Big thanks to VW UK for providing both a 2019 and 2020 model year Golf GTI TCR for this test. The 2020 comes with an Akrapovic exhaust system as standard but a pretty hefty price increase, big question, is it worth it? Listen to this exhaust test and decide for yourself!
Additional optional equipment on this vehicle (the grey 2020 TCR): • GTI TCR Performance Pack - 7.5J x 19” ‘Reifnitz’ alloys with 225/35 R19 tyres and anti-theft wheel bolts, derestricted top speed to 164 mph, lowered sports suspension by approx. 20mm and Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) - variable suspension settings, choice of Sport, Comfort and Normal (£2,100) • Carbon fibre door mirrors (£475) • side decals - honeycomb design (£555)

It's a very similar design to stock, it's just made of titanium instead of stainless steel (significantly lighter) and with a slightly less restrictive muffler. :) It's never going to sound dramatically different. You are paying for the quality of the Akrapovic's workmanship.

@@mukti7485 nonsense, Golf R sounds great with Akrapovic, this sounds good but not worth the money over the stock sound, the clubsport already sounds good, if I had a decent motor that sounded crap stock I'd buy one.

Jamie Thomson I’ve had mine a couple of months, I love it. Standard exhaust sounds great. Mine’s a daily drive, I’ll probably never use it on a track so don’t need a sports exhaust. Enjoy!

You don't have the choice now as from around July, when spec'ing/ordering a new TCR, then you get the Akrapovic as standard now and don't have the option to choose the standard exhaust. Of course it does mean VW put up the base price to include the new Akrapovic exhaust.

I picked up my TCR in September. Done just over 1000 miles and the pops and bangs on the Akrapovic exhaust now sound amazing. You can even get it to do a proper "whip-crack" when you're really on it, which sounds awesome when you're in a tunnel or under a flyover 😄👍🏻 The car in this video was clearly not run in enough in my opinion. Mine is sounding better and better. I'm so pleased 😌 as originally I was so disheartened when I first saw this video, before I collected mine.

Thanks for the feedback Darren. The press cars are always run-in to some degree, I seem to recall that one had 600 miles on the clock, 500 being the minimum before being released for press use. I''ve tried to be as scientific as possible with that test using the same roads on the same day and (definitely) the same mode (Sport). No tunnels or flyovers were used so it's possible the press car might sound the same as yours in that context. It's also possible the standard exhaust may sound just as good then too. I'm assuming you've haven't driven the standard exhaust car and if you have it won't be as extensively. Both cars have to meet the same drive-by noise regulations hence why there isn't a marked difference in my opinion but both cars sound surprisingly good so that's good for all owners. My big issue with the Akrapovic is that it's been forced onto buyers at £3000 making any performance pack car have a list price of over £40k meaning the car will cost an extra £1600 to tax over the first five years which is ridiculous especially when you can buy an aftermarket Akrapovic for £1800 and keep your old exhaust AND I suspect it's even better than the factory version as its noise is not so tightly regulated.

Thank you, mate! You just saved me some bucks. Back in April when I got my TCR this was available only for R. I was waiting to be available for the TCR also, but hearing it I think I like the stock more and for sure does not justify the huge price.

This will sound daft, but one of the reasons I just got rid of my 7.5 GTi was how crap it sounded. They all do, even the TCR and the R. Fantastic engine, crap noise. Oh and that akrapovic exhaust sounds no better than the standard one!

I completely agree, I have a 7.5 PP, and the only thing that lets these down is the exhaust note. I feel a Scorpion coming on!

I agree. Being 4 cylinders they sound like every thing else on the market. Dare I say, like a boy racer exhaust. I know its old school but its such a shame they no longer have a VR6 powered Golf in the range... R32, even the old 4Motion sounded fantastic, stock.

I expect when the time comes I can still replace the stock one on mine with something tastefully fruity for less than the £3k+. My standard one pops and crackles more times than others, nearly 3k miles now. My Mk2 + Trackslag exhaust is good for the sound, prefer the more subtle TCR sounds for everyday use. I wish the current fashion for anti-social exhausts would run its course. I do not want to hear the sound of an E888 engine...at all. GTIs are great cars to drive and that's where the pleasure lies imho.

The bangs off the MK7.5 R with Akra exhaust are borderline illegal! I've a Mk7 GTI-PP DSG with a Clubsport S exhaust and the bangs on gear change are very loud in the first 3 gears. But I think the 7.5 GTI (and TCR) was affected with by the WLTP and it seems the farts were mapped out or the exhaust system prevents them, or both! The DSG now just sounds like an automatic. My next car will hopefully be a TCR. I like the pops and bangs on over-run but don't like the lack of proper DSG farts when driving it on in manual mode. I think these have been a characteristic of the gearbox for some years and it's a shame to map them out. I don't think they use anymore fuel to make them either.

