I remember when Tiger hit the scene. It was often said at the time that his body wouldn’t hold up given the amount of body rotation he was doing thousands of times a day.
A legend in his own mind . I love this guy . He used to play at my club when I was a kid . Did a demonstration one afternoon and showed us how strong his wrists were . The biggest guy in the club , Freddie Cartes couldn't even compete with him on wrist strength . I was very impressed and lucky to meet him in my life . 1985 Glendower .
Gary Player is the last of the old school and a Gentleman through and through. He has the correct outlook on life and on sport. If more kids had him as a role model the world would be a better place.
If Tiger had just left his swing alone from the 2000 era that Butch Harmon helped him to create he would have won over 100 tour events and possibly 25 majors. It was the greatest golf swing in history. That swing won 9 times in a year, 4 majors in a row including a US Open by 15 shots and set every record imaginable. I understand his mentality of always wanting to improve but I guarantee that if you asked him right now if it was a huge mistake to change that swing he would tell you it was.
Sorry, but no. During the time he was with Haney he won six more majors and was the best iron player ever to play the game during that time. With both his Haney swing, and his Harmon swing, he could hit the ball all over the golf course with his driver. He drove it pretty straight for the second half of 99' and most of 2000, but by mid 2001 he could hit the ball in another fairway at any time. He wanted to stop doing that. Nicklaus and Hogan never did that.
I don't really agree with Gary on Tiger. If you read the book "The Big Miss" by Hank Haney, the fact is Tiger bulked himself up to a point that was not really natural for his frame as well as getting injured in a Navy Seal camp (knee) that was the start of all of the serious injuries he had that ruined his career. He also had the psychological effects of his dad dying and his numerous affairs that led him astray on and off the course. As far a swing coaches, he never should have left Butch Harmon in my opinion (Haney was a worthy successor nonetheless) but no single coach derailed his career. Tiger was responsible for that. I think he could have done even more after the 2019 Masters win but that car crash where he fell asleep and shattered his leg and ankle really was the end for Tiger ever winning again unfortunately.
You said it yourself at the end, it was a car crash that ended it all. Right up to that he won a Masters for f sake. I bet 99.9% of pro golfers would love their career to be derailed like that lol to winning "only" one major every few years. This idea that he injured himself and overtrained or changed coaches like man he just got old and there was more competition and he still won Masters. There is no doubt if that car crash didnt happen he would have won one more major by now.
Love Gary Player and his philosophy on life. I don't see the need to label and define labels when it comes to Super Star golfers or anything else. Who cares about labels. But I agree and learn from almost everything Gary says. Great wisdom!!!!
How true. I said when I used to coach forget what they tell you. They don't know. I played pro after I stopped listening and simply stayed behind the ball and made a good swing.
In my opinion Tigers life started getting rough when his dad passed away! Tiger loved and respected his dad. He kept Tiger on course of greatness . I really don’t think half the crap that happened in these past years would have happened with his dad around!
Tiger’s 14th Major was NOT the US Open at Pebble Beach. That one was in 2000. His last one before the 2019: Masters was the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines.
Everybody's got their own theories I guess. Tiger physically beat up his body through is training regimen, and it is even reported (some people say 🙂) that he was trying to qualify as some sort of Special Forces military equivalent....who knows. BTW, my wife's grandma had at least 6 small meals a day, and didn't see a doctor (not even for the birth of her 8 kids) until she was 104 in a small town in Mexico. In fact her whole family has an incredible lifeline; almost all grandma's live to be near 100. Grandpas mostly died in their late 40s etc...falling from horses, hit by lightning, or even a gunfight. I hear these stories every Christmas.
Re TW. Nobody stays ontop forever. I do think he is the best golfer of all time. He's in a different league than the older legends. Because times have changed. You cannot compare them. Tiger Woods is still the best ive seen.
I followed Gary one time at a senior tour and he said I'm going to hit here its going to hit it below the trees hit bunker and bounce on the green. and then he DID IT.
He is a narciisist . of course , like most of the top athletes in the world , thats why they are World champions. They are totally obsessed with winning , their own personality s .. the media attention, and then the money.. Tiger made so much money and has had a lot of problems with Women.. thats been his downfall.. he lost the plot because of all the money and the women problems... Sounds a bit like Boris Becker ?
I agree with the coaching part…. Being a Canadian, and a hockey fan for life, there has been a weird trend in the NHL for last decade and a half, teams employ an absolute ordinary, mediocre former goalie, to coach the team’s goalies. Doesn’t make sense.
Golf coaches didn't ruin Tiger Woods' career. He was able to win majors whilst using what were, in effect, three different swings. Tiger Woods' career came unstuck as a result of his increasingly physical/fitness problems and the way he conducted himself in his personal life. All good things come to end regardless, and Tiger Woods had his day.
Haha weder noch. Das Video wurde aufgenommen im Rahmen der Veranstaltung BMW Golf Cup Weltfinale, bei dem Gary Player als Ehrengast vor Ort war und KW GOLF als Journalist.
Tigers 14th Major was the US Open in 2008 in a playoff, he won in 2000 by 15 shots at Pebble Beach...oh yeah and Michael Campbell is from New Zealand....and on and on and on. Lol
No coach can be held responsible. Tiger is Tiger . He was always clear on what he wanted to do , change , why and how . He used coaches for sounding boards only .
Richtig interesantes Gespraech.
Great listening to Gary's thoughts and I'm probably being a little pedantic but perhaps Gary should bring his criterium for being a superstar golfer down from 6 majors. Seve, 5 majors, not a superstar?
