I have one and thought it was a decent instrument for the price, I have a nicer mandocello, the big difference being the neck width and scale, generally narrower and shorter ( 24.5 "?) and the action is noticeably lower. But ff you want to get into mandocello ( same tuning as cello, same fingering as mandola ( what is reachable)) , this is not a bad place to start, it can be a bit growly. I have a few Goldtone instruments and they are generally good quality for the price.

You could try using a pick made of softer material in lieu of flat wounds. They make them made of all sorts of materials and should get rid of that bright picking sound.
With appropriate strings you could tune it any way you like, but it's going to be easier to tune it in 5th than 4ths (Chicago DGBE might get sloppy at this scale length.) It would work in mandolin tuning, GDAE, with the right strings. Cittern tuning; lots of alternatives.
It sounds overbuilt like too much bracing and the wood probably too young and wet. Without the electrics it's like the thing is wrapped in a wool blanket.
not a lot of mandocello learning resources out there, there is one classical instructional tome by Rafael Calce, the rest is mostly working off of mandola and tenor guitar chords and scales as they are commonly tuned the same, there are many extant mandolin orchestras that have at least a few mandocellos, and of course folks like Mike Marshall and Radm Zenkl, Nancy Blake , Mark O'Connor all have you tube performances out there.
I just bought one of these, love it! I’m not sure exactly what specs should be on floating bridge..Basically the height of the strings from the sound board ? It seems the action is pretty good though right now ..
@@Amatteus yes, I like it but haven't learned a lot yet. I actually thought it was an octave mandolin when I bought it. But I'm keeping it. Sounds amazing when plugged in to my Fender amp..
@@Amatteus correct,... the Goldtone that I bought sounds amazing but again, it's hard to translate from guitar. First song I learned was "Mandocello" by Cheap Trick. Not that hard and a really cool song... there's a tutorial video on RU-vid
