The book and film were written and made in the 30's, but neither (especially the book) pulled any punches as to how vicious these two could be when they felt used, humiliated or disappointed. Very frank exchanges.
Read the History of the author! She was a fascinating WOMAN! Theo story is based VERY much on her personal experiences with listening to the old soldiers speak of their experiences during that time!
Heidi Bentley, I’d say so myself, what she did was very brilliant and creative that she made a dress out of her own curtains, kinda reminds me of the sound of music!
He knew what she was going to say from the get go and he would have actually given it to her, mistress or not, if he'd been able to; he's telling the truth when he says he's put all his money is in English banks (understandably so, considering the precarious state of affairs in the South) and if he tried to draw on it the Yankees would take it in a second. In the book he's described as shoving his fists into his pockets as if straining at his own inability to help her. He's actually admiring the lengths she's prepared to go to to save Tara.
😅😅😅😅Best scene ever " U r not worth of 300 dollars. You will never bring anything but misery to any man" 😅😅😅" You can come to my hanging and I will put you in my will" 😆😅
As a designer, Scarlet inspires me in this movie because She used her creativity to make a garment out of a curtain fabric because at that time there was a war and they almost didn't have anything to wear. What an inspirational movie...
Um NO! Mammy took inspo from a pattern book and you can see here, she did her own thing with the sleeves and the hat and tassel. This was Mammy’s hard work- make NO MISTAKE BITCH. :))))
Sorry but whenever I see this scene all I can think of is the Carol Burnett spoof where she still has the curtain rod on. Harvey Korman was brilliant as Rhett and says, "Scarlett that dress is gorgeous!" And she says, "Thanks, I saw it in the window and couldn't resist it!" Cracks me up every time!!
My daughter is just like Scarlett. She never returns texts or emails or phone calls. To my surprise, she just called to say hi and catch up. When it was time to end the call, I said it was so nice to hear from her. She said, oh, one more thing, I need some money again to tide me over this month. This was right after she excitedly told about her upcoming trip to Paris. I quoted this very scene from GWTW: “Sorry, my money is tied up at the moment, so I haven’t got anything to give. So you see, dear, you’ve abased yourself for nothing.
Marcus Silverbåge that's what makes her infuriated! He's playing with her mind, just going about and saying what he thinks, which she has no sense of telling him what but I love her spunky attitude!! Which she isn't afraid to speak her mind and she's very exquisite. Rhett is speaking his mind too!!
Actually, I don’t think he did know. He believed her until he noticed her hands. Him playing along like he was going to give her the money was fitting payback. They are equals in every way.
Actually, he didn't know from the second she came in. Have you read the book? He was not a fool, but still a fool for Scarlett and wanted to believe that she cared for him, even if just for a moment.
Scarlett was heartless in so many ways, but Tara was her heart. It embodied her love for her parents; recall when she slapped her sister Suellen for saying she hated Tara and Scarlett told her it was "the same as hating Ma and Pa."
Well you have to remember that she WAS desperate, she was literally starving and so was everyone else at Tara. Rhett was her only chance of survival. There's a line later on in the book when some of the Atlanta men refuse to work for Scarlett, because she's a woman and they are too proud, and Scarlett retorts that you can't eat pride. And she's right. Putting up with a few insults is nothing when your life is literally on the line.
I'm reading the book, I'm close to the end now, but what I remember is that this scene in this book is way more complex. She does not just try to make him think that she would give in to marrying him, but at the end she is so desperate that she goes as far as to propose to be his mistress, and because he laughs it out and does not comply she faints and is so humiliated for going so far and not getting the money. Book is way better.
@@Backup_Plan I hope you have read the book by now. Censorship forced the simplification of the scene, but a good script and good acting gets the message across. The whole scene is a masterpiece of innuendo.
In the book she doesn't faint out of humiliation, she faints because she starts screaming at Rhett and tries to lunge at him, Rhett puts his hand over her mouth and restrains her so as not to bring the guards down upon them, and that combined with her tight corset and the shock, makes her pass out.
It's was a open ending . We can assume the love RHETT had for scarlet that he would eventually forgive her and she would prove her self and that they would end up together. So it was not a sad ending ..
Loved clark and vivien chemistry! Although Scarlett was to blame for their failing relationship, still gutted to see Rhett left in the end without giving their marriage another chance since she finally realised he was her true lover and loved him all along.
Was Scarlett to blame?!? I mean Rhett willing entered into a relationship with someone he knew didn’t love him. Then constantly antagonized her and brought out the worst in her personality. I’m not saying she is without fault but he is to blame as well.
@@johnivory3245 Yes, what about when she told him she was pregnant and he replies "who's the happy father?" He knew perfectly well it was his, a result of the night when he carried her upstairs. And yeah, he knew she didn't love him, Scarlett even said so when he asked her to marry him. He replies "that should be no problem, I don't recall love playing a part in your other two marriages."
@@teribradshaw-milling3164 ummm?!? Have you actually watched the movie or read the books?!? Literally their first interaction together is him antagonizing her over Ashley.
They did end up together , that was Margret Mitchel tried to incline to in the end of her novel , just read the last two paragraph of it and you will be sure " With the spirit of her people who would not know defeat, even when it stared them in the face, she raised her chin. She could get Rhett back. She knew she could. There had never been a man she couldn’t get, once she set her mind upon him. “I’ll think of it all tomorrow, at Tara. I can stand it then. Tomorrow, I’ll think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day.” !
Remember they had a made for tv movie that was called Return to Tara or something back in the 90s. Val Kilmers wife, Joanne Whaley Kilmer played Scarlett but I dont recall who played Rhett or Ashley. It aired on CBS, I remember cause that channel has always given me the creeps. It's funny, I know, but something about channel CBS makes me anxious; the shows, the news, the commercials! But yeah the remaining portion of the novel was put into a mini series for television AND IT SUCKED!
@@michellegriff13 It wasnt the "remaining portion of the novel," it was based of the book "Scarlett" which was an authorized "sequel" by another author. Feelings about it were...mixed to put it kindly.
Btw... the tapestries on the wall or the drapes of any wealthy household, were a sign of indulgence and true wealth. She wears incredible fabrics on her back
I love the show American Dad. Roger the Alien is always wearing costumes, and in one brief scene he has the “curtain dress” on. So subtle, you either get it or you don’t
If they were trying to make the dress look like it was put together on the fly, they didn't pull it off. :) A half capelet on one shoulder, peter pan color over a steep v neckline, accessorized hat, curtain cords used perfectly as piping. Whoever made the dress is skilled and could've gotten a swank job in town as a dressmaker to help make some money.
when i was 13, while i was reading the book i was saying, when ill find a man as Rhet Butler than im going to get married, now i am 21 and i am still saying that :))) ... and Scarlet, she is my streingt.
