It's also so fun and revealing to do after just brewing a new deck. I'm currently using Moxfield for this and - while far from perfect - it lets me figure out quite quickly if a deck that I brewed would actually be fun and cohesive to play before buying any of the cards. I'm not a shill for Moxfield, btw., many sites seem to offer such functionality. I highly recommend brewing a list online before buying anything for that reason.

Please do this with more decks. Picking up tips for goldfishing is helpful but honestly I was just really entertained. I especially liked how you explained which times you thought interaction would come your way and acted it out.

Goldfishing is fun! But I like to use a d6 while doing it (because I play on a very competitive environment, casual tables might use a d10 or d12). Every time I do something I would roll the d6, and if I get a 5 or 6 I pretend someone interacted with something I was doing. If I'm casting a spell, it gets countered. If I'm activating a creature, it gets removed. During big attacks, I get boardwiped. It helps a lot to see the resilience of the deck, how well I can interact with other interactions or protect myself. And for my own interactions/removal, I use them as soon as I can. Counterspells I keep until I roll a 6.

May I ask, once you play in person have results been even better because you goldfished this way. I'm willing to try this method for sure.

That is brilliant!! I’ve just sort of done it as a “sometimes it fails”, but putting it on a die is a wonderful idea.
@Dragon_Fyre

Not very often that you get board wiped ‘when you attack’. I would probably just be rolling a dice for that every turn after I have 4+ creatures in play.

@mrpandabites

When Goldfishing, I use an 8 sided die to determine if my opponents interact with my permanents. On a 7 or 8, they do, and I use odds or evens to determine the type of interaction (for example 7 might mean single target removal and 8 a board wipe). I do this every turn (on my turn) from turn 4 onwards (my playgroup typically spends the first 3 turns setting up and its extremely rare for someone to interact before then.)
@Dragon_Fyre
@Dragon_Fyre 7 месяцев назад
I find unless you are going to goldfish 4 decks to see how they play against each other, actual game experience is required versus goldfishing to gain any real insight into further modifying the deck. I mostly goldfish my decks to try and determine whether my mana base requires more or less lands/ramp to be functional. Typically I have 36-38 lands.

So sillyness first, seeing Joey's excitement for his "baby lasagna" and literally anything he does with it is hilarious ro me 😆 On a more serious note, I love this style of content! It's something I haven't seen pop up before and it really does open my eyes to a TON of the things I didn't even consider were options for Baba Lysaga and caed evaluation in general! I've heard Joey talk about/mention this deck so much I was almost tired of it but this video alone makes me want to put together some version of a lysaga list and rry it out! TL:DR, great content, more please 😆

@EDRHECast I built a budget baba lysaga deck many months ago after seeing Joey talk about it in the "taking apart my favorite deck" video, and I noticed it struggled with finishers, and I struggled to pilot the deck well- I always felt behind, short on resources, and not really knowing what lines to play. I ended up putting the deck into storage for a little while until i felt like i could come back with some upgrades / tweaks. Seeing Joey goldfish this version and commentating his thought process helped a TON and I feel reinvigorated now to add some cards and freshen the deck. Thank you for this awesome video!

I love Baba Lysaga. I've given here bit more of a life gain/life loss focus than your version of the deck, but every now and then I check in on your list to see some cards I may not have thought of. The Starscream addition is brilliant (though I'm with you that it kinda messes with the flavor feel). I've played a couple games with her at this point and I'm tweaking the list to give myself a little bit more interaction and a few ways to accelerate life loss, but otherwise it's an incredibly fun deck.

I think the best benefit of goldfishing is seeing how consistent you make your land drops/ ramp or even meet your curve. More interactive actions are just harder to asses this way but it definitely helps in deciding what hands to keep and wich to mulligan.

The pressure to "get to the game" leads to many questionable keeps. It's a good practice to let your opponents know they have the grace period to mull. Sacrifice the five minutes of mulling to a good hand for an hour plus of fun.😊

I’ve been nursing this silly injury that makes it painfully challenging to shuffle for a while and I’m starting to enjoy "goldfishing" more and more. As you mentioned in previous videos, piloting decks that require a lot of shuffling becomes less appealing with time. Using platforms like archidekt or moxfiled allows me to make multiple changes to my brews without going through the whole process of acquiring said card(or proxy), sleeving/unsleeving, shuffling up and play testing.

This is really interesting to see but when I goldfish, I'm quite sure I don't do it right at all. I pull out 3 of my other decks, do quick shuffles & play a half-life game instead. It helps me see not only how my new deck plays but also how my old decks interacts with the new playstyle of the trial deck. I'm also terrible at imagining how games night go (I'm too new to MTG and too optimistic so I need the actual cards played). 😅 Loved the vid, Joey! Keep up the great work Challenging the Statistics. 😁

It's super interesting to see how other people goldfish their decks. I personally used to own the "Challenge decks" from the original Theros block. I ended up making a web-app version of the Minotaurs one (With plans to make the other two as well, eventually). I goldfish all of my decks against it and try to limit myself to ~10 turns as I aim for 6/7 power level.
@JessBritvec
@JessBritvec 7 месяцев назад
This is such a great video! Even though its sometimes mentioned, I don't think goldfishing is highlighted enough. Even if its very hypothetical as far as your opponent's interactions, I still think its beneficial to guess what is reasonably probable to happen and account for all the viable options you have at that point (like you are doing in the video). When I goldfish, I personally play until I 'win." I think the time it takes for you to close out a game after being in a commanding position or the most probable ways you can lose from that position is important information; I just make sure to take that with a grain of salt. I do focus on probability, because I feel that is the most realistic information I can get when dealing with hypotheticals. I'll sometimes ask myself what I can do against the most popular decks (what does a dragon deck typically do and how am I playing against that and pulling ahead?) or a deck within the same power level that could do what I'm doing better than me (is my deck fast enough to keep astride Edgar Markov?). Contrary to popular belief, I think life totals do matter, and I like to know how much damage I can take before I have to block or interact or when I'm in the position to accelerate enough to make up for it. I think asking yourself these kinds of questions while goldfishing helps build habits that lead to playing your deck better against real opponents. Maybe you don't need to do that if you're already an amazing player, but I find it helpful.
