Welcome to BC! This week, we spent one night on Panorama Ridge below Golden Ears Summit in Golden Ears Park. Here are some helpful trips for planning your hike:
1. Start early, this is a challenging steep trail as well as popular
2. Make a backcountry camping reservation at BC Parks if you plan to spend the night. Here is the link as of 2024 - note that just making a reservation does not guarantee a spot! bcparks.ca/golden-ears-park/#camping
3. There are 6 platforms (and a few other non-raised camping spots). We took time off work and hiked on a weekday just to ensure we would be able to set up on one of the platforms!
4. Be bear-aware, they're out there (we didn't see any though, just lots of fresh berries).
5. The park gate opens at 7 AM, and only about 5 cars were lined up on at that time on the weekday we did our hike. I imagine there are many more on a sunny weekend!
6. The hike is about 14 miles round trip, but gains nearly 6000' - most of that gain is in the last four miles of the climb up.
7. In August, there was plenty of flowing water at the campsite from melting snowpack, but be sure to check with other hikers coming down if that's the case when you do your hike!
8. DO climb up to Golden Ears Summit. It's mostly Class-2 scrambling and the 360 views at the top are very rewarding. I was able to see Mt. Baker and Glacier Peak in the US from the summit of Golden Ears!
