And look at what we have to show for it. Rolling blackouts, massive fires, and the roads around where I live still aren't very good. What's all the money in the economy going towards if it's not going towards the roads, the power grid, or fire prevention?
The roads are all torn up in the Bay Area as well. And years back some State Parks like Big Basin stated they were going to have to close due to lack of funds. Turns out they actually had plenty of money, some people just "diverted" the funds to "other things". Funny thing there, the money always getting "diverted" away somewhere...
@@davidbcalhoun Yeah I'm in the Bay Area. The streets where I live are... passable. Mostly. But I've been to other places in the Bay Area where they're really bad.
@William My Dad knew the guy behind the Mothman. He ran the chemical plant in Point Pleasant, and was illegally storing toxic waste on site. The kids would hang out in this abandoned lot beside the plant, and he needed to scare them off before someone found him out. So he cut holes in 2 reflectors to put over his eyes, and threw a shower curtain over his back and would scare the kids away. And so the Mothman was born.
Sounds like California politics as usual take this assigned money use it elsewhere; I guess thats politics in general ( not just California) It's odd because the California governor has boasted about the California budget surplus to the point being able to offer illegal immigrants free health care

All of the suspender cables were replaced in the 1970s. I saw it done. To accomplish this job, a movable scaffold was installed that hung from both main cables, with a bridging section between them. This scaffold was used to attach temporary suspender cables to take the load while the original suspender cables were being removed and replaced. Why wasn't the main cables painted at this time?
My dad, at the age of 18, walked across the Golden Gate Bridge on opening day. I love that bridge. Hope it stays up forever but with the lack of maintenance like we've seen, it doesn't look promising.
HeX rAnDoMnEsS the American public is armed enough to keep us all safe. We don’t need our troops in other countries. We have no right to tell other countries how to govern themselves
HeX rAnDoMnEsS Nope, they spend like $700 billion on the military per year, which is only 3% of the US GDP. I know you were supporting them but it’s not where most of our tax money goes.
Or the entire American infrastructure is crumbling especially in big cities, and certain projects which impact lives on a larger scale are a bigger priority. Or you know, they’re on vacation. That’s why the city is still there lol
Here in Australia our Sydney harbour bridge is constantly repainted and has an electrical charge run through it to prevent rust or is that 2 simple for California ,the painting starts from one side at the pylons it takes about three years then they start from the other pylon and repaint in a continuous process and have been doing the above for decades.
With these huge steel bridges, the typical procedure is to start prepping and painting at one end and after the crews reach the other end, they start the process anew. I wonder if they are using epoxy paint or UV resistant paint. This bridge's main problem is that it is in California where infrastructure is neglected.
One more thing. Since this is in CommieFornia, the paint they are using is probably crap, since all the good tried and true chemicals are now illegal. Most paint sold today is garbage.
Everything has a limited life span and almost every bridge out there will need to be replaced at some point, this bridge's towers are made up of lots and lots of steel angles and plates riveted to them, the inside cavities are sealed up with no access inside them and maybe only primer from 1930 on it, at some point moisture inside would start corrosion from the INSIDE out and by the time anything is visible outside it's too late, like a car body that rusts from the inside of the doors etc out.
The Golden Gate is only 81 years old and it should last another 80 years. However, I'm wondering what in hell have the directors of the bridge district been doing with all the $$$ they've been collecting from tolls and other fees. It's going to be very embarrassing if the bridge has not been maintained to an acceptable standard and it is allowed to deteriorate beyond repair.
kansasthunderman1 it would be impossible to build collums. That's the reason why it's a suspension bridge, the channel is extremely deep to where buding hundreds of collums would be unrealistic
The saddles that hold the cables onto the towers are going to be the first to fail. Because of the location, there is a good chance failure will occur before replacement.
Sand Blast first three coats of Anti corrosive three coats of primer three coats of paint don't use that money on other projects spend the money on the bridge I live in the capital city and after raising the gas tax twice the roads are like Wagon Trails there's so much money washing around the Democratic state but it's mostly in Democrat politicians pockets and don't forget their Pals
Approximately one billion seven hundred thousand dollars is collected in tolls every year. That is enough to work year round on any part of the bridge they please. Plus there is probably money coming in from Cal Trans. So where is all of this money going? Most likely in the pockets of the fat cats. Your Toll Fees At Work folks. This is a criminal rip off. Someone needs to go to prison.
Sirios Star check out the city officials salaries to find out where the money went. Everyone has a nice 6 figure salary (upward to 300k) for absolutely nothing.
Unfortunately here in SoCal is the same..they’ve held “meetings” to talk about the building of fasttrak lanes on multiple stretches of major interstates. Many opposed to converting the already existing carpool lanes into fasttrak because there are obvious cause for concern, but ultimately they were built anyways. Caltrans’ initial excuse was that they wanted to “experiment” and test its effects on traffic, and as time passed, fasttrak lanes were never removed as now it became obvious they were for nothing but profit. As for road projects, we’ve also had a section of a freeway that was supposed to be repaired and renovated by 2018 according to the construction sign, but its already August and no sign of work or any construction can be seen. That section of road now has weed and wild grass growing between the cracks and potholes. “Our tax money at work” is what the sign says..
