We have a bicentennial tree in my city that was planted in 1776. That tree looks like it could easily be 100 plus years older. What an amazing hunt and property!
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives
Yep I believe so. We have several local trees that are survey points from George Washington's furay here but this one is much bigger and older than them and he surveyed here in 1748. I would love to know the age of this tree.
@twindiggersminnesotapamandpat
Todd, a very exciting video with a awesome back story. The tree was spectacular, standing proud and tall. Nice personal finds with the rings and the compactor. Not to mention the coins and buttons. The historical buildings including the church. The family cemetery on the property was a personal historical piece of history in itself. Incredible permission. Thank you.👏👍😀
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives
Thanks so much ladies. So much history in this one and it was hard to focus on what story stands out. I found out this tree is older than 500 years and the oldest of its kind in the state. I felt honored to feature it and the landowner in this episode. Thanks for tagging along.

First: THANK YOU SO MUCH !! I subbed your channel when I realized you were detecting all over nearby to where I used to live BUT you have no idea what THIS VIDEO means to me !!! When I saw this yesterday it was such a miracle to me to see it because I miss that place so so much You see my family and I lived on that property (the 'house' on the left side with the porch that faces the road) w the one car detached garage to the left of it (the old 'church' (turned into a glorified shed :P ) and gravesites are to the right) . We had full access to the entire property (except during the 2 week long hunting season) for several years in the late 90's and 00's and I will say that we pulled into the driveway for the very first time I was overcome by the absolute beauty of the place - it was truly heavenly !! Because we were there a bit early to meet with the owner we pulled back out of the driveway and waited by the roadside and I cried - I told my (then) husband I did not care what the inside of the house was like I really hoped we'd get to be renting there - truly - it was a love-at-first-sight- experience that will stay with me forever and that was even before we found out we'd have access to more than just the house and 'yard apparent' . I LOVED living there !!! Also during my time there was when I became aware of metal detecting and then also began finding out about (and, then, became very good at finding) surface dumps (because I didn't have $ for a detector) I cried when I had to leave the area and look forward to returning!! Oh, and, btw - in around 2002 or 2003 I personally contacted the state DNR and had them come out and do a survey THE TREE (I did so without the knowledge or permission of the property owner with the assurance from the DNR that IF The TREE turned out to be a record breaker it's location would ONLY be known to the DNR and not published for the general public because of it's private location.) Perhaps they forgot as I was real casual about it but I did tell the owner afterwards that I had done so (they also LOVE The TREE) and they were okay with my having done so due to the ability to not have the exact location published publicly. The men who did the survey said it was destined to be the record tree for the state due to the fact that the only tree as large as that one in the entire state of WV was in the process of dying.
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives
Wow that is quite a story. I’m not sure how to respond to this as your words tell it better than I could. Did they tell you how old the tree is? Where this farm is is one of the most beautiful valleys in the state. You will have to tell me your name so I can share this with the owner. Thanks for the feedback and I’m glad you found my channel. I do lots of videos like this of local historical places.
@citizendebs
@citizendebs Год назад
The men from the DNR said the TREE is 500+ years old - it is the LARGEST of it's species in the state - am not sure they said anything about the oldest tree in the county or state.. I am Debra Willett - hopefully he will remember me as the one who saved the property from a fire in the woods right behind the graveyard that was caused by one of his burn piles (and - not just the renter who always had a lot of 'junk' hanging around ( I had just discovered surface bottle digging and was getting started in my self-taught degree of identifying bottles/glass (and other mystery objects and bits and bobs that I managed to dig up and drag home) :P ;) )
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives

The Wye Oak which WAS the oldest tree in the USA located in Maryland. At its end, the tree measured 31 feet 8 inches in circumference, was 96 feet tall. The tree you have in this video looks to be about as big.
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives
I wish a professional could take a look at it. It is well off the beaten path and hidden and why it hasn’t been molested I think. Just a huge tree. Maryland is only 30 minutes up the road so the it might have similar habitat. No doubt in my mind this tree is 350-400 years old. Would love to know.
