The eBay shim is the way to go. As Max at Traxxion says, the a-d is stupid and makes for a horrible ride under braking. But don't ignore the fact that no Goldwing has ever left the factory with suspension that was/is up to job. The '01-17 needs a 5-piece fork brace, a Traxxion triple tree, mono-cartridge front sus upgrade, and a rear spring upgrade. The rear pre-load reservoir also needs to be serviced regularly to maintain the 0-25 range. I've done all to my 2004 and wouldn't swap it for anything.

Thank you for your comment. I’m hoping you can help me. My 07 GW front suspension is very stiff & makes a “clunk” when I hit a bump like entering a bridge. It has just less than 15,000 miles on it & the original owner let it sit for years so I’m clearing the cob webs. Does that “clunk” stiffness sound like the anti-dive issue to you? I’m considering a full Monty with Traxxion as well.

@michaelhoare5291 Месяц назад
@@r.williamcomm7693 Certainly does sound like the a-d. Having had little use and being stored for some time, I'd do a full strip down and clean of the forks. Remove the top of the a-d and see if the plunger is stuck.

@@michaelhoare5291 Thank you!! After reading your reply I bought the a-d shim & it should be here by the end of the week. Also ordered a fork brace & going to get a front tire so that I can do as much as possible when I’m taking things off the bike. I rebuilt mine. The o-rings needed for the job (EPDM) are very hard to find. The factory o-rings were mush as they used a ring that breaks down in brake fluid. Nitrile rings work well in the lower part that is only in fork oil. I have extra o-rings when you want to rebuild.

@@thedude102878 well congrats 👏 yes it is a beast. And takes some miles to get use too. However let me say you made a wise choice over the 1500. I just picked up a 1500 for my dad and compared to the 1800 I choose the 1800. The 1500 is a little lighter however a totally different bike. I know they may look similar but they are not. So as long as you can lean that beast in a slow speed turn like under 10mph you will be fine. You would not be happy with the carbed 1500. Congrats on getting an 1800 and like I said I love my bike. If I upgrade it will be a 2015-2017. I do not like the new body style of the 1800s. Too narrow in the front. I like the wind protection. Best of luck to ya and before you know it you will have that beast mastered. Be safe out there.

There are plenty of those bikes available now that the 2018+ are in demand. I just picked up my first Wing. An 08 with Comfort /Nav / Audio as Mo suggested. Mine is like new really. It had 26,800 miles on it when I got it a little over a week ago. It now has 27,500. Barely broken in for a Wing. The GL1800 is fantastic. You won’t be disappointed.

The cure for the problem is to flush/fill/bleed the brake system at least annually (or if you're a high-miler, twice a year). Honda is correct. When properly maintained, the system works well. It's there for a reason, but people always think they know better. And for the record, those are "forks", not "shocks", and motorcycles don't have steering wheels.
@mosmotorcyclejourney9067
@mosmotorcyclejourney9067 2 года назад
Thank you Shawn for you comment. This bike is a one owner and was serviced by a honda dealer since new every year. I have all the service records of when the system was flushed. And it was done 17 times since new. So either a mechanic does not know what he or she is doing or this system fails after some time. Like everything does. Sure I could replace it but makes no difference in the performance of the cycle. I don't drive it like a crotch rocket. So I don't need it. Also this is a very common problem as I can see with my comments and from what I seen on the goldwingdocs.com. shocks or forks, sounds like you knew what I was talking about. And yes I may have said steering wheel, But Really. Again I think all riders get the point. Again thank you for viewing and the comment. Please be safe out there.

@@mosmotorcyclejourney9067 - I learned a long time ago that just because you take a bike to a dealer, that does NOT guarantee that the tech working on it had a single clue what they're doing. In the case of the Gold Wing, you'll find that most dealers don't even *want* to work on Gold Wings (I've even heard of some refusing outright). So in many cases, unless you're dealing with a shop that *specializes* in Wings, you're most likely dealing with someone who only wants to do the minimum possible because the rate card on Wings is only beneficial for the mechanic if he knows what he's doing and is FAST. The issue with anti-dive problems is well known and understood by those who follow such things. The internal passages and seals are easily affected by corrosion, and the primary cause of corrosion in a hydraulic system is water contaminated brake fluid. Anti-dive systems were affected, as well as the secondary master cylinder. In virtually all cases, the primary culprit was insufficient maintenance or flush/fill procedure. The Honda FSM calls for a very specific sequence of fill and bleed. I'd bet you a dollar to a donut that whatever shops touched your bike didn't follow it. Complicated systems (in motorcycles and elsewhere in life) require knowledgeable people to maintain them. You may place your trust in dealerships and words written on paper, but I don't. I know too much about how the pay structures work in dealerships to *ever* trust a mechanic besides myself or my own father. There is absolutely ZERO incentive for a shop technician to give a damn about servicing your Gold Wing correctly - there's no money for them to make.

Okay Moe good video on how to take care of that, but from my understanding the anti dive is only triggered by your Pedal brake. I've deactivated it twice using the same system, that you reviewed here, and never noticed any difference in the actual ride , acknowledging yes if you have the Pedal brake and hit a bump , you will feel it more, then the only time you notice it is when you use the Pedal brake and hit a bump then it's really stiff, in fact I've heard people blowing out fork seals when they have their Pedal brake on and hit a pothole. I made sure when I'm going over any bump I do not activate that Pedal brake. I would call it a rear brake but as you know, the brakes are linked. Did you try just bleeding the brakes and see if that clears it out? And then if so possibly removing the shim and seeing how it rides again? Just a thought, Honda engineer's put that on there for a reason, so I've always went back to the way it's supposed to be. Just conversation I'm glad you solved your problem
@mosmotorcyclejourney9067
@mosmotorcyclejourney9067 3 года назад
Well John. I plan on replacing it this winter when I can't ride. I was in the middle of a trip and it locked right up. And I didn't want to blow the seals. It didn't matter what I did there was no travel in the front forks. Now I'm not going to keep riding with that stiff ass ride. It felt like a jack hammer. Now when I looked it up on line there was not much about it. So I investigated it and this is what I found. A nickel with a hole in it deactivates it. Or they sell a shim on ebay for 20 bucks you can slid in there. ( if they sell a shim on line it must be a common thing that happens) I did a crush washer. So again mine were locked right up and on the gold wing docs they explain how honda had a problem with these until 2010 Then apparently they changed the design some. If you noticed no difference then maybe yours wernt locked up. Not sure about what your experiencing, I just know what mine did. And by the comments alot of people's gold wings did and do. And what fixed it. Or deactivated it. And yes honda did put it there for a reason and thats what I will be replacing this winter when I cant ride. That being said its not something that is gonna make your bike unsafe to ride. (Again they sell a shim online for this reason) Unless they were locked up then it would be unsafe in my eyes. Since I did the crush washer I have travel in the forks. And have no problems with it deactivated. I don't notice anything bad coming to a stop. John I want to thank you for your comment and your concern. Very much appreciated.

@@mosmotorcyclejourney9067 yeah I deactivated on a 2008 GL 1800 and then again on a 2013 F6B because I read everything you're reading, I agree with you mine was not locked up is the reason I didn't feel anything, just probably have some old tires on there making that ride bumpy or too much air, I've now gone down to 33 in the front and the rear end my ride so much better, and from what I'm reading is so much safer is more tread is on the ground. Yeah and definitely sounds like yours were locked up so I'm glad it helped, yeah I think I just used the size of a nickel with a hole big enough to allow that piece to drop down inside of it same as the shim does for twenty bucks. Thanks great job on the videos keep them coming!
