@@NotAScratchGolferdo you simply use the shot tracer app or something else. Would love to see a video on how you film this and edit it. Keep up the great content!
I wish I could say the same....smh I would break 80 a lot more if I had no three putts. I just shot 83 yesterday and that included 3 three putts. Turn those into two putts and that’s already an 80.
@@buffaloben15golf88 Well of course I don't know what you are normally able to score but 83 is impressive. I still need to break 90. To many 3 putts and chipping that is not yet on par with the rest of the game. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Great viewing! As an Aussie who has played a lot of golf in Canada, mostly in AB and BC, now I'm hankering to get back there! Really enjoying your vids and thank you - cheers from Sydney, Dave
@@NotAScratchGolfer Wow - great question and it's made me realise two things: how quickly time has flown and how my memory has faded! I played quite a bit around Calgary at some lovely courses and as I recall, somewhere near Kootenay Lake. I will contact my old golf friends in Calgary and get back to you with some top courses! Dave
Really enjoyable to watch you go through this. I'm sure a lot of people want to give you advice but it's obvious you know what you're doing and how you're missing. That said, I can tell you choose the driver because you're young 😁. Very nice putting.
You’re quite good over all and a really good putter! My average score is in the low to mid 80’s. I got fitted for a new set of irons to replace the over 20 year old ones I’ve been using . I’m determined to break 80 this year! Thanks for sharing, you’re so enjoyable to watch!
@@NotAScratchGolfer I’ve been using King Cobra Tour II irons since 1998. I got fitted at Club Champion Golf for the new Cobra Rad Speed irons. I hit those really well in the simulator. I’ll be gaining about 30 yards and getting more forgiveness as well. They should be here by mid April...I’m so excited!
@@mandy10ca Unfortunately I broke 80 only a couple of times last year. This winter I’m grinding really hard at the indoor driving range to hopefully improve a lot. This is actually the first winter where I’ve been doing this. I have high expectations for myself this next season.
I just got into golf last summer and sometimes I struggles to even make solid contact with the ball, but watching you is very inspiring. Love your channel!
Great video -- really goes to show that if you limit ghastly mistakes you can go low. I shot a 91 after never being able to break 100 last weekend, and I remember walking off thinking how "easy" it was to shoot that when I'm not losing balls off the tee or playing from the woods every hole.
My friend, there’s many golfers out there even on tour who have downright horrendous swings and still get the job done. Tommy Gainey, Matthew Wolff, Bubba Watson, etc. And DUDE! Your mid-range putting was EXCELLENT!
Thanks, Robert. I'm sure we'd both like to hit the ball further and would benefit from it. With that said, we can get away with dinking the ball out there when we're not playing courses that are 7,000 yards!
move up and play a course where you have 8 iron in on average (that's what the pros play). You'd be surprised how good you are when you have a scoring opportunity on 11 of the par fours if you hit a solid tee shot
Dude good job! I’m a 9 handicap and this right here shows the average player that golf can be fun no matter what you shoot! Keep it up, btw your putting is money
Dude when your putting is ON youre a couple bad shots off scratch but then when its off, its OFF. At least you get a few ON rounds haha still waiting for mine. Keep up the great content!
Awesome video once again my man! Like to see the thoughts and see the improvement! It would be cool if you even did a couching vlog With a pro coach. People love those!!
That phrase "it's difficult to recover from a great drive." Is too true, I had amazing drives today, perfect draw going about 270-290yds and for some reason most of my wedge shots shanked :(
Thanks for posting. You have some nice videos. It’s nice to see those tight draws with the driver. It seems like your putter miss is short right. I suggest aiming for 5-10% more break. If your first putt is not 1 ft past the hole, then your speed was off. Or aim higher on the apex of the break. Good luck.
@@NotAScratchGolfer Could be pithy and go Strange, Terrible Golf. I think the Strange incorporates most elements of Compelling, and I believe it will test well amongst a very select set of Monty Python revivalists.
