Great video! Always wondered what all the bells-n-whistles did on the GW. Love the gold wing...just to rich for my pockets. I envy all GW riders! Safe Ridin’.
Assuming this video is still accurate in 2024, you accidentally answered a question I've had: I know you can Manually shift a DCT using the 'paddle shifters', but wondered if you can Manually shift the DCT using a traditional toe-shifter? Obviously, since there is no Manual hand clutch there can be no traditional Manuel toe-shifter. I'll try to keep an open mind, but I must admit, not having traditional Manual shifting as an option is a BIG negative for me. On the open road there is no practical difference between auto and manual. In traffic driving an auto would be easier but I trust myself more than a machine. I suppose I'll have to look into what (if any) non-shift related advantaged the DCT has over the Manual T.
From what people have told me there is a manual toe shifter which can be installed down below like normal, though there still isn't a hand clutch. I've heard it works pretty well, but I've never looked into it myself as I'm completely happy with the bike just as it is.
I don't know if this would be for me as know i am in my 70's , to confusing , I think I will stick with INDIAN , JUST THE 3 MODES IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME
I love this video, but please answer a stupid question for me. I currently have 2021 manual non-touring model. That I will be adding the trunk to. But I digress, here's my question: I know how to toggle through all the screens, but I want to know how I zero out the trip odometers? I'm new to a bike with this much technology, and while I love the bike it's sometimes confusing. Thanks
On my 2018 you simply select the tripometer you want to zero, keep the cursor on it, and then hold the select button for a few seconds, and it zeros it out. Congrats on the 2021 Wing!
Personally I would like the GW to drop all those buttons on the centre panel as you cannot use them while riding and makes the bike over complicated. All those buttons are available from the buttons on the handlebars so it is redundant
Thanks for the button tour bro! I have the 2020 Africa Twin Adventure sport DCT so many of the controls are similar. I've been going through some anxiety about if I chose the right bike for me though, and now have mixed feelings telling me I might have been happier with a 2020 or newer Goldwing DCT. I prefer the bagger version though because my wife isn't that much into riding so I don't need a passenger seat. I think one day I may end up with one of these bikes, or who knows, maybe I can find someone who wants to trade for my Twin. I'd really like to see you demonstrate how the walk modes forward/reverse work on that bike. A feature I would love to have for parking or turning around in tight spaces.
The walk mode is super easy to use, I'll add a demo of it to my list of "to do" vids and get it online in a few weeks or so. I would have bought the bagger Goldwing myself but my girlfriend rides with me a lot, and she loved the back seat on the tour so I had to get it. 😎
@@MotoMengy If I get one I'll be getting the bagger for the opposite reason. My wife could not care less if she ever rides on the back. It's just not her thing, she is happy with this just being MY thing. If you do a video showing the walk modes, be sure to show how to maneuver it around tight spots like in and out of tricky parking spaces and in tight parking lots, or trying to do a U turn on a narrow road.
too many buttons to operate while riding on the road.. takes too much of your focus away from the road ahead. The screen should be touchscreen to make it easier to select addresses for navigation instead of having to scroll through city, state, street, house number, etc.. takes forever to get going.. Also, what's the deal with the gas tank? it takes four steps to open the filler.. open panel, press button, open second panel, twist open filler cap?? Honda needs to reduce the number of buttons, add a touchscreen, and simplify the gas fill up process and you'll easily double your customer base.. love the DCT though.... but bike is not ready for me to trade.. great video though.. thanks for sharing..
I pretty much agree with everything you said, although the lots of buttons isn't too big an issue while riding because I don't use half of them all that much. The gas tank door is a pet peeve of mine though. 😡
I picked up my 2021 Honda DCT with airbag last month. It’s an amazing ride. I’ve ridden Harley and Kawasaki. The Gold wing takes the cake. FYI another way to disengage the cruise control on a Honda Gold wing DCTS is ti slightly roll the throttle up in the opposite direction. It will automatically disengage the cruise control.
You added Heli Bars, but didnt put the covers on? FYI - Center console - bottom left and bottom right, are for Honda garage door openers. Bottom center is Fog light on-off. (Not shown on your bike).
Nice job on explaining things. Quick question for you. Left handlebar you have that nob sticking up for phone...... accessories. I just bought 2023 left over and it's the dct modle so left side doest have the typical 2 screw ring where clutch lever would be. If u can steer me in right direction I would appreciate it. I'm in NJ. And want to get bike ready for spring.
@@MotoMengy As a 2021 GW tour DCT owner I would encourage you to consider a headset/bluetooth unit. It will enhance your overall enjoyment of your bike in general and profoundly enhance your music enjoyment while riding. It is difficult for me to not use my bluetooth ALL the time. Good Riding, and thanks.
Man, a lot of people really like the adjustable windshield. If my shield is too tall or too short i get problems lol. Man that thing has s lot of buttons😐, does it get direct tv?🤔
Very good-however I have a 2016 champion trike. It has 4 sets of wings on it. Most of the time they are closed till temp. Gets into the 80’s. I notice the windshield on 2018 and newer is smaller and have only seen 2 sets of wings. I think the 2018 and up would have lots more air blowing on me all the time-or am I wrong? This would keep me from buying well like the 2019 trike CSC I almost traded for 4-28-2022
I'm not sure, it would depend on the shapes and sizes of the shields. You'd probably have to ride each of them to directly compare. I don't get much air on my at all when I put the shield all the way up, but then I have an F4 Customs shield too, not the stock one.
@@gbowman7344 Its made of some coated Lexan I think, very scratch resistant. It also comes in three sizes, one shorter, one the stock height, and one longer.
