I have a club I adopted from a 2nd hand shop to use the shaft for something else, and you just showed me how simple taking the head off really is. Thanks!

I first watched this video a year ago and it's excellent. I like how you use the hot part of the flame tip, not the blue part (which is cooler). It's also nice be back here and see all these helpful comments from people who think you should have a license to do this work. You did this in your kitchen and they didn't get to steal the pull from you and sell it to someone else. I just ordered new iron shafts, I hope to have your kind of success. And I'll sell my own pulls!

Tried it on two shafts, worked like a charm. Charred the ferrule on both clubs, got new ones from local golf shop for free! Thanks.

@MrWindowsurfer Try using a small butane torch instead of propane. I use a pocket butane torch for woods. Propane for irons. You really don't have to get the head very hot to break the epoxy bond from the titanium. If the heat gets thru the epoxy and into the shaft then the resin in the shaft will break down and the tip will be ruined.

Do NOT twist a graphite shaft like what is shown in this video. You are very likely to break the fibers, get a soft tip and ruin the properties of the shaft.
@davidnettleton3375

Agreed! This is the absolute WRONG way to pull a graphite shaft that you might want to reuse. Must be pulled STRAIGHT OUT.

This is how not to remove a graphite shaft. You can only do that on steel shafts. But this way can ruin a graphite shaft for sure. Even though the shaft came off, doesn't mean that he didn't possibly ruin the tip a little. Most clubs don't need to be torched, just a heat gun usually works.
@Dtyler171
@Dtyler171 9 лет назад
Mark Creson Indeed. Works good this way if you don't want the shaft though.
@prorobo
@prorobo 8 лет назад
Heat guns do not pinpoint the heat like a torch and you're unnecessarily spreading heat onto the club head and shaft (especially if graphite). However you definitely don't want to twist a graphite shaft during removal hence the use of shaft pullers.

Ok. I'm a 16 year old who just broke my driver shaft and I was looking for a way to salvage the club head myself but all I found was two idiots fighting over whose better at shaft pulling and golfing. Really be mature and go you're separate was and stop fighting on RU-vid about fixing clubs and go play some golf.

Never twist a graphite shaft...or the 20 or 30 buck you "save" will cost you in replacing the splintered shaft. There is a very good reason they make shaft extractors.
@bruski3859
@bruski3859 4 года назад
Most peiple remove a shaft because they have a new one to put in. There may be the rare case where someone would remove the shaft then put it right back into the head. Well i change my mind i dont think that has ever fing happened. Thanks for your 2 cents though.

I tried (b4 seeing this vid) and when I twisted the shaft it came out but the fibers were wrecked and the tip had a soft spot in it that flexed and made the shaft NFG. I assume I got the head too hot/too fast and the shaft resin cooked. gonna build a simple puller out of a used bottle jack so that if my heat is imprecise, I won't wreck the shaft. I think this is too risky.

Guys, go to a proper clubmaker for this. Not even a box or specialty store. Someone who only makes and repairs clubs. There's so much more that goes into reshafting a club than just heating the head and removing the old shaft.
@bruski3859
@bruski3859 8 лет назад
like what please explain. if u were just removing this shaft what would you do differently? if you are replacing the shaft 99% of the time the shaft won't be reused
@Chris_the_golf_guy
@Chris_the_golf_guy 8 лет назад
+Aaron Bruce you need to make sure your swingweight doesnt change significantly and that the shaft is prepped properly and fits snugly. you should spine and oscillate the shaft as well. you should also make sure that the bore plug is still in tact if here is one, along with properly cleaning and prepping the hosel of the club. you're also very close to destroying the shaft you're removing by doing it this way. im not sure that 99% is an accurate amount of time that the shaft wont be used. when i reshaft for customers its more like 99% of the time they put it up on ebay to make a little money back. this is more like a decent way to get a destroyed shaft out yourself, not for use on good product.

I'm gonna practice by epoxying in a few crap graphite shafts into some heads, getting one o them lil butane torches and yankin them bruceky9 style. @bruceky9 Like you I pulled shafts without a puller Till I got a shaft that was stuck on a 4 iron. I have pulled many shafts a puller and reused them. If after you pull a shaft without a puller IF you can't press your finger on the shaft tip and keep it there the tip got too hot! GOOD LUCK

nice tip, but i don't have a blow torch. Could i do it on my gas cooker? I'm throwing the shaft away anyway, so not bothered about damaging it
@davidnettleton3375
@davidnettleton3375 3 года назад
It's a $10 torch head on a $4 bottle of propane. Available at any hardware store. Buy it once for less than the cost of paying to have the shaft pulled. Then you have it forever. For about the same amount you can also get a butane torch which burns a little cooler and is safer for the finish of your club head.

for all the people griping about him "twisting" -- he's really not, much. People can literally spin steel shafts in place. He's wiggling it, and probably has more real-life experience and success than anyone pretending to be experts who probably don't even own a heat gun, torch, garage, or they're so rich they can whip out a credit card and order a top of the line puller without ever having to tinker on a budget. Yes, I'm going to throw together a cheap wooden rig and wiggle mine less if I can because I'm paranoid and brainwashed, but I'll bet this guy has done this many times without issue. ***---> He's probably less hard on the graphite and binder material than people who cook the whole thing longer.

Oh baby, that is the way to destroy a shaft, the twisting forces are never good. Some epoxy will immediately give up its adhesive bond under heat, but others do not give up the bond as nicely, so you may get away with it on some, but it will definitely bite you down the line; if you do more than a handful.

No doubt as illustrated, this can work. Sometimes. But...... From a liability point of view I would not recommend posting video in a public place working without safety gloves and safety glasses.