@@NotAScratchGolfer how long does it take to set up the cameras and record? Its a neat thing you've done and I wouldn't mind recording all the shots of my rounds just to remember how I played each hole. Does it throw off your regular pace
This tells me that I can shoot below 80 if I could putt. You made everything from 8 feet or less. I spent a lot of time on my wedge game and driving off the tee but can’t putt to save my life lol
Thanks Jeremy! I don't expect to drain fistfuls of 8 footers every day, but on days that I do it *really* comes out on the scorecard. Keep on grindin'!
Thanks Paul! I can pull up a report on my app but I believe my average is just below 30 (which might be misleading because my home course has small greens so my GIR is a little artificially deflated - lots of putts from the fringe don't make it into that stat). I consider a good day to be 28 or fewer. My all-time low is 23.
Such great par saves! I hit 12/14 fairways the other day with 10 pars and 1 birdie. still didn't break 80 because I missed the relatively short-ish par 1-putts and my blow up holes are bad.
Do you have a “go-to” distance? You often hit 4 wood from 200+ to the green and have a tricky 40-50 yard chip/pitch left. Would you prefer to always have, say, 100 yards in?
This is a fantastic question and a great discussion topic. Thanks Alan! Indeed, my 4 wood is a 200-220 club. If I miss it (especially in cold/wet conditions that we have here at this time of year), I'm often left with those short pitches you describe. Generally speaking I'm actually comfortable with these pitches and prefer them to hitting a full wedge. With that said, something I need to think about more is the danger in play if I miss short. 40 yards on a sidehill lie to a tucked pin is not a good place to be, and I leave myself there too often. These types of course management decisions absolutely add up significantly for handicap golfers. I think about them a lot and you did a great job honing in on one place where I need to be better.
@@NotAScratchGolfer pleased to give you a few thoughts. What I love about your video is it is what amateur golf is like! Your scorecard shows a great number, but doesn’t tell the [sometimes] tough story of how you got it!
Thanks! I'm in Vancouver, Canada. This video is at Langara Golf Course. My previous videos were shot at Kings Links by the Sea (Delta, BC) and Shaughnessy in Vancouver (designed by the same architect as Langara). Thanks for the kind words. The shot tracer app is called "shot tracer" for Android. There is an iOS version, too. It's still in Beta and cumbersome to use so I'm not sure if I can recommend it. I'm looking for an alternative but haven't found one so far.
@@NotAScratchGolfer Thanks for answering my questions. I have made a couple of golf videos as well but my channel is mainly a drum cover channel. I was looking for a shot tracer app for when i decide to make more golf videos!! I subbed your channel and I am excited to see your progress!!
You have a very good short game! You have good hand-eye coordination on the full shots. If you would just not take the club back so much on the inside, your full shots would quickly get better. I am sure you heard that plenty of times before. Thanks for the very enjoyable videos. I can relate to them. My game is the opposite of yours. I hit 10-12 greens, but my short game is awful.
Bro, that recovery on the 9th! Way to keep your head in the game, so easy to get negative especially starting with a bogey. Also that 17th hole looked like a basketball hoop 😂, what's going on there?
So much potential in that swing!! But right now everything is so flat and closed you will smother hook push hit fat or thin because the club face isn’t in line with the target for long enough through impact Solutions are never related to problems :) Just need to find a way to get the club higher on the backswing - I promise :) If you like a visual think about a triangle where someone behind you sees through the triangle between the arms at the top of the backswing From there the club can stay on line through impact You make so few other mistakes in your swing you can easily break 80 every time you play if you just do this
Thanks! This is an interesting tip. I take lessons here and there and of the myriad of issues I've been told to work on or contemplated working on, this one always crosses my mind but I fail to work on it. Maybe I'll try this swing thought (w/ the triangle) on the range. Thanks again :)
Hi Steve! The mat I use is called the VariSpeed Putting System (so named because you can adjust the mat to run at four distinct speeds on the Stimpmeter). The game involves accumulating points for stopping the ball in different sections of the mat. Bonus points are awarded for also stopping the ball on the center line. My floor is uneven so I put less of an emphasis on the ball *finishing* on line than starting on line when I practice at home. So, the game primarily helps me dial in my feel/distance control. The last point of the game involves stopping the ball in one precise spot. It's very difficult and incidentally sharpens my mental game because it can be tedious and frustrating. I mentioned this in an earlier comment, but I find the psychological aspect of putting to be most important. Obviously some foundational technical skills are necessary, but I attribute 90% of my putting aptitude (easily the best part of my game) to my psychological approach to putting, which I'm going to try to summarize in a video soon. I hope that's useful!
