The ‘chest to sky’ feel has really helped me to find a repeatable and more centred swing. Spent (wasted?) so much time on other drills from other online coaches-this one is fundamentally and positively effective-with added bonus of immediate feedback leading to consistency! This has revolutionised my swing and allowed enjoyment to once again return to my game!

Best instructor on RU-vid! Chest to sky and keeping your head centered is critical to consistent ball striking. One extra thing I found helpful, from the top, swing out to right field in follow through.

Eric...I have had lateral movement problems for more than 70 years...even when I was low single figures. Starting to play again after lock-down I've been struggling again and looking on line for a solution. Your explanation of the mechanics of the problem is by far the most lucid and helpful that I've found...particularly the 3-dimensional element. Thanks for an excellent insight. Percy.

Hi Eric. Just went out side and did the shadow drill. I found I indeed moved right off the ball. Used the combination of extension of the thoracic spine, using the thought 'keep bent but chest higher' and left shoulder to the left foot and that worked great to keep me centered. So once again, a video with with great tips. Good job! Love it. Thanks for all you do for us amateurs struggling with the golf swing.

I had already started working on this when I found this video. My thought was to keep my right shoulder inside my right foot throughout the backswing. If you move off the ball the first thing to happen is that right shoulder goes outside and around that right foot. I look forward to trying the shadow drill. Thanks!

Great instruction Eric. I feel many of your vids are aimed at better players or people who are nerdy about the inner workings of technique and fundamentals of the swing. As a low handicapper all my life (5 and below), almost 50 years of golf, I find them really helpful and your style is nice to work with. I like these long vids (12 mins) as they keep me company on the drive home from work. Keep it up.

Came across this while I was looking for a cure for the occasional topped shot. Tried it last night at the course and the results were unreal. Solid contact with irons and the driver. It feels strange at first like I'm going to drive the ball into the ground ..but the sound of my shots and the trajectory have improved dramatically!! Thanks!

Great video. I’m finding with a longer backswing and staying more centred , has got me my power back. Although my weight does feel more on the inside of my left foot, having said this, I feel very coiled and feel confident rotating through. Unfortunately Eric , I live in England, so the shadow drill is often a no no . Keep up the great videos. Best wishes Gary.

Some of the best tips I've ever seen and I've been studying the swing for a very long time! I've been as low as a +1 handicap but I'm very inconsistent because I sway off the ball, I always have and I've been trying to "fix" it for years. Your tip on the chest towards the sky might be exactly the thought I've been looking for! Thanks!

Hey Eric, this is another awesome insight... I first started watching your videos 2-3 months ago, i had all the old favourite swing faults crossed at the top from cupped left wrist (your video on wrist condition solved this for how I understand things and learn), early extension lack of rotation (was a combination of 4 or 5 lesson videos and instruction videos that solved this for the most part) I realised that this video was the final missing piece getting rid of the last little bit of EE, I had a bit of trouble with the first couple of shots ( I was moving right and left to recover and not moving right and staying centred still felt the compulsion to move left which put me way ahead of the ball and stuck through impact) added the left shoulder feeling like it’s pulled up and behind me and wouldn’t u know it ...... open through impact and more than ever before. All I can say is thanks for all the information you give in a way I can understand it. I am from Australia your videos have changed golf for me 12.7 - 8.1 in a little under 3 months cheers man appreciate it all soo much Ps pre ordered your website 👍

The chest pointing to the sky drill creates so many good things in the swing. It produces more power, better turn, puts you on a more upright swing plane if it’s too flat which has been my crutch for years. The only thing that you would probably have to be aware of with the left shoulder pointing down is a reverse “C” on the follow through if you keep your weight on your right side too much. Shadow drill is genius. As usual, great videos Eric.

I have been trained to do this wrong. As a 16 year old my PGA pro used to give me such a hard time about not getting behind the ball(letting my head move backwards) in the backswing. I always disagreed with him, but thought I must be missing something. I’m 37 now and I’ve finally realized that staying centered is the key to consistency. I went to look for videos of anyone who might think the same as me, and that led me here. Eric Cogorno might be the best teacher in golf.

Great video and I like that you are not afraid to give "Stack and Tilt" credit for the now popular centered turn swing most good players are using. The S&T swing method has been treated negatively by golf traditionalists but it truely is a good system and it is easy to learn.

Eric, this is exactly what I do in my swing. Too much lateral movement leading to inconsistent ball striking. These two drills are perfect and can be done at home during the winter. I have always lifted my left heel in the backswing, so I need to practice not doing that because I don't see you doing that.

Great Video - For the ball and shadow drill is it possible to use it for the transition? If so could you allow the head to move down, relative to the ball, to accommodate more forward bend and/or back a little to allow some side bend? Say if you were rehearsing this in slow motion? Thanks for the explanation - As always a great breakdown of the movement detail in a way that allows me improve right away.

Great video. I am one who has constantly struggled with moving off the ball. As you mentioned my right side feels very passive and my right shoulder does not have a feeling off going up and behind me. I tend to collapse my right arm and get flat and restricted with the arms. I can make the move to stay centered without a club doing the drills you suggest but when I try to do it with a club, it is difficult in terms of my spatial awareness of the club/arms/hands. Could you offer a feeling of where the arms, hands and club should feel in space relative to the body as one tries to stay centered?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 лет назад
Absolutely...everyone can do it easier without the ball...always more difficult when the ball is there. I can't really offer a stock FEEL for what the arms should do...that is too dependent per person..If you're arms get too far behind you (deep) like you say you would need to feel them going more vertical...left arm more up, not in...left arm off chest

I had had a problem with swaying for a long long time. For 80% of my shots I somehow kept it in check, or I somehow compensated and was still able to hit the ball well. But for the rest, I would often top the ball. I finally figured it out. Now in my backswing, I put pressure on the inside of my right foot, (I’m right-handed) because I realized I was letting my weight shift go to the outside of my right foot as my body swayed back a bit. As Eric often says, one motion leads to the opposite motion which means I would sway forward after swaying back. But now, by putting the pressure on the inside of my right foot on the backswing, it anchors me. My head doesn’t shift. I don’t know if this would work for everybody but it was one of those revelations that really helped my swing.