It goes to the illegal aliens. Ur state is a cesspool of illegal aliens. Can’t wait for California to fall like Venezuela. Socialism has no place in this planet.
@Chris Wittekind well they have to be going somewhere its not that difficult to maintain a bridge like the golden gate and I'm in a town where a suspension bridge opened the year prior to the golden gate With tolls granted its only a 2 lane road with one pedestrian path over it as well but still that bridge connects two small towns Aberdeen OH and Maysville KY and its now open with no tolls also on your prior comment please refrain from insulting the other party of your discussion that will not get anything done
Ok... Seriously, seeing this 4yrs late, and nothing's been done??! This is THE Golden Gate Bridge, probably the 2nd most iconic landmark in the country, after the Statue of Liberty!!! 💔🤦😡
1.) Make drug use on the street a felony 2.) Stop paying prisons to "house" inmates 3.) Allow prisons to have work for profit programs 4.) Some inmates work assembly lines in prisons 5.) Some inmates work upkeeping the city. The prisons make a profit, the city pays nothing to house inmates, and the city pays a discount rate on city upkeep.
I went over the bridge 2 years ago and they sent me a bill to my address in washington state.. because I was on a long trip.. they charged a late fee so I just never paid it
@xXsknnylgndx x @Harlie C Just who are the 'private' owners? AFAICT, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District is wholly owned by governments.
Seriously it's ridiculous. We pay 5 dollars every time we need to cross the bridges in the bay. Most people have to cross 2 bridges to get into the city. It's insane that these things have a money issue.. also by 2022 the toll is going to be raised to 8 dollars.
@@coffeetarded I don’t go there anymore. Tired of crap Yes crap on sidewalks and needles. Pay- Because it’s CA They built it and said there will be a charge till paid off. What a joke
The bridge with a board of directors... they supposedly had money to paint it but somehow they spent it all on ‘other’ projects. Now that’s a job I’d love to have, 6 figure salaries and a nice pension with nobody to answer to if I don’t do my job. Lucky bastards.🤔
Sheer neglect. Halifax, Nova Scotia has two suspension bridges over the harbor. Not as grand as the Golden Gate, but pretty big. The bridges are in a constant state of maintenance, and the older one, built in the 50s, recently had a major refurbishment and upgrade. All paid for by fairly modest tolls. I think it was CAD$1.25 for a car the last time I was there.
Japan can finish this is less than a week. They repaired a large sinkhole in the middle of the city overnight. They repaired a lot of damaged roads after a major earthquake in a week. What are you doing USA?
There's nothing you can do for radiation. You can't rush it because of physics. We just have to wait for Fukushima's radiation levels to become normal over time.
They spent billions of dollars since 2001 to retrofit the bridge with seismic devices. It was a four part plan. Phase 1 was in 1997-2001 which strengthened and retrofitted stronger support towers, stronger foundations, and retrofitted isolator bearings on the truces in the north viaduct. New special cable dampers were also installed. Phase 2 happened between 2001-2008 where the south viaduct was retrofitted with the same devices as the north viaduct. Since the south side also has the Four-Point arch. New isolation bearings and bushings were installed on the arch. The concrete pylons was upgraded with a stronger foundation and steel tendons installed into the bed rock to limit seismic movement. Phase 3a was the last phase done in 2008-2014 which strengthened the north side anchorage with stronger foundations and isolation devices. The next phase 3a is scheduled for 2024-2029 and is the biggest and most costly phase at 880 million dollars. The government had issued a 400 million dollar grant which is half of what the project needs. The other 400 million is coming from tax payers, state funds and tolls. This next phase includes installing new truces on the bridge span with more seismic dissipation devices, such as isolator bearings and bushings. New tongue plates are being retrofitted across the span to allow for limited movement in large earthquakes. The towers are also included in this next phase. The tower bases are being strengthened and new steel plats installed. New steel supports are being installed into the tower structures. After the tower work is complete, they are both getting painted. Why paint the bridge and waste 100 million dollars if you have to tear it apart after a couple years to perform upgrades? It looks bad now, but there is a strategy with the bridge needs and repair costs. As of now, the bridge is rated for a 8.3 earthquake whereas before the bridge was in danger of collapsing in a 6-7 scale earthquake. Phase 4 has not been announced as surveys have yet not been completed. However, I believe phase 4 will be upgrading and retrofitting the cables and roadway deck. After phase 4, the bridge will be rated for a 9-10 scale earthquake.
It's 2020 and they are still stalling and delaying ... on the suicide barrier. People are literally dying because of their corruption. Denis Mulligan is the man in charge of the Bridge. He's slick in this interview, carefully evading any responsibility. He's obvious an incompetent manager because he can't get anything done.
Only a matter of time. Infrastructure all around the country from iconic bridges to buildings in desperate need of repair. It always takes a tragedy to spark change

I visited the bridge in early May 2022 and what shocked me was the condition of not the bridge itself but all the chain links on marine drive. so rusted away imagine the bridge will be the same in parts.
