A great honour and great fun to meet and play with one of our favourite legends of music and being able to perform a "Golden Brown" remake with legend Hugh Cornwell.
Just buried my best friend of 50 years who was a bigger Stranglers fan than me although I introduced them to him. Good-bye, Denny. I love you like a brother. The best friend a man ever had.🥲
The faces on the Mariachis and Hugh’s voice and delivery that hasn’t changed for 40 years make this tear inducing stuff for someone who was born in 1971!
The song is about Hugh Ex-Girlfriend... Hugh Cornwell got to work, writing 10 minutes of lyrics that would eventually be whittled down to five to fit the music. Cheers...
@@dj1rst From Wikipedia's Golden Brown entry: "'Golden Brown' works on two levels. It's about heroin and also about a girl... both provided me with pleasurable times." Source: The Stranglers Song by Song (2001), a book written by Hugh Cornwell.
something special for sure, whatever magical alchemy was present in The Stranglers... his solo work doesn't shine and sparkle quite like this stuff. i am in love with his singing character! first real *kaBLAM!* moment i had with them was Straighten Out, how he does that little Buddy Holly hattip ohmygawd my heart leaps every time! 🥰🥰🥰
This a magnificent. I have been a Stranglers fan since I was 7 years old. Hugh Cornwell still has an amazing voice. The mariachi accompaniment is inspired!
It helps that the guitarwork is professional, that they kept the "harmony" in the latter part of the song, and that it's the original singer. An alternate take, more than a simple cover, that's what makes it stand out.
I always loved this song. Growing up in the late seventies and early eighties, never stopped to realize what it was about. After going into the military and getting hurt, I soon realized what it was about. 16 years on opiates is a heavy price to pay, my friends. Opiates are clean government heroin. I am now one year free of the governments golden brown. The song is really true, especially the part about "she stays for a day". You wake up the next morning with kicking legs and a bad stomach, shaking, itching and sneezing. Shivering while you're sweating. Its like having the flu all the time. I urge anyone who is addicted to heroin or opiates to get off of them. Best decision I ever made. You can do it, I did it by weaning myself down and then going through two and a half weeks of withdrawals but it was worth it. They do terrible things to your body and you wont even care while you're on the shit. I feel for all my brothers still on this crap. God bless, brothers. Via con Dios, hermanos.
@@ralphmacchiato3761 Thank you! I really knew nothing about them, just that they made pain bearable. Within months they didn't work so good so Docs upped the rx. It's a vicious cycle. You're right about never starting. I hope people are more aware now with all the OD's and such. Don't become a statistic.
I have always loved this song. In the summer of 1983 I was singing it as my brother and I started going into a pub in the Forest of Dean - just as a beautiful golden brown-skinned girl was coming out. It was entirely coincidental, but she flashed me such a lovely smile that I will never forget that moment.
I'm not very familiar with the Stranglers...just that this is one of their songs. When he started to sing, I was like, "Wow this guy is great singer...wait that kind of sounds like the guy who sang the original." lol
The Great Pandemic of 2020 has taken another artist - thank you David Greenfield for such a haunting melody - and...like golden leaves of an Autumn tree...they keep dropping one by one...there's never a frown with Golden Brown.
Golden brown, texture like sun Lays me down, with my mind she runs Throughout the night No need to fight Never a frown with golden brown Every time just like the last On her ship tied to the mast To distant lands Takes both my hands Never a frown with golden brown Golden brown, finer temptress Through the ages she's heading west From far away Stays for a day Never a frown with golden brown Never a frown (never a frown), never a frown With golden brown (with golden brown), with golden brown Never a frown (never a frown), never a frown With golden brown (with golden brown), with golden brown Never a frown (never a frown), never a frown With golden brown (with golden brown), with golden brown Never a frown (never a frown), never a frown With golden brown (with golden brown), with golden brown
I really miss the harpsichord from the original, but Cornwall's voice seems deeper and richer in this version. A nice alternative. Interesting that the other musicians didn't contribute backing vocals.
The quality musicians never age or degrade in any way. Hugh's voice has not changed since I saw the Stranglers in Syd in 1980. Form is temporary...class lasts forever.
This still makes me smile. I don't know how or why Hugh Cornwell decided to record a version of his song with The Mariachi band, or why they would want to record such a very un-mariachi song, but I'm glad they did. It is very surreal seeing these guys in full mariachi outfits playing along with a retired pop star singing his 70s hit song about heroin (allegedly) use.
It sort of became a thing a while back. To be honest have not seen a bad version. Perhaps the most surprising Was the cover of Twisted Sisters' we are not gonna take it lol
One of the best songs ever made is right, this one is nice but feels impromptu probably because it is. If they fleshed it out more it could have been pretty epic
@@tonyschannel2281 The original version is by Dave Brubeck by the way but the Stranglers put lyrics to it so this is a rendition of a cover so to speak .
This song has been in my head all night, I kept waking up and it was there. I didn’t mind one bit. I love all versions. Thank you Hugh. X I’d like a mariachi band at my funeral - get a jolly send off.
Viva Mexico ! Saludos !