It doesn't really get over in videos. But the stock exhaust is really good. I almost bought a Hyundai i30 because of the sound. But the day of the test drive i fell in love with the quality and extras and DSG (what i prefer). The 20k more or less weren't a deal breaker. Im always surprised of how good it sounds in real life driving past me. It really doesn't get over on video. But im thinking of a exhaust from APR, especially because the warranty isn't affected, that's the nice thing with APR. Pardon my English.

I love the Golf Gti's & Golf R's but they all sound the same to me. Also hate the fart sounds on cars. To me it sounds like the car is broken lol. £3k for the Akrapovic exhaust, all depends how deep are your pockets plus if you do decide to sell the car at a later date, most new owners will be more interested.

For looks..the Grey one all day long..Lovin' that colour recently..its becoming as popular as black..In terms of the sounds..in all honesty..I'd say the standard red one had a nicer burble to it..and subtle pop. The Akrapovic sounded raspy..like it had been blown....

It so close I wouldn't spend any extra that''s for sure, especially the £320 a year extra road tax for 5 years that you'd need to pay as you'll hit the £40k luxury car tax threshold with just a few modest options now the list price is £37665 😱

Well to be honest... I got a TCR with Akra too...and it Bangs and Pops a lot! This comparison imho is not good. Why? You compared the standard exhaust in sport mode with the akra exhaust in normal mode. You can clearly hear that. The switching operations are so quite and smooth (without farts) what just happens if you are in normal mode! So I just can say that my TCR with Akra sound (in sport mode) like it should! I think that the grey car with Akra was NOT in sport mode. A few comments before the video creator answered that both cars were in sport mode but i doubt this! Btw iam from Germany... mabye GB has different exhaust standards.. i dont know... mine sounds as an akra should sounds like!

I have to agree. It was me that asked was it in sports mode and the reply was yes. But I'm not at all convinced. Yes, maybe UK spec is different or perhaps quieter than the rest of Europe. I get my TCR with the Akrapovic titanium exhaust next week, very excited. I just hope it sounds good. Not like the one in the video. Also, they did a launch at the end with just the standard exhaust but not the Akrapovic exhaust, why? I'm not convinced by this video. VW simply wouldn't put an expensive akrapovic on the car and it not sound any different.

Not this new bullshit sounding 2 pipe) This car have had an absolutely stunning sound - loud, brutal... like a beast. But after this new exhaust regulations this car sounds really poor... maybe this is the same case here? I dont know...

They are the same. I own a red TCR since April 19 with standard exhaust. The standard is very fine: not too loud, not too quiet!

Stock gets my vote in terms of VFM. It may release a few performance benefits, but I'd rather spend the cost-price on options or enjoy the throttle and save the pennies for fuel. I can't imagine it improving the residuals much either.

I'm reserving judgment till I've heard it in the flesh and I also appreciate that it takes a while to run in before the exhaust starts to sound good. I'm excited either way 😁

sounds pants not worth the 4-5000 euro´s, they really did ok upping the end pipes on the first the club sport and now the tcr, would rather buy an aftermarket hjs down pipe with stock exhaust and save the rest off the money for gas he he, but why do you have to se the rear box when driving behind a golf gti??? my first mode would be rattle can it black so it does not show. that is a big minus on gti from 5/6 and up regards Sören

Yes indeed, he was editior of VW Driver from 2000 - 2019 and Audi Driver 2015 - 2019 and part of the team behind GTI International and Audi Driver International. Sadly that all went out of business in Feb this year but he's editing a trade magazine about engine building now which seems a lot less hassle.

I listened to this video whilst driving, and really struggled to tell the difference. The standard exhaust sounds better than I expected and the Akrapovic isn’t worth £3K. Solution - buy the standard car and get a Remus fitted. £2K saved and it’ll sound much better than the Akrapovic.

Pretty much what I'd concluded, the standard car sounds a lot better than a standard exhaust Golf R. There is always the possibility there have been some mapping changes across the model year but it's impossible to know for sure. I say that as the standard exhaust popped a lot on the overrun while the Akrapovic didn't.

I have replied this comment to someone else already 😊 But probably because he had it in normal or comfort mode. There's no way the one with the Akrapovic was in sports mode, no way. The revs where too low when driving along and the flaps are definitely closed. The Akrapovic is £2.4k, it just wouldn't sound the same as the standard one (which I admit sounds good in isolation). Something isn't right here! Obviously I'm very disappointed seeing as my TCR arrives in a matter of days and I've waited and paid the extra to get the Akrapovic titanium exhaust, so I'm expecting it sound bloody amazing, fingers crossed. @@ghostinthemachine76 No question I'd take TCR over R. Even in the dry yesterday with diff set to Sport it was squirming like my Clubsport S used to and I like that, it means you have to think about how much throttle. Also 70 mph feels like 70 mph, in a R 100 mph feels like 70 mph (I did drive mine in Germany so...). While that sound like a great achievement it does make it feel a little remote. TCR lets you drive, R drives itself.