When I was a kid 35 years ago I watched a documentary on that bridge and the painting process took a year and it was done every year Well it looks like they looted that funding
I live in MN. I can't believe this iconic bridge continued to be neglected 9 years after our I-35W bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River! It seemed like a lesson would've been learned after 8/01/07...
imagine just driving to see some family, then while you’re on this bridge the whole thing just falls and you experience a moment of free fall as you fly upward and slam your back against the top of your car and see all the pieces of the bridge and other cars falling into the water and then your car slams against the water and you see it all thrust upward around you as the windows crack, followed by it plunging into darkness as water fills up your car and you slowly lose consciousness and drown
As an Architect,… They should make a New Bridge, use the Old Bridge as a Temporary Bridge while making a new one, after finishing the New Bridge make another New Bridge on the Temporary Bridge So basically there are 2 sets of New Bridge one goes the Right Lane the other goes to Left Lane It’ll cost most likely between $10B-$20B, but it’s much better than maintaining the rust every 5 years and not knowing it may collapse due to old age
I walked across the Golden Gate Bridge and back in 2012 and whilst there was some signs of rust, it did not look too bad. I hope there was no unseen corrosion.
Before it was built, they asked the bridge's designer, Joseph Strauss, what he expected the lifespan of the bridge to be. He responded that "with proper maintenence, the bridge should be able to last forever" Sounds like someone forgot about that part
Well saying it was used other places probably isn’t technically a lie buying a new rolls Royce a Europe vacation and hot tub technically falls under the definition of other things it’s the wrong things they should be using it to fix the bridge among other things San Francisco is turning into a crap hole and people are leaving the city left and right they probably are not going to fix the golden gate until after it suffers the same fate of galloping gurdy and falls into the water
I decided to visit SF and also wanted to cross the bridge. Took about an hour due to the the horrendous amounts of traffic both on the bridge and the entire Bay area. I can’t imagine living there.
Wander the Nomad exactly. San Francisco is a third world city in a first world country. Just look at the tents lining our streets during the pandemic. Most government employees make 150-200k it boggles the mind.
Gonna be honest, I remember watching a video documentary that's probably close to 10 years old that mentioned the infrastructure of the bridge was not in the best shape. People who drove across the bridge, often daily, felt like the bridge was about to collapse. I think this just adds to it that the bridge for how old it is needs some tender love and care, more then it's currently getting. If the bridge wasn't the main mode of transportation to get across, I think the city of San Fran would be in a much worse state. Nothing like boating across~
It used to be they were constantly painting some part of that bridge at all times. I guess not any more. It didn't look that rough when I lived there 25 years ago.
Rusting/decaying infrastructure seems to be a problem right across the USA. In a recent trip (by train) across the USA (from San Francisco to Chicago), I was shocked by the poor condition of so many large bridges, both rail and road. You guys really need to do some serious infrastructure upgrades. Perhaps you could get the Chinese in to show you how to do it.
Kevin Cline I work, I pay taxes. That’s all you can ask of a citizen. It’s the governments job to use that tax revenue to maintain infrastructure. So wtf are you talking about?
@Kevin Cline what are you on? What, you think these are the days where citizens were considered slaves and had to make and fix everything with no pay? It's 2020, the government has to deal with this. It's their fault shit is failing because they don't care about us. People work and pay their taxes and they are using it for God knows what.
The way bridges get painted is once it’s finished being painted your supposed to start all over at the beginning blasting it with steel shot priming it and finishing it. So many mills of paint need to be applied. For all the paint that’s put on it all has to be removed once you start all over again. Bridges can’t withstand the weight of 100 coats of paint. The San Fran bridge in the fog and mist all the time. If it hasn’t been maintained you can bet it will come down some day.... just like anything else, ignore it and it will go away.
It’s not the whole country...mainly just blue states like California, New York, New Jersey... Michigan has a bigger suspension bridge (longest between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere) that is 67 years old and has been continuously being painted since the day it was built. It takes 7 years to paint the Mackinac Bridge and as soon as they are done, they start over. They are currently planning the replacement of the bridge’s deck, all the cross beams and the 5 main stringers that run the length of the bridge. Bridge decks normally need replacing after 40 years, but because of the excellent maintenance, it has lasted over 60 years. Even now, it’s still in excellent shape, but they want to replace it anyway so they can then work on other areas. When asked how much longer we can expect the Mighty Mac to last, many engineers say with the current maintenance standards, at least 2 or 3 more centuries. This is how middle America operates. Crews and managers would be fired en mass and directors would be asked to resign if anything even as remotely iconic as the Golden Gate were allowed to get like that! But then again, they do have a different level of tolerance for decay and blight in California.
@@scottwendt9575 I live here in Cali. Its a dump. I want to live in Texas. I've been through all the states you mention and yes all the democratic states have terrible roads. Its funny how that works.

We tried to find out whether the cable was ever painted. EvenFive below says it never was. We couldn't find a single article dated after 2016 that covered the issue. Maybe KPIX could do a follow up story?