Thank's again Eric for another top notch video. Hard to make "Shadow Drill" work real well here in Seattle with out artificial lighting. But I get the point.

Nice job. Very good explanation. Personally, i was lacking the extension part. Once i found it, i notice an increase in power too!

Great video as always Eric. Quick Question, by pushing the left shoulder down versus going back is this potentially setting up for a reverse pivot?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 лет назад
Well, if you execute it incorrectly. It really depends on how you define reverse pivot.... Reverse pivot to me would refer to too much lean of the upper body toward target during backswing. Thats can happen from a combination of movements or lack of movements (turning, tilting and extending). Left shoulder should go down and to the right, not just down.
@gregoryrizzer3455

Roger that. I just went to the range and practiced this for an hour. I am 6 foot 4 and have larger arms and shoulders. I have struggled to find any swing thoughts that truly help keep to keep me centered. This was great. Thanks again!!
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 лет назад
My pleasure. In a literal sense if you're moving too far off the ball you would need to look at 2 pieces 1. Left side bend (left shoulder more down) 2. Flexion/extension ( the more you stay in flexion the more you move off the ball)

I watched the video and gave a very hardy and stupefied laugh at 3:27 to 3:42 because trying other movements never got me to FEEL them correctly. YES, I must extend my spine to keep my head centered during my rotation. Bro, been struggling 15 years and wasted all that time slaughtering the sod. I can understand what you and GG speak of. Oh, and GG is the MAN!!!!!

Hi Eric, it's a great info for me. And i think this wiil help me to hit behind. However, if my left shoulder aiming my left foot, I don't think I can have a 90 degree turn? Is that what I thinking is right? Thanks
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 лет назад
Left shoulder to left foot is just a feel if you move off too much...still want to get to 90*....adjust accordingly

Eric, Ive had a bad problem of reverse spine tilt for years trying to keep my head over the ball. I've been taught recently to keep my chest pointed down in the same arc during my back swing and that my eyes should be looking at my right foot at the top. This puts me in about a 3 degree ish spine tilt away from the target. I have had success with this so far but my head does move off the ball. Should I add more hip turn and left knee flection?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 лет назад
Thanks for the message. I would have to see your swing to be able to give you good specific advise. If you've been moving too much toward target during backswing, then a FEEL of moving more off the ball may very well be good. OK to move off ball some so long as you move back toward target on way down

Ive seen where you mention opposites in golf with past videos. (For example, Upright backswing equals a more shallow delivery) But my question is, will a slight lateral movement to the right during the backswing provide a more ideal impact position? For example Henrik Stenson. Thanks hope that made sense.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 лет назад
Not necessarily...too many other variables involved...weight shift or not doesn't guarantee anything . I do like a pressure shift into the right foot while keeping body mostly centered

G.Gankas adds also 2 balls at the hips level on the shadow (one on each side) to check that the hips also stay centered. It is no good to keep the head centered and let the hips moving away from the target for instance. It will help to have the complete feeling and not introduce a fault to succeed in keeping the head centered. Uh, at least, I think so... ;)

I find myself coming back to this concept when my irons/wedges get inconsistent. this won't cause a reverse pivot though? should we start with a little bit of spine axis tilt to the right on address?
@CogornoGolf

Glad to hear that. Well it could...you need to record yourself. You can overdo anything. Record yourself. Draw a circle around head. Keep head in circle

Would you say you start turn with both hips and shoulders or do you feel shoulders start first then hips catch up? Wondering if I’m starting with hips too much is causing me to move off ball
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 лет назад
I would say same time feelings best for most....but what you should FEEL depends on where you're coming from. Slight start with shoulders first OK

Shadow drill, man that's gonna be useful at night under cooler conditions and using a night light source, I'm in the south and I need to work on stuff in cooler temps Haha Another SOLID technique drill, I use drills in baseball lessons and if I get them somewhere else that's part of learning and using what works. If it works No Shame in da Game baby!! It's all for a greater cause of learning, gonna hit the range this morning before work and concentrate on a couple feels from your other videos, as stated before let the Haters hate cause you're pumping out SOLID fundamental instruction, thank you Sir!!!!!!!!!!!

So I tried out the Tee to Thigh drill and pushing with my right arm more, certainly helping my slight draw to not be so bad when I miss hit, swing, and as I stated in a previous comment I love the strong grip etc, well pushing with my right arm, hand takes the dominant strong grip out some, feels different but I'm ok with it, was certainly hitting more none hooking shots while messing with those techniques, gives me something to work on, I'm gonna hit the range again tomorrow morning and see if I can work on those some more!!
@TheBaseballseason
@TheBaseballseason 6 лет назад
So after a second range outting I'm certainly not hooking the ball like I was before, the pushing with the right hand, arm is helping the cupping of the left lead arm, so now I'm getting a few pushes to the right which I know my swing path is In to Out causing that. So it seems my hook issue was Closed club face and In out Swing path, hopefully I can get the swing path better soon to continue the progress!!! Thank you sir!!
