In Latvia, you can also get a PR by buying an apartment for over 250.000 euros. But you can only buy it from another foreigner, so you don't compete with the locals.

Golden Visa is a big leap towards global village idea. In the globalization age you can not stop flow of people,capital and ideas. Golden visa cons are many. High rise housing prices, security concerns and of course capital transfers in form of money laundering. Golden visa scheme have made developing and less developed suffer much as their hard earn foreign currency got transfered ill legally for golden visa. Golden visa investment should more focus on job creation, heritage site development, public infrastructure development and environment savings like wild life sanctuary development . Banning golden visa is not a solution. The main aspect should be well scrutiny in a global taskforce but it’s hard since many international financial regulations have failed due to lack of mutual co operation of the countries together.

Interesting video as usual, thx, Mr. Uptin. Just the right mix of entertainment and braininess, I like it! 👍 The question of how good or bad golden visas are is not easily answered. Rich foreigners buying a pile of government bonds is no doubt good for the government. Them buying real estate is a mixed bag. I believe that rich folks tend to buy nice, pricey mansions which ordinary folks cannot afford anyway, so I cannot see how that raises rents in ordinary housing. But it's different when they buy an apartment block as an investment. In countries like Portugal, many older houses are run-down, so the new owner will luxury-renovate them and then raise the rent to recoup the cost. This is a side-effect of gentrification. But the housing crisis in MANY countries is a complex topic with many causes. As for money laundering, that happens big time in London and Istanbul and many other places. You can crack down on it, if you want, but then the Russian oligarchs just take their money and move to countries where they are still welcome, such as UAE 🇦🇪 or (inofficially) Switzerland 🇨🇭. Problem not really solved.

American are looking for golden visa in a cheaper country, not a developed country. Turkey has a better golden visa program.

New countries will develop Golden Visas to take in the market. Thats business kid

Interesting opportunity costs, if they want money and development the price is inflation, socio-economic disparity, loss of local identity. Tourism is a big industry, brings in foreign currency if not spend at only multinational resorts that can also benefit local economy. It differs if its a city that can absorb more changes or a rural area. Development planning, good or bad behaving tourists. Seasonal, low wages, opportunities :)

Why not just build housing as a sponge for all these foreign money pouring in? They get more construction activity this way. Why do they consider foreigners investing in real estate a bad thing rather than an opportunity?

Portugal’s reasoning to ban golden visa doesn’t sit right with me for 1 reason, the rich people who could afford a golden visa is not shopping around in the same real estate market as those ordinary Portuguese, those investors buys mansions in the millions of € . I think it’s just racism but they couldn’t say it out loud

Benefits outweigh the risks in general. But claiming that banning hurts tourism is not right. Tourists don't really visit a country to get golden visa. Usually, majority of the tourists are not even rich enough for that.

Golden Visas are a really good idea as long as the investment options are in stuff other than housing, which is just too easy. Also, they won't have a long-term "impact", but _effect._

Golden visas are all about enriching developers and construction companies as well as those with prime property in popular cities. This is not about investment. Investment actually results in net production at the point of investment - ie a new factory etc. This is just asset trading and asset inflation.

Unless countries can develop a high tech economy (which most can’t) most other methods of generating jobs and economic growth will have downsides. As long as countries put limits depending on how much their society can handle it should be fine.

To answer Upton question,would American want a golden visa to Indonesia? Why not,if you are rich enough and want to stay in a safer country with no gun violence. If you are middle income in USA,you will live like a king/queen here. Prices are generally cheap and the weather stay HOT 24/7 here 🤣. No storm or freezing winter,just hot weather all year round 🤣🤣

As an alternative to Golden visas, governments can invest more in providing quality education and implementing investment-friendly policies that will bring in foreign students and workers, and boost the investments in the country.

How about you want a golden visa you have to either sponsor 5000 asylum seekers (vetted of course) or homeless people. The golden visa applicant has to have a business plan to employ and house these people for 10 years helping them to succeed - before they themselves can become citizens.
