i lived in north beach for years... and my favorite memories are hearing the fog horns at night and the pitter patter of rain on the window. such a dramatic sound...
Lived in Eureka Valley in 1974. Heard the fog horns and watched the fog try and make it over Twin Peaks. The city was magic then. I'm glad I got to be there back then.
This is great!! I wish I could get this in a recording and put it in a forever loop. It would lull me to sleep just as it did when I was a child. The seagulls and the sound of the wind also a bonus. When I hear this sound, I feel the sea breeze on my face and I'm in heaven.
I'm originally from San Diego and I would hear this sound from our house by the bay. It's always been so soothing to me to hear the horns. I miss that now that I live in Ohio. Thanks for posting this.
When conditions were right, I could hear the foghorns from here in Emeryville across The Bay. Seems as though we don’t have nearly as much for anymore,
There was decades ago a "chime diaphragm" on the North Tower. It sounded two or three tones, simultaneously. It's long gone, as are the Alcatraz Horns, which I used to hear on Doyle Drive in the mid-1960's. It's possible that the two-horn at mid-span once did sound two tones, one after the other. Now they sound simultaneously and each horn is aimed in a different direction.
There was an "FT2" Diaphone horn at mid span which produced two notes every 30 seconds. It was removed from service in 1984 and replaced with an "Airchime" horn.
Organ Pipework The chime diaphragm you mentioned was located at Lime Point light house just slightly east of the north tower. Three horns, one large and 2 smaller augmenting the large one. Unfortualy replaced in 1960 by an electric horn single tone.
Leathan Lund Yes, midspan, a Diaphone fog horn replaced in 1984. I believe originally there were 2 midspan but one was removed (bayside) for what reason I'm not sure. Maybe both were a bit too loud for the Marina district residences.
When I was camping in the Presidio, the horns made a different sound starting at 12AM. Then there were a lot more than the daytime, which is understandable. But, everyone in my class couldn’t sleep. Because they were louder and creepier with less breaks.
@StarsOnESP: I was at the top of the road, just before it starts the descent down the other side. It's right near the top tunnel leading through the hill. Glad you like it. :-)
That 1987 video is over an hour and a half long. I like to hear it playing when I need to be relaxed yet concentrating on a creative task. These foghorn recordings bring back great memories.
after few years someone told me those weird noises are horns from golden gate actually. And yeah but it was so creepy when i didnt know what is that and where is it coming from
I’m surprised that those sounds of the Foghorn coming from The Golden Gate Bridge aren’t heard as far out as the Farallon Islands 27 miles away ???? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈????
Yes there is a two tone on GG bridge. however, the single tone on east brother is no longer in operation except for during demos. sucks. I used to fall asleep to it as a child.
I can hear this a lot when I am trying to sleep. I hate the fog horn sound. It is the most annoying sound. I am a very light sleeper. I have to sleep with ear plugs
