Despite what the history channel wants you to believe. The overwhelming majority of people back then *_didn't_* work in mills and mines. Sure, there were a lot, but if you think about it for more than a couple seconds. You'll realize that logically, there had to be FAR more people working at small businesses manufacturing products from 9 to 5 with the materials produced by mills and mines. Otherwise, there'd be no reason for them. That was also the time that college started becoming more available to the middle class (the middle class which those jobs produced).

@daddariostrings After looking and researching for months, the least expensive mandocello I found (that was an actual mandocello and not a converted tenor guit.) was the Weber Tamarack that weighed in @$1800. Check out Eastman; they are a company based in Frederick Maryland which has instruments built in China. They are low to middle priced for mandocello's. The quality control is good and the bang for the buck is substantial.

@SirSelby
@SirSelby 10 лет назад
There are a lot of instrument makers who could probably make something to your liking. I know of many cittern makers who will make an instrument that can hold a tuning of CGDAE, which has the CGDA of a mandocello, and the GDAE of an octave mandolin.. double bonus! That's what I'm after! Regardless, if you wanted a CGDA instrument, I'm sure those makers could help you out.

RibakTB makes some excellent points. Mandocello string construction and gauges and are significantly heavier than bouzouki strings and their lightly-built bodies usually cannot withstand the string tension. There is also the matter of the proper (increased) scale length and the fact that the tuner posts are likely not able to accept the large low C strings.