Listening to the bike start it makes me think about a comment I saw that said this bike is nothing but a boring, overgrown scooter, that sounds like a hairdryer. I don't know about them, but I've never heard a hairdryer sounds like that.
Mengy, I love your GW & videos. You explain things in great detail. I ride a Harley Vrod muscle & plan on trading for a 2021 GW. I was afraid of giving up power but, after seeing you give the GW the beans. I was impressed but a test ride will complete my decision.
Great clear explanations - I just bought A 2019 Tour DCT and needed this video! Now I need to sit on it and see how much I remember. I killed the battery playing with all the features and wondering if there is a small portable jumper that is compatible with the battery tender.
James, get a smart trickle charger and have it on till she is fully charged, then turn the ignition knob twice to ACC only. You can play with the electronics for a long time. When you are done, keep the charger plugged !!!!
@@alp3781 Very helpful advice. If I'm on a trip and the battery is dead in the am, is there a way to jump start the wing using the tender cable attached to the battery?
@@jamesrokos8007 I never had to do it, so I am not sure. Good point for me to research as well.. I don't think that cable can take the AMP load for a jump. Happy and safe riding.
@@jamesrokos8007 If you are referencing the Battery Tender plug that is factory installed; yes there is. But you should safeguard against using a car battery for jumping unless in dire circumstances; use it without the car running to lessen the amperage to your GW. FYI, the factory plug is rated at 15 amps and is equipped with a fuse. You would need an appropriate two-prong for your bike with the other end being the battery terminal clips. The buttons, knobs, switches, electronic ride and traction controls, radio, GPS, and Phone are to me a distraction from the experience of the ride. Too bad U cannot buy a stripped Goldwing with a 6,5 gallon tank and bigger paniers that will fit two helmets and a bike weight of 650 lbs. for $18K.
That's what the ST1300 used to be, a stripped down Goldwing more or less. Honestly all the buttons don't distract me while riding because I don't need most of them 90% of the time while I'm riding.
There is a lot of buttons there to mess around with. The shifting seems very similar to my spyders shifting with the paddle shifters. It's a very nice bike though, just big lol.
Man thanks! I always wondered why there were so many buttons on the Wing. Everything seems to have a reason and now you make me want a Gold Wing if nothing else for the electric windshield. Ride Safe
You should test ride one HDR just for the experience of it. Just be forewarned, the new Goldwing is extremely adept at creating smiles per mile! You might fall under the spell of the Wing like Moose, Maikeli, and myself have! 😁
Great video!! You saved me allot of time, my friend just picked up his brand new 2018 goldwing. I forwarded him the link so I don't have to explain the buttons over the phone for hours. 😅
I'm sure your 2015 has a lot more buttons than my 2018. I used to look at the old Goldwings and feel like I needed to be a Space Shuttle pilot just to understand it all! 😮
So much of the buttons are on my helmet. The one that has me jealous is the windshield button!!! I found myself giggling when you were going over the screen features. I have all that in my car and never use them there. 😜 Good video my friend.
Thanks Robin! I wish Harley had a bike with an electric windshield, it's legitimately one of the best features on my Wing. So much more convenient and comfortable than it sounds like it would be!
@@MotoMengy I can imagine! Yesterday riding is some strong winds I would have enjoyed mine being a little higher. Then there are days where a bit more wine would be enjoyable. Sigh.... Anyway, it was a good video. The wings so have just about everything. As someone once said, ‘no plastic inserts to cover a hole in the dash not being used’. 🙌🏻
Move the cursor on the far left side of the dash to the mileage numbers, then use the "set" button to toggle to the trip meter, and then just hold the "set" button in for like a second or two and it will reset the trip back to zero. 😎
On the BMW R1250GS once you set the heated grips level, you can hold down the button to turn the grips off and hold it down again and the grips will turn on to the previous setting. Does the Goldwing do the same, or do you have to keep pushing the button every time to reset the heat level?
I've been riding for 42 years... I can see those over-complicated controls getting someone killed. Honda, keep it simple stupid. This isn't a Lincoln Continental. A rider shouldn't have to be searching buttons to look for the correct function. That's one of the things I like about my 2013 Fjr, It doesn't have an infotainment system, but most everything else is there and accessible with two switches, and you don't need a navigation system to find your way through your bike's electronics. And don't even get me started on talking about a motorcycle having automatic transmission. Europeans think Americans are lazy, because we have automatic transmissions in our cars. You know, they're right about that. Motorcycles ? Really ? Drive an effing minivan.
I have to disagree with you on both the controls and the DCT. The new Wing has a LOT less controls than the previous generation Wing did (it's actually comparable to a Harley Road Glide), and I feel the automatic nature of the DCT actually makes riding safer than shifting. But this is why a variety of bikes on the market is a good thing, everyone has different desires and opinions on what is good and bad! 😎
great job .. totally agree on the automatic windshield .. I’ve had that feature for 10 years.. won’t get a bike without it .. HD needs to play a little catch up
I've been amazed how awesome having an electronic windshield has been. I couldn't buy a touring bike without one now, it's legit one of my favorite features of the bike.
@@MotoMengy first bike of mine that had it was a Honda ST1300, and when I traded that bike for a bigger touring bike, the only one that had the windshield was the Victory Vision (now a few more have it, including Indian)
@@sonics747 yes that's true .. besides the Gold Wing, Indians and most sport-touring bikes (Yamaha FJR, Triumph Trophy, BMW K bikes) have the auto windshields too
I missed a ton of your videos. Strange that I didn't get any notification. Excellent demonstration of the buttons and great video. A bit too many for me and I get confused at time.
They are all easily reachable by the thumbs while riding, I haven't had any problems yet. I do still prefer HD controls though, I like the larger buttons better, especially in the winter while wearing gloves.