@@NotAScratchGolfer thanks for such a complete and thoughtful response. I was reading all of the comments specifically to see if anyone had mentioned your putting and what your response was. Don’t think I’ve ever seen seen a player at your handicap (thought i saw you were a 5 or 6) who putts as well as you do. Saw you mentioned a potential putting video. I’d look forward to that greatly. Thx again!
@@GolfPokerTaylor No prob! I feel like I have no business whatsoever playing to my handicap but the flat stick (and often green side chipping) have helped a ton! I should mention that I don't go out and make a fistful of 10+-footers every day, nor do I expect to. I find a lot of my playing partners have unrealistic expectations out there, particularly on the putting surface. I subscribe to a theory of "you can't *hole* every putt, but you can make every putt." I think that one was from Joseph Parent but don't quote me. In any case, the point is that you should be able to commit to a line and start it on that line the vast majority of the time. Sometimes your read will be off, sometimes the rub of the green will bite you...whatever. You might not *hole* those putts. But psychologically, you can certainly "make" every putt if you've committed and executed on your plan.
Entertaining, and you are a very good putter....at least +4 or +5 on the same ability golfer due to your putting. I think I count more as an average Joe though than your 78. My video of a usual 100-110 on a course like this (mid 90s on a wide open course where I can hit a bunch from adjacent fairways) would be 2x as long. "I hit the 4th pine tree along the right....now we're gonna play from the mulch...that one's wet, going to take a drop here...this one for triple bogey." Plus a lot of bleeping.
Hi Kim! I'm trying to put together a great putting video and it's been a challenge to distill it down to a digestible video! Here are some scattered thoughts in the interim: I came up with a game that I play at home on a practice mat that has helped me tremendously with distance control. I encourage everybody to develop a fun way to practice. With the full swing, "bad practice" is time wasted, but I think that all time spent practicing putting is time well spent. Once you're comfortable with distance control, the next most important (mechanical) aspect of putting is *starting the ball on your intended line*. There are plenty of drills to ensure you're doing this properly. Frankly, I don't do them myself :p I will share more about how I think about the technical aspect of putting in a video, but the factor superseding literally everything else is mindset. I like to say that golf is really two sports: "golf" and putting. I literally switch into a totally new mindset when on the putting green: "golf swing is over, now we get to play the putting game!" I *love* putting. I'm rarely nervous or tense over the ball on the putting green (on days that I am, I will never putt well). I think it's necessary to find a way to enjoy putting and feel confident on the putting green...even faking confidence is fine in the short-term. I've read a few books that have really helped with this. I recommend Joseph Parent, Bob Rotella, and Dave Pelz. I hope this is helpful!
Thanks, Brandon. It's definitely the sharpest part of my game. With that said, it's not like I drain fistfuls of putts from 5-10 feet every round - this was a good day. Don't be too hard on yourself :p
Haha I've been leery because I don't think people want to know what's in the bag of a hacker. With that said, it's been requested a few times now, so maybe I'll do one! Thanks Drew.
He is consistent which is the main thing. Just need a slower take away keep your head down through impact and push the driver head through to 1 o'clock on the clock face and your handicap will come down. He holes out well.
Playing against someone who doesn't consistently stripe the ball and still put up great scores can be frustrating, great scrambling! Getting up and down is the biggest key to scoring low.
This whole video should be a commercial for that putter. I think its a Scotty X something. He made it look like an average golfer can putt like a god if you have that thing in your hand.
Anyone with a 10- 15 hcp can break 80 for a career round. All you need is some luck. A long putt, a hole out, a good bounce etc. It won’t be a regular event but it’s more than possible. If the person is a sandbagger, it will happen often especially in a money game or tournament!
