The #1 Speed Killer In Putting
It was an honor to film with David Orr at his home course, Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, NC.
David Orr is one of the leading putting coaches in the world. His teaching method is based on research, not on theory. ‘Never guess what you can measure’ is one of his key philosophies. David’s research and teaching protocol led him to the PGA Tour where he’s worked with world-class players such as Justin Rose and Suzann Pettersen. Check out www.flatstickacademy.com to get access to David’s personal, online putting academy and the absolute putting gold he shares there.
In this video, David shows us exactly where you are killing your speed in the putting stroke and a new method (and thought process) to help you hit consistent putts.

Another big speed killer in putting is selecting a putter that is way too f'n heavy! Brad Faxon, Ben Crenshaw, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Loren Roberts "The Boss of the Moss", and Tiger Woods and many, many other great putters, all use putters with headweights less than 330 grams. You might want to consider NOT drinking the Kool-Aid that all the major putter manufacturers are enticing you to drink...

Kudos to Mr. Orr for mentioning the genius Geoff Mangum. Geoff Mangum's OPTIMAL PUTTING explains that of the three rhythm's, 1.short and accelerate 2.long and decelerate and 3. pendulum rhythm; short and accelerate, and long and decelerate are both considered "spastic" by the instinctive brain. Only the pendulum rhythm will promote instinctive distance control. "What works and why in cooperation with the instincts on the putting green", is a study worth starting.

I have watched this video many times and can appreciate the advise. However, as one who uses a slightly open stance, my ball placement is more towards the inside of my front foot, not in the center as you and David were demonstrating. Did he mention at any time that he only recommends a square stance and the ball in the center of the stance? Thanks

Hi Eric, great video series with David. I would be interested in David's thoughts on grip pressure. Having watched so many putting videos, the traditional advice is always 'light grip' and 'stroke' the putter. This is the first video I've seen where the word 'force' has been used when talking about putting. I wonder if with all of David's research if he has found that many poor putters try to have too light a grip pressure as is commonly taught. Thanks for the video.

I have never been a bad putter (amature) but listening to this video about putting is common sense, a lot went into the transition and the length of both strokes Yet nothing was mentioned about what hand/arm too use! Putting uphill and using a bit harder in the transition is only going to create a pull or a fade towards the hole! The minute you try to force a putt, the less chance of you succeeding for sure!

Cool video Eric. Can you elaborate on the force back and in transition being the same? Do you mean the level of force applied? Or with the same hand (or hands, shoulders, whatever you feel)?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 года назад
Thanks, Bryan! My interpretation of the information discussed during the 2 day conference.... The force you FEEL you put into the club to get it going back you would feel roughly the same in transition and downswing. "level of force applied".....yes.......from my interpretation. That force (I) felt with my hands.....but of course there are other factors contributing as you mentioned.

For me, I sometimes can feel a slight loop towards ball line at the top of my backswing. My set up is sound and always wondered why I feel this. Now my guess is that I am not transitioning with enough force causing the loop back to the insight. The loop is very small feeling, not a big actual loop. Any insight on this? Thank you Eric and David. I have been a member on Flatstick before! It’s really awesome! Kevin

Hey Kevin! Thanks for being with us! For me (can't speak for David) I would have to see your stroke to say for sure exactly why that would be happening, what's causing it, how much it matters, how to fix, etc... Level putt, maximum acceleration is at impact and at the center of the arc. Arc of the entire stroke is symetrical. But how is the arc on the forward side of the putt after impact symetrical to the arc on rearward side of the arc before impact. Would not the energy that is transferred to the ball during impact cause the arc on the forward, departure side of the ball to be slightly less than the arc that approached the ball? How is the energy that is transferred to the ball accounted for in the measurement of the total arc of the putting stroke? I guess it depends where the center of the arc really is. In the middle of the ball, at the rear side of the ball, at the forward side of the ball? Even a little before the ball so there is a slight upward stroke to the ball at impact, as some putting pros advocate to help lift the ball out of its "depression" caused by its weight upon the grass of the putting surface.
