There was enough videos and information available to see that they were the same variety. You made a good choice. I saw they were going crazy on figbid with crazy prices. I went on wellspring garden and brought 2 for $7.99 each. Since then wellspring garden price has doubled.

I think there's a lot of this in fig circles. I would bet 1/3 of the advertised varieties are simply renamed versions of others.

My thanks and much appreciation for your enlightening videos on this subject. You have saved me time/aggravation and money. My little YLN bareroot was purchased this spring at a much reduced price from what Golden Riverside/Rainbow were going for. I wonder if it's the fanciness of the name which drives up the costs on these, Yellow Long Neck simply doesn't sound as mysterious nor as exotic. Just goes to show the power of marketing, eh?

My question-is bens golden riverside different than regular ole golden riverside? It seems that you say they are, at 8:20. So to summarize, neck on the chopping block here, yellow long neck, golden rainbow and Bens golden riverside are the same. And golden riverside is different (and somewhat more problematic in your opinion). Where does that leave Long Yellow? Sir i love your videos! Please keep sharing- Thank you!

Please remember that this is my personal opinion and I am not a fig tree Geneticist! Only Genetics could put this question (my honest opinion) to rest permanently. However, for what it's worth, I am 100 percent certain that Yellow Long Neck and Golden Rainbow (also known as Ben's Golden Riverside) are one and the same fig variety! By the way, I have the upmost respect for Ben of Seattle! I know Ben personally, and I found out over a year ago in a discussion with Ben that he does not (at least did not) have Yellow Long Neck at that time. If he had, he might have drawn the very same conclusions, perhaps not. I believe that he is a person of high moral character, and in no way should my personal opinion about this subject reflect badly on his good reputation as one of the finest, highly trust worthy, growers and sellers in the fig community! Thanks for watching! Kind regards, Lou Monti

Hi, Oliver. There are slight variations in stem length, thickness, and even fig shape and size, from fig to fig, among all individual fig trees of the same variety. I have studied Golden Rainbow for two years along side of Yellow Long Neck! I am, personally, 100 percent certain that they are the same fig variety. Thank you for your comment! Lou Monti

For Northern California, if I were fortunate enough to live there, I would first plant Black Madeira, Italian - 258, Violet De Bordeaux, Multa Black, true Celeste, Ronde De Bordeaux, Smith, Mission, Kadota, and (Panache Tiger), and your choice of an Adriatic. That should do for starts. Lol! Thanks for watching! Lou Monti

Here's some fun forensics stuff to do! Bring two leaves close together in such a way that you can take the closest picture your camera is capable of. Both of them should cover 50% of the screen! It'll provide you the average distance between the two veins or cell/pattern ! Let's see if you are right about the two being the same. ( even though I do believe you)
@loumonti10
@loumonti10 4 года назад
They are the same! I knew it for quite some time, but I didn't want to rush to a conclusion without being positive. I am very familiar with Yellow Long Neck, for about 18 years, and I was personal friends with the fig grower, George Emerick, that discovered this amazing cultivar in an abandoned, experimental, fig grove at U.C.DAVIS. You can view this variety in my video, Fig Varieties of the World, a tribute to my friend, Daniel Yakir, filmed in 2004. In that video, we call it Half Pound Breba. My friend, Daniel, from Israel, visited me three times and took back cuttings from my large collection at each time. His video was an update (progress report) on the varieties that he took back to Israel from my collection. I have tasted both fruit, raised them side by side, and I have compared them in every way I know how to. For what it's worth, in my sincerest opinion, they are, in deed, the same! Thanks for your thoughts!Lou Monti

I really enjoy bettering my fig knowledge. I think you do a wonderful job at it and with proof with all of your success! I see most of your 2+ year old trees have lignificated (not sure if that's the right word) all the way to the tip of the branches at this time of year. My fig trees of a few different varieties seem to have LOTS of green growth and not much "brown" wood. I'll have 3-4 feet of green growth before the tree even starts to lignify at the bottom. Any advice?
@loumonti10
@loumonti10 4 года назад
Perhaps you'd like to view my video...Why My Figs Trees are so Early, Productive, and Tasty? The idea is to properly nourish your trees so that they develop thick, fruit bearing capable, mature, branches! Earlier pinching sometimes helps, too. Unless your attempting to put on height, pinching above the last fig node that has a chance to ripen usually makes sense and in addition to redirecting all of that energy into figs that will ripen, it will also, eventually, help the tree prepare for fall. Also, withholding excessive fertilization is a good Idea right about now, too. Perhaps, cut the amount that you've been feeding them in half around mid August and in half again mid September. Nothing more after that. Good luck! Thanks for the visit! Lou Monti

Hey Lou! I was wondering how many days it takes for a yellow longneck to ripen from when we start seeing the tiny fruit, Ben states that his golden riverside ripens as early as Rond de Bordeaux but that seems a little too good to be true! So I was wondering if it took 60 days to ripen or more like 100 days before they are fully ripe. Thanks Lou! 🙏

great video. Why do you think all of Ben's Seattle fig fanatic friends voting YLN as the consensus best? Maybe it tastes better in pacific northwest? thanks Lou
@loumonti10
@loumonti10 4 года назад
That very well may be true, but Yellow Long Neck, when very well ripened, taste pretty good in the North East, too. Not many people own Yellow Long Neck, and more importantly, it is one of those varieties which taste much (MUCH) better when very (VERY) ripe. It should also be noted, as stated in my video, that this variety takes a long time to fully ripen once the fig begins to swell. The hang time is significantly longer than many other varieties, therefore a common mistake is to pick it before peak perfection. The difference between a ripe fig and a very fully ripened fig, in the case of Yellow Long Neck, is striking!Take care! LOU Monti

No, absolutely not! Long Yellow is an entirely different fig, most likely superior to Yellow Long Neck and Golden Rainbow, in the North East, anyway. I have that variety growing quite beautiful and it appears to be ready to begin ripening soon. I recieved it from the most reliable sourse I know (a close friend), in the early Spring when it was a small starter plant from a cutting. I've fed it well and it's grown quite a bit and already has some very nice figs on it. Although none have ripened yet, I can tell you that Long Yellow is surely not Yellow Long Neck or Golden Rainbow! Regards! Lou Monti
