I find it interesting that in the 80s TV executives were brave enough to cast four senior-aged women and put them in a show that to this day still is one of the best comedies ever shown on American TV. What a contrast that is to today's television and movie industries....
She's always the most delighted in the cast. They're all so in character in award shows Bea is always cool and stoic Estelle is supportive big chill Rue is regal and calm And there's Betty being all smiles
Three of the five nominees were from the same show. All of the four lead actresses in that show won an Emmy for that show. The power of the Golden Girls is immense.
+Taka Ono The only one of the four stars of "The Golden Girls" who wasn't nominated. She could enjoy the moment without feeling any disappointment at not winning. That said, Betty White also looks very happy for Rue McClanahan when the camera focuses on her. The director, however, never cut to a shot of Bea Arthur.
+Austin Pearce I meant that Estelle wasn't nominated in the year from which this clip is taken, 1987. Since she knew she couldn't possibly win (while Bea and Betty could), her emotions during Rue's celebration would have a different context.
I agree. No other actress, I think, could've done with that role what she did with it. It was a brilliant showcase for the gifted actress, that finally made her a star (after years of working as an actress).
@@scottkrause477 Yeah, Betty also said Bea didn't like her, either. She never brought it up, but when questioned about how Bea didn't like her, she would just say she adored Bea and she didn't know why Bea didn't like her. I guess playing Dorothy who is annoyed by everyone came naturally to Bea!
Rue mcclanahan was one of the most beautiful women ever. Her delicate facial features are simply devine as is her soft voice. She sounded really different as Blanche.
I have seen pictures of her dating back to the 1950s, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single one where she wasn’t absolutely radiant so I have no idea what fucked up crack that agent was taking but it must’ve been hella strong!
She was stunning I hope I age like that, same goes for Betty White. The older women of today seem to lack the class these women had. It’s sad.. although Helen Mirren looks fantastic.
@@burkematthews9092 it was his schtick he stole it from Bobcat Goldthwait but it was a milder version. Ever since Andy Kaufman hit the scene comedians were really trying to be different
@@burkematthews9092 Yeah I was only about 6 years old when this came out but I remember seeing it with my parents and thinking how full of shit he was even then LOL!!! But I loved Bobcat (because he was funny)
When she finished off the part of the speech with the "You know who you are ... And you'll be in the book" WITH THE LOOK IN HER EYES AND THAT SMILE ON HER FACE, I literally LOST it... RUE WILL ALWAYS BE QUEEN!
This acceptance speech is evidence as to just how fine an actress Rue McClanahan was. There is no trace of the sashaying flamboyance of the sexy but slightly delusional Blanche who, although I loved all the Golden Girls, was my favorite character on the show. Rue played her to perfection.
The Golden Girls have gotten me through some pretty tough days and circumstances, they are my "friends", and "Thank you for being a friend". Rest in peace, Ms. Rue McClanahan 🙏💜
@@MrStGeorgeIllawarra Oh yeah though they're animated so it's kinda different. Those shows I should say are the only live action shows to have all cast members win.
The best acceptance speech I ever heard in a night like this. Class, elegance, wit and beauty. Blanche Devereaux was definitely a created character (so well done) when you think that Rue, once on the air that night, did no longer sound from the South, although she was from Oklahoma. Sometimes, feeling bad, I go back to this video, and others from The Golden Girls. Miss McLanahan, you’ll be long remembered, and you deserved being awarded ! Thank you so much.
Oh, I am so surprised she didn't have a southern accent like Blanche! I love her voice though, it's one of those voices that you could listen to for hours!
Very few actors had Rue's charisma; she made you hang on her every word whether it be doing a character on a show, giving speech or in an interview. They don't make them like her anymore.
Betty had just won the previous year. The look on her face in this when they were waiting to hear who said looked concerned. But not concerned for herself. I feel she was hoping one of her cast mates would win! ❤️
@@CudiZone34 She definitely did a great job portraying Blanche & that southern accent.. She sounded convincing to me.. I love all her outfits she wore on the show.. Great costume/ Stylist
This is so beautiful. Rue seriously was so emotionally touched for winning, She was so genuine and humble. This is why I loved watching award shows when I was younger. When we honestly get those whom are humble in winning.
Social Gamer yes ... I watch that & “KING OF QUEENS” on Lifetime channel 5 days a wk....marathon! Those two series I never get sick of! These four women & Jerry Stiller & Anne Meara( his wife)! Both hysterical series!
I actually looked up pics of Rue from the 1960's because of the "not being photogenic" story...I was thinking WTF?!! She was actually REALLY PRETTY!! >_
Apparently Howie Mandel (the presenter here) didn’t get the memo: When you’re presenting an award to a legend, you learn how to pronounce their names. *Its Rue McClanahan!* 😅 Lol, I’m sure he was plenty nervous & Rue was just so grateful to be nominated AND win her first Emmy Award she didn’t care! Haha. I can’t believe they’re all gone now. Forever on our screens & in our hearts. 🧡
Thank you Rue, for showing a little girl born in the 1980s what a real grandmother was like and for your gift of laughter! Always loved and never forgotten!
Perhaps this is why the Academy Awards has two presenters. This way, if one of them stumbled over a name in rehearsal, the other presenter can read them. Howie Mandel deals with some significant problems (OCD manifested primarily as mysophobia and ADHD). Although there is no mention of dyslexia in his history, he was clearly very nervous. And it didn't help when he messed up his joke about people approaching him as a doctor by not stopping at the natural punchline. He had to read the names immediately after knowing that his joke bombed before a large audience in the theater and millions watching at home.
Lol - way to go Howie for managing to mangle Rue's last name, not once but TWICE! Think he might have practiced it a couple of times before he went on live TV?? Anyway, what a well-deserved win for a great actress! :)
Even though they were all nominated in the same category, I love the fact that Bea and Betty had a happy reaction when Rue won. That makes me feel happy.
Very talented lady. She was a great orator I read somewhere and it shows here. Nice speech. I was a kid in the 80s and didn’t grow up in USA, so never had a chance to hear about the show and watch golden girls until now when Betty white died. I am binge watching the series right now! Can’t stop! What a classy, amazing show!
What i love about this is seeing the cast mates all so happy and supportive of each other. These women brought something to television that can never be reproduced and you can tell that this show meant just as much to them as it does for the people who continue to binge watching the golden girls.
“I’m not going to mention the people who gave me the kicks” Watching her look she gave after saying that told me she was thinking “You know who you are”, but she ended up saying it which cracked me up. 😆🤣
The history of entertainment is replete with people who told future stars that they would never make it. Lucille Ball and The Beatles spring to mind immediately.
@@Deborahtunes Really??!! She sure showed them differently.. I thought she was absolutely beautiful. Those gorgeous Eye's of hers..She actually has aged quite well.. Loved that show watched growing up
@@jcbulldog533 ~ I saw an interview where Barbara said she was told by a movie executive that "you're alright, but you're no raving beauty". And I thought what? Who would say that to "Jeannie"? She was a knockout. And yes, you're right, Barbara has aged very gracefully...🙂