I'm confused 😕 Why doesn't the Akrapovic sound miles better for a £2.4k exhaust which is now standard on the TCR. I've heard other ones on RU-vid with the Akrapovic titanium exhaust sounding amazing. Plus it burrbles more which I didn't hear once in this video. I have to ask the obvious, was the car that had the Akrapovic exhaust fitted, in SPORTS mode when you did the test? I find it odd that people don't seem to understand you are paying the premium for Akrapovic because the system is made out of titanium? :) It's always going to cost a lot more than stainless steel exhaust systems, be it the stock system or other aftermarket systems. Of course, you can get a similar or louder exhaust sound for less money (be it simply by deleting the resonator from the standard system or Milltek, Remus stainless steel systems etc), that has always been the case. :)

Hi Stuart, I'm afraid you'll need to contact a main dealer for the part number. To get the VIN, there are some websites (like ECP trade site) that will give you VIN from VRM, I shouldn't really post it on a public forum but if you DM me via Insta or Twitter I'll do it.

Both were quite farty between changes, particularly the standard one. Do you know if there were WLTP changes for the 2020 model year? I assume the 2019 car was WLTP approved anyway wasn't it and had a petrol (Otto) particulate filter?

Yeah this really just proves that you need a new downpipe if you want more volume from the exhaust... You can honestly keep the stock catback and just get a downpipe if you're looking for an audible difference.

Unfortunately not the same onride recording-setup. micro on the grey akrapo-TCR sounds pretty bad. Interesting fact: I ordered my TCR by the End of October 2019 with standard Exhaust, and picked it up January 11th surprisingly WITH Akrapovic Exhaust! :-)

Akrapovic was standard for 2020 model year so cars ordered after approx June 2019 would have all been equipped accordingly.

This akra sounds a bit naff, probably the PPF in the system they have to install now, probably best with the standard system then change to an akra with downpipes the works,would be a hell of a lot better than the vw offering

Yes I completely agree with you. Something isn't right with this video and even though the creator said they were both in sports mode I'm not convinced at all. The TCR with the Akrapovic sounded flat, like it was in normal or comfort mode.

Trust me it was in Sport, both were in Sport, I have a witness who is Neil Birkitt previously of VW Driver magazine who did all the driving and revving. The OEM part is quieter so don't compare to aftermarket Akrapovic

@@volkswizard thank you for the reply. Maybe I just don't want to believe it having spent the extra on the Akrapovic (without being able to hear beforehand) 😇 I'll wait till I hear mine in the flesh. Pick it up next week 👍🏻 I also appreciate that the exhaust will need to be run in. Plus, the Akrapovic may have some sort of performance benefits with less weight and possibly a better flow? Albeit slight.

I actually think the standard exhaust sounds better. I certainly wouldn’t spend the extra money on the other exhaust anyway

I have replied this comment to someone else already 😊 But probably because he had it in normal or comfort mode. There's no way the one with the Akrapovic was in sports mode, no way. The revs where too low when driving along and the flaps are definitely closed. The Akrapovic is £2.4k, it just wouldn't sound the same as the standard one (which I admit sounds good in isolation). Something isn't right here! Obviously I'm very disappointed seeing as my TCR arrives in a matter of days and I've waited and paid the extra to get the Akrapovic titanium exhaust, so I'm expecting it sound bloody amazing, fingers crossed. Otherwise I should have simply bought the demonstrator... And fingers crossed its not just a UK WLTP or OPF thing 😔 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rNN9tRxGqS8.html

doesn't make enough difference to warrant the extra money cannot for the life of me see the point in paying big money for an akrapovic system on a vw golf when you can get a scorpion system for a fraction of the price

Because its done from manufacturer so its all under VW's warranty. As soon as you start to do anything aftermarket to a brand new car, you void your warranty. Audi is the same with their Akrapovic exhaust.

The Akrapovic is made of Titanium Alloy, it's more premium and lightweight. :) Plus this is an OEM part, within allowable noise variation from stock (aftermarket Akra systems without resonator, or most aftermarket exahsuts for that matter, exceed the allowed noise).

akrapovic sounds 5% better but not worth the £3k or so vw charge. standard sounds ok but it does still need something better...remus, bcs, etc...

Standard Akra, there is not really a big difference, not worth the money. there are cheaper and better exhausts on the market.

It definitely sounds better in certain situations but seems to lack to the overrun pops of the standard exhaust, weird, maybe that's WLTP changes?

@@volkswizard I am interested to see the emission specification we get in Oz when TCR is released here in October - our current GTI is Euro 6 and on 95 Ron outputs of 180Kw and 370 Nm with engine code CHHA are quoted along with 0-100 time of 6.2 sec with DSG - if I consider replacing my RS265 I'd want similar performance AND sound :) although not sure I can give up manual trans and lively RS chassis.
