In this video, I am reading the verse in 1st Samuel 9:2 that mentions that Saul was taller than all the people simply. According to some of the Jewish commentators, he was head and shoulders above everyone not just physically, but also in wisdom and character. The rationale that Saul was depressed and therefore unable to confront Goliath also works within the framework of the Masoretic Text as well.

I know average was around 5'5" for men but you have to think that's an average and there had to have been taller men, than 5'5" and above so King Saul I think could've been somewhere closer to the 6'0" or taller. Remember the scripture says he was head and shoulders above every man in Israel. For example here in the US height for adult men is around 5'10", but there's tons of men taller than that in the 6'0"-6'6" range and then you have the really tall men 6'6" to about 7'0" like NBA players which could be considered head and shoulders taller than the tallest average men.
Men, let's say Saul was between 6-6'2" tall (1.83-1.88m tall) and Goliath is aprox. 6'9", as the oldest biblical texts say. Na if we calculate, Goliath seemed to be at least 7 inches taller, with an aprox. maximum of 9 inches taller. That's about 17-23 cm taller than Saul. And, the term 6'9" for Goliath is just an aproximation based on the average cubit size, but if Goliath was 6'9.5" or even a maximum size of 6'10" or 6'11"? I don't think Goliath doesn't look much bigger compared to Saul. Conclusion: Saul: 1.83-1.88m (6'-6'2") Goliath: 2.05-2.11m (6'9"-6'11"). Thats height difference between 17 and 22 cm, with a maximum possible of 28-30cm. Saul wasn't intimidated only because of Goliaths height, he also looked like a fearsome man, he had a spear, a sword, a shield and of course, he was head and shoulders covered in armour, but, the thing that intimidated all those people, is that that the philistines and even he pretended that he was a mighty warrior, but when David came with that sling, it's like putting a sitting duck in front of a man with a gun. They also didn't know that the source of fearsome size was also the source of his vulnerability, because the poor man had acromegaly, that's why he also didn't react properly when David came with a sling because back then all people knew who's gonna winn now, but why? Because experienced slingers are at least 90% equivalent to gun sliers.
The Bible said Goliath was a giant. I think the bible’s definition of giant was clear, in fact tat detailed descriptions of the dimensions of his weapon is instructive too. Saul was relatively taller that an average Isrealite, but he was NOWHERE near Goliath
Goliath was a giant like the Bible says. Saul was tallest for Israel like the Bible says. The point of the whole story ia that battles are not to be fought or determined by the flesh but by faith in God, which David had but Saul did not.
I think king saul is coward to goliath because of goliath look like very strong and scary looking guys that's why king saul scared of goliath even tho goliath height and king saul height are almost the same
