Gold Rush - Long Version - Working Gold Mine - Western Montana, MT
There's Gold in Them Thar Hills! Montana is nicknamed the "Treasure State" and our state motto, Oro y Plata means "gold and silver" in Spanish.
Follow the gold mining process as we pre-sort through tons of rock and wash the remaining gravel to extract the heaviest material, GOLD!
This sequence was shot in August 2012 using a GoPro Hero2 camera and a Canon Vixia HFX-100. Edited with Adobe Premier Pro 5.0.

This right here was one of the first videos I watched when I starting looking into prospecting in Montana. Amazing set up.

Welcome back! This was my friends' claim and he let me film his operation years ago. The area has all been reclaimed and you wouldn't know it was a gold mining operation driving past. Thanks for checking in. Dave.

I love this video. I watch it over and over. It'd be so cool to build your own washplant and set it up on some ground. There's good ground left, you just have to explore and find it. The airlift a small dozer and excavator in. It'd be so fucking cool. It's a shame folks with money get to have the fun adventures. We poor folk just get to sit back and watch the fun. I like this video because it's obvious this guy built everything and fixes his own equipment.

James, thanks for your comment and your question. The gold at the end of the video was probably from 4-6 dumps in the hopper. I shot video for an hour that morning while the two mine owners worked the front-end loaders. They say that some days are better than others, depending on the trench they are working on. I do not know what the average daily take is. Thanks again for watching and commenting. Dave.

Todd, thanks for the kind words. I used two cameras and needed to be a little creative with the edits! Since I shot this video of my friend, the site has been totally reclaimed as per contract. You wouldn't know it was a gold mining operation close to Trout Creek if you did not see this video. Thanks again for commenting. Dave in Missoula.

Great operation, must've taken a lot of time and work to put together this video! This is the way small mining should look, and having worked around an old Cedar Rapids crushing operation years ago I enjoyed seeing the little homemade touches that really work. Great job!

That's quite a setup there. Wish I had that at my gold mine for a couple of weeks. Everyting has pretty much just been setting there since 1939. I bought a super hog 13' highbanker and worked the tailings for a week by recirculating the water. My friend and I hardly processes enough to tell we had even been there - lol. He moved so I sold the high banker last week. Metal detecting is much easier for a single person.
@davidegg22
@davidegg22 3 года назад
An operation like this certainly takes a lot of dedication. A lot of moving parts that need constant maintenance. Like your operation, this is not a one-man show. You are right, metal detecting is much easier. Besides, it allows you to move between sites a lot easier!

This dude is SMART. He has a small operation, old equipment without electronics (so he can fix it), and has the absolute smartest cleanup system available to mankind. He doesn't even have to cleanup his gold. The Hoffmans need to take lessons from this dude. The Hoffmans (Gold Rush TV show) spend a million dollars just to profit a few hundred thousand. See, the old miners got the good ground, so all these claims which already have roads built to them have been picked clean of all the good ground. The old miners left the ounce per hundred yard ground alone because they got the 5 ounce per hundred ground and mined the hell out of it. The only claims worth mining are small untouched pockets on benches and such which have no roads going to them. To get a good claim, you're going to have to build a road. The way to go is seek out a SMALL claim which would require a small operation running 50 yards/hour. Trust me, this dude doesn't have to worry about going in the hole. The way to go is find a little claim that's a few acres and TEST TEST TEST. You have to get water permits, land use permits, mining permits, etc.. The way to do it is spend a season testing. Don't be in a hurry. Don't take on investor dollars. If you don't have a retirement with a million dollars in it, leave the mining alone. It's going to take 200 thousand at least just to get everything you need. Then you need fuel money until you sell some gold. Taking on investor money is dumb as fuck unless it's family or friends who have the money to blow.

He's smart. He has old equipment with no electronics, which allows him to fix it himself. He has a small operation which yields several grams/yard. This dude probably gets at LEAST 10 ounces/hundred yards. He probably runs 100 yards on a good day and watches the money roll in. Small claims and small operations are the way to go. The dumbass Hoffmans mined a huge claim which had a million dollars worth of drilling. The first thing the owner is looking for is to get his million back he spent on drilling. So the dumbasses had to come up with a million off the bat to pay for the drilling. Second, Todd's dumbass has his crew of 10 or 12 he brings with him. He has to look for claims large enough to run 12 guys. Wrong way to do it. You sample the ground, and setup an operation in accordance with the ground. If you only need 2 people, there ya go. Todd tries to shove 12 guys into the mix. Dumbass, that's what Todd is. He's probably spent 10 million to make 500 grand. He's a lucky fuck that Discovery probably gave him money. They made a show, they didn't mine.
