain will always reveal new pieces you didn't see the day before because it cleans the dust off so they shine better. Finally I will add, it is well-known in gold prospecting, you have a better chance of finding gold where other people have found a lot of gold. No matter how many times people work such an area, there is always more gold that they missed.

So, we know the rocks we are looking for here has metal in them…the one Sonny found didnt. The meteorites without metal have a different look, their color is effected by the iron.

I've said that to myself repeatedly he found a $700 per gram 699 G carbonaceous chondrite but tells Steve Arnold that it's the right color but it's nothing and throws it over its shoulder when there are plenty of carbonaceous chondrite I have several carbonaceous chondrites and they barely stick to a magnet I don't know I'm with you though on all that
@willyeverdie2731
@willyeverdie2731 Год назад
He did whip out a 10x loop and gave a closer look but I have a hard time just tossing away a stone that I cannot readily identify. Especially at $700 a gram. However the odds of finding a carbonaceous meteorite are greater than just finding a stony iron hence the spike in price per gram.

Its true, when you farm you notice rocks seem to grow, they get pushed up which i believe is due to frost. Also tillage of fields tend to drag rocks to the surface, anyone who farms where there are rocks will tell you that notill is the best thing as it doesn't drag the rocks up.

large pieces maybe under the lakebed surface still? Many pound objects falling at several hundred MPH should have penetrated surface by some feet. Sounds like a job for your towed metal detector. depends on whether it fell before or after the lake drained, if there was still water there during the impact then it wouldnt have penetrated the earths surface

I think I saw what was a meteorite inbound here in Central Texas over a period of several nights all in the same general direction/location. It's possible that it was a satellite breakup but I don't think so as they came in at an angle steeper than 45o and lasted over several nights. They could have descended during the day but just not as noticeable due to the daylight.

Okay, somebody educate me. You find a meteorite with fossils in it? The explanation is that it hit a shallow sea so that is why they have fossils in it. Are they claiming the meteorite became molten and impacted a shallow bed of matter and it fossilized the creatures? I thought meteorites stayed solid with some melting on the outside.
@heavymetalredneck7973
@heavymetalredneck7973 2 года назад
The rock they cut in half that had the fossils wasn't part of a meteor, it was material the meteor hit and distorted/deformed into something new, like a conglomerate of several different materials.

He found Breccia, an impactite, that formed when the silicates in the ground that took the impact of the meteorite melted and conglomerated thus resulting into the Breccia. Moldavite is formed under the same circumstances, and sometimes from lightning strikes. Moldavite is a pretty green transparent glassy mineral that was probably discovered first by the Egyptians due to the use of Moldavite in their jewelry.
