I have the utmost respect for Dustin. To think that not only is he one of the very few Attitude Era wrestlers still active, but that he was able to be given a gimmick that he originally hated and turn it into one of the best and most popular in wrestling speaks to his ability as a performer.

He seems to share one attitude with Roddy. Roddy used to say, "I can't make a fan believe wrestling is real, however I can make them believe I am real." Dustin seems to believe that as well.

Yes. "The Million Dollar Man," Ted Dibiase's personal assistant was Virgil (it has to be a rib against Dusty: by using his government name). Then, Virgil goes to WCW to become "Vincent" (after Vince McMahon, not Vince Russo..BRO), then "Shane" (after Shane O' Mac, Vince's son). Dusty with Sapphire had feuds against: both Ted Dibiase and later on, "Macho King" Randy Savage (with the Sensational Queen Sherri). Sapphire turned against Dusty and went with Dibiase.

Yep and Dustin is old school. Dude was still relevant into the 2010s but goes all the way back to the late 80s. Plus being the fruit of the looms of Dusty probably helps keep that old school feeling.

Goldie had a few solid Wrestlemania moments, actually. He and Luna had a damn good mixed tag with Sable and Marc Mero at XIV. I really liked the four corners IC title match at XV. And his big return at Wrestlemania XVIII was pretty awesome, too, even though the match was just a silly little Hardcore Title thing.

That mixed tag is one of the most underrated WrestleMania matches of all time, especially from a storytelling/psychology standpoint. The whole story of Sable breaking away from Mero and Mero enlisting Goldust to humiliate her and Luna despising her for being everything she wasn't and then the way they worked the match with Mero and Goldust anchoring while teasing Sable getting her hands on Luna until she finally did and the place came UNGLUED.

God this was one of the most greatest interviews I’ve ever seen because it came from the heart- they just let him talk and get it out. I love the fact that Dustin Runnels is a decent human being. When you listen to him talk, he comes across as genuine and he still, despite everything, has a love for the business and an appreciation for the work he put in. So many guys come off as bitter and/or denigrate the business. Not Dustin. He seems to be able to completely separate business from real life (while understanding the importance of kayfabe). He's completely 180 degrees from the character he portrayed. A really great guy and an awesome Entertainer.

The other difference that he's hinted at is that they were very trained stunt workers doing it as side gig. Roddy Piper like he said also did stunt work. Other than his shoots being stuck in a 80's time loops. Taker and Hogan also worked in stunts and B movies a ton as well. Vince Senior and Jr/McMan and Patt paterson had a zero drama policy as well as a (now ) well publiced respect your fellow worker policy. So sure him and piper probably had a blast. lol you should hear what he said when they re-invented him "what's androgodonous" lol while he he was in victoria secrete getting fitted...lol--um you flew out from a stunt gig in georgia to SoCall to practice with Hogan and get in shape to cosplay...and are just now asking that? OO

I remember watching that event live on PPV, I would have been 11 years old. And this match is a match that I never forgot. It was very entertaining and you could just tell that it was different. We all believed that Roddy absolutely HATED Goldust and really really wanted to hurt him. I got goose bumps just hearing him tell this story. Awesome moment.

I met gold dust back in 96 in san Diego. I went backstage and he was AWESOME. Took time out of his day to sign autographs and take pictures for me and my brother. It was an Amazing experience for me. Since that day he has been one of my favorite wrestlers of all time. Real genuine guy thanks for the memories

Great video clip - I love hearing about the "behind-the-scenes" happenings from years ago, although I do miss old-school kayfabe today. Yes, Dustin "Goldust" Rhodes was a great star and wrestler, and one who definitely has been underrated. Yet I gotta think this match - and the in-ring action - might have helped sow a seed for the Attitude Era.

@@brianh4669 I agree. When I found out that he had gone back up there, and saw what he turned into, it just made me sick. But that's a pro wrestler. Or just about any athlete. Sell out your legacy to the higest bidder.

Would genuinely love his multi coloured leather jacket he used to wear when in wcw 1992.. Hell of a career. HOF worthy easily. What a talent.

I remember that match. I was at the arena when they were showing it. As they were arriving to the arena, I got out of my seat, ran up the steps, and looked through the window and that's where I saw them. That was greatest match I ever saw in my life. I hope the wwe does the match like that next year, wrestlemania 37.

Went back and watched the backlot brawl and he is absolutely right about hearing Roddy break his hand over his forehead. Really unsettling sound.

Dustin is a hall of famer in my book. A champion multiple times in WWE and WCW. He is great as the Natural or Goldust. A great worker and smooth in the ring.
