In Two Years Before the Mast, the author tells of landing in San Fransisco when it had only 1 large wood hut full of cow hides and lots of stray dogs. The year was 1834. 15 years later, the gold rush had San Fransisco in the Hundred Thousand people range. Amazing

I haven't read that book yet, but it's going on the reading list right now! And yes Yerba Buena/SF was a legit backwater, run down place to be.

100,000 was California's total 1849 population and of that total San Francisco contributed 25, 000.

I live about 30 minutes drive from Sutter's Mill. It is a beautiful, magical place. Of course with a harrowing history.

I was raised in Calaveras county. I used to love exploring old mining sites. The area is so rich in history, with many old relics still there. It is indeed a magical place .

Another important thing that should’ve been mentioned was the state sponsored genocide that occurred in California during the gold rush where the California government funded death squads of settlers that went around killing natives. Entire villages of hundreds were massacred and virtually all of the natives of California were wiped out from disease, murdered or enslaved.

@@conradnelson5283 because the genocide that happened was directly linked to the flood of settlers coming in in the gold rush

Unfortunately the gold rush was a death sentence for tribes like my own, the Maidu of Northern California. A little known fact of the states history was the government enforced death march of my tribe and surrounding tribes to Sacramento. It was similar to the Trial of Tears.

The mad rush for riches in gold, gems or oil is human nature. In the 1890's there was a gold rush to Alaska. People have always been willing to risk it all for quick wealth.
@saturationstation1446
@saturationstation1446 23 дня назад
ah yes... "human nature" .. because we definitely categorize every as humans and not only well off eurocentrics and european loyalists.. lets crunch some numbers here because this is really simple stuff. if only 1% of the species is rich, that means its AGAINST human nature to believe you need to obtain that much wealth and power. its abnormal to be obsessed with that stuff. what is normal is just wanting to be able to survive and have a family. its psychotic to believe you can own large portions of the thing that created you and every other thing you need to keep your body alive. only psychopaths can believe they are not in an interdependent ecosystem. only they believe that killing large amounts of life on earth is ok.

Interesting time in California, it was mentioned of how's hard it was during that time frame, Just a couple added points to the story that within less than 15 years, we were in a Civil War, but that being not bad enought the West Coast was hit by a 500 to 1000 year.... storm and flood. It was estimated that over 1% of (California) population drowned in 1862. In today population that would be 390,000. Destruction of property would be around 4 billion in today dollars. It's was a horrible time to be a minner,

The claim that James Marshall discovered the first of California's gold belies the memoirs of his daughter Eliza who states her husband James Gregson actually discovered gold on the American River. Gregson was known far and wide as the "red headed blacksmith." When Marshall informed Gregson the gold he found belonged to Sutter because they were working for him at the time, Gregson quit and stated he walked up and down the river bank filling a few mason jars with nuggets "as large as his thumb" in short order. Other pioneers found gold prior to 1848 as they crossed the Sierras but kept quiet about it. The Spaniards also had a mine in the early 1800's but it was not a major producer. James Marshall's big ego and loud mouth spoiled it for many early pioneers.

whats even crazier than that is the fact that america has the most productive workforce in history, yet lives the worst quality of life of any major country and watches the least productive workforce in history(europe) somehow enjoy the highest quality of life that seems to never stop improving despite having no legitimate way of showing how they are earning all that stuff. and almost no one is willing to point that out. like deep down they understand that america is functionally a resource colony for europe, but their egos wont allow them to admit that they are tools of a monarchs wealth conquest, and instead are just individuals trying to obtain their own wealth lmao.
