Jeff & Sarah recently explored the historic mining town of Jackson, Calif., and came away impressed to see the historic buildings, some of which date back to the 1850s, still in use today!
They stayed at the historic National Hotel and will show you their room and tell you about John Wayne’s time there in 1963.
The historic Main Street is also where where wine tycoon Ernest Gallo was born!

Jackson has the oldest Serbian Orthodox Church in North America built in the late 1800s. There were many Serbian miners in the old Gold mines surrounding Jackson. I heard there were Greek miners in the late 1800s buried in the cemetery in front of the church. Jackson has the oldest Serbian American community in North America. I think you need to come back to Jackson. I love visiting Jackson. It is full of history that I keep discovering when I walk around downtown with the awesome shops. Jackson's Main Street has a cool bookstore cafe, bakery owned by a Serb, shops, Celtic shops with all things made in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, etc. I loved this clip.

@@jbenziggy There is also a Serbian Children's Camp in Jackson built in 1961. Been going to the camp my whole life. It is called St. Sava Mission. It is adjacent to the local hospital which was built on land that the camp used to own and sold to them.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. It was like stepping back in time looking at the buildings and stores. Jackson still has that “1800’s”look to it. I like hearing about the history of these old towns and when you read the plaques that are on some of the buildings or other locations that describe what was there back then. Great job guy’s!! Totally enjoyed this! Look forward to the next one! Take care now! Frank from Philadelphia, PA.

Jeff and Sarah, thank you for the excellent tour of Jackson! It actually looks a lot better than I remember growing up. My wife and I will eventually be down in California again to visit family and I will try to schedule a few side trips to visit Jackson, Copperopolis, and many other places you've showcased on History Hunters. I am very curious about the Early Amador Dispatch editors being taken to Alcatraz. As always, thank you for the hard work! Your content has always been excellent but your production value continues to improve with every episode. :)

Drove up to Jackson just last week on a service call and was delighted to see Tressler's Business Machines honored as a old time founder in the local business community. I have never meet the founder Art Tressler but I did do some business with his son Art Tressler Jr. for many years up until he retired from the trade. Jackson made a tribute to his father and the business he created of days gone by right across the street from the location of the old shop. Some local artist made a wall painting (mural) of the old shop in back of the current Gas Station as you drive by on Highway 49. Not sure when Tressler's Business Machines actually started there in Jackson but it was way earlier than when we started 51 years ago in Stockton. Time fly's. Jackson is a really a must see historical town one of many in the famous Gold Country Mother Lode.

It's Higbee's!! Another great episode, loved the part about John Wayne, I remember hearing once that he went to the same high school as me, only many, many years earlier that is! This video makes me want to check out Jackson better, the most I've seen of it is the casino. Careful what you say about the hangman tree, certain people tried to erase Placerville's history regarding it's history of hangings recently. I'd hate to see that happen in Jackson too!

Me and my family stayed at the National Hotel in the early 80's for a big swim meat. My dad was big into history, and he picked the National. We had one of the rooms in the front that had access to the balcony overlooking main street. It was one of the few rooms that had a bathroom at the time. The tub was one of those classic Cast Iron Claw Tubs. My dad recalled a story after we had gone to sleep. He was sitting out on the balcony and watched a rowdy group of bar patrons leave a bar that was closing. They all started moving down the street to another bar called The Asher Club. They all chanted "Asher Club! Asher Club!" as they moved to the other open bar. LOL

Another great video! Jackson is actually one of my dream retirement towns. And glad you changed your intro. The last one was more like a ghost hunting type intro. Keep up the good work!

Another great episode! The outtakes at the end were priceless! I inserted the s-word at every beep 🤣 How many takes, on average, would you say it takes you to get through filming an episode? Are you ever able to do it all in one shot?

I trip over my words all the time and have to splice a lot of the time. I cannot figure out how stage actors memorize whole scripts. My brain doesn't work like that! LOL! Thanks for the great comment ... and for watching!

Thank you for the virtual tour of Jackson. The National Hotel appears to have a big edge over the so-called modern day hotels. Thanks again.

I have to visit Jackson now! Your informative video with all the historical buildings is great. Fire seemed to be the fate of many of these gold rush towns. thanks for another historical video
