In my experience, growing up gay you feel safer around girls/women b/c they are less likely to make fun of you, etc. I think most gay guys just have an appreciation for non-judgmental people in general, and particular women b/c we tended to have more female friends than male friends growing up, as it felt more comfortable. This is a generalization of course, but it's why I feel I personally admire strong women.

It is DEFINITELY a generalization. I think it applies much more to "queens" than to the average gay man.

The show was relatable and tender to our hearts seeing four distinct lovable ladies be so kind to one another and bond over the years through their hardships, something in the 80s that many gay men sought out and wished for. It was like having aunts over for the night and to just forget about your own problems and be immersed into theirs for just a moment. Bless these wonderful ladies.

There's a lot of reasons gay men love the show. For me, it's the fact that a lot of gay men didn't have the support of our families when coming out, or that we had to stay in the closet. So, we formed a family of our own among our closest friends in order to have a support system in our lives. That's what the characters on this show were. They were a family formed among friends who supported each other unconditionally, but also told each other what they needed to her.

I can’t speak for ‘the gay community’ but personally speaking, growing up gay can be isolating from a far earlier age than people might think. It happens way before you even begin to think of anyone in a physical attraction kind of way. As a child I didn’t have many friends who were boys, and as peer groups were still quite gender exclusive in those days, I didn’t fit in with the girls either. So what do you do?? You find companionship with someone who also might be a bit lonely, is kind, and might have time on their hands. Grandma! I would just spend hours with Grandma - she taught me how to cook and sew, and she was so interesting and kind. I’ve spoken to many gay guys who had this same experience, so perhaps that points to why we tend to like old ladies?

@tylertyler82 on a similar, yet somewhat different note, Dorothy's brother, Sophia's son wasn't gay, but a cross-dresser & when he died, was buried in a woman's night gown. I know that there is a difference between cross-dressing and homosexuality, but it's another fine example of their strides.
@jamesroyce1845

As a gay man, the appeal of the show was the irreverence; tough characters (in their own right) and even the character of Rose was so certain of herself, the favourite has to be Estelle - just a tough old broad who didn't take crap from anyone and said it as it was. This must certainly add to the popularity of Betty who has ripened with age and the things she comes out with are so unexpected from a 'sweet old lady', who can help but laugh. I read what people say about the show 'addressing' the gay community, and that's certainly true, but it does so in a subtle, inclusive way, making any gay character as normal and every day as the ditzy, the man-wary, and the man-eater.
@Knappa22
@Knappa22 Год назад
I never thought that of Rose but you are so right. She may have been naive and living in her own world but she was very autonomous and certain of her own place in, and understanding of, that world. Rose could so easily have been a rather weak and mushy character but she wasn’t.

The characters on the Golden Girls were quite archetypal, almost to the point of parody, almost like drag. Gay men also enjoy being around people who've seen a lot and been through a lot, have tons of stories and attitude and don't give a flip what you think about them. A character like Blanche or Dorothy or Sophia is so world weary that nothing fazes them TOO badly. Even Rose was smarter and more knowing than she first let on. Basically, they know who they are and what they're about and it's a confidence that's enjoyable to be around and kind of live through.

Still one of the funniest TV shows ever created with amazing acting. Also, as a gay man, I completely understand why they showed this in bars back in the ‘80s… It was so ahead of its time and such a camp, fun, intelligent, witty show which helped the gay community through some of the toughest decades in recent history. Thank you GGs… You are still revered and loved nearly 40 years later.

Not true she was a big supporter of the lgbt and black community. She went to gay parades and even dressed up for the events. Being gay is not condemning anyone to hell. It's the sinful acts that will get us there. You are so pressed by a man or woman being attracted naturally to the same sex the only flaw like anyone is the physical element and that's sex. Keep reading your Bible and you will soon realize God isn't sending anything to hell that follows the spirit given to them, well minus evil spirits
