@@Hamishtarah This was, in fact, a very dishonorable act. Especially for that time period, when officers were ostensibly held to a standard of honor and good conduct. It makes sense that he would be deeply uncomfortable with the events that transpired, especially if he is a younger officer who has not yet seen all of the brutality that war has to offer.
3:11 I love the detail of the younger British soldier on the left being surprised to hear the new detail of the prisoner being a father/son situation, but the older veteran soldier on the right, his expression didn't change, he's steadfast and loyal.
Lol it's just extras doing their thing. No need to look for deeper meaning. The one on the right doesn't even look much older. He could also have just joined.
That British Lieutenant took no pleasure at all in ordering those rebels shot, he was obviously a man of honour who didn't like shooting unarmed men and you can tell he has no liking for Tavington at all in the way he reacts first seeing the colonel approach
Not the first time Tavington did this to those that have surrendered or were wounded. Remember Gabriel went back wounded to his Family home and told them that he saw a Continental Company surrendering but the Dragoons rode into them and massacred them all. Not to mention General Cornwallis later had a meeting with the Colonel to talk about his brutal tactics in the field and to those that surrender. There were probably a lot of British Officer that didn't like his methods while they saw him in action and later reported them to the General. In one of the deleted scenes they called him by the nickname, "The Butcher"
As much as I love this movie, shit like this would never happen. If the British did stuff like this regularly, every colonist wouldve joined the revolution.
Tavington is loosely based on General Banastre "The Butcher" Tarleton, who was known for his brutality and savageness both on and off the battlefield. He loathed the rebels with a violent passion.
I feel like the colonies becoming independent from Britain was the best decision they could've possibly made, after seing what's been happening over there in the UK, lol.
@Loukablyat . There's no free speech in UK, at this point, on top of that the justice system is arguably worse over there, the police force sometimes won't even track down criminals because they supposedly don't have the man power, and the illegals are causing mayhem over there, Yes I know the us has school shootings, but the uk has a terrorist problem
@Loukablyat . I disagree, There's no free speech, and the British have a very controlling government, (the government litterally force people to eat certain amount of salt, no wonder their food is so bad) that makes it seem like 1984 is a reality over there, plus, on top of that a pretty bad/incompetent police force that sometimes won't even track down suspects because they don't have the "man power".
Thomas was warned, by his father, to stay his hand. Benjamin is a seasoned fighter. So, if he is advising caution, then best too heed it. Plus, where was Gabriel going too run to?
Yeah. Sad scene, but he kinda brought it on himself. Then again, he’s young, and adolescents (especially boys) tend to be impulsive. His brother was about to be hanged, and he was desperate to save him.
He was a child. They notoriously aren’t known for thinking things through completely. He just wanted to save his brother and did what he thought he could. It cost him his life. He just wanted to help
The son couldn’t be in Zenon 2 because he was busy getting killed during the revolution. Rip to the girl that played the youngest daughter she died in real life
Unfortunately it happens in war. Even recent wars, Americans tend to pay the families off in the hope they don't seek retribution or become terrorists. Common practice
Scene might hit a lot less hard when you understand teenagers were pressganged into the redcoats. A lot of those soldiers were probably the same age as the kid.
4:50 one of the most heartbreaking reactions you will ever see on screen 4:54 one of the most evil reactions you ever see on screen Mel Gibson and Jason Issacs are masters at their craft
4:54 Apparently, according to someone at least, this line was Isaacs complaining abt the horse he was riding on but didn't realize the camera was rolling.
One of my favorite movies of all time, I love American History so much. Also that British Colonel gives me chills, he is like the devil in a uniform. His eyes are even as cold as steel. When he speaks every word is measured.
Watched this over the course of 3 days in my history class in highschool last week, good movie and the whole class was crying when gabriel died and the teacher walked around with a tissue box, class went crazy and clapped at the end when ol dude died
This shallow movie made the class cry, seriously?? Wait until they actually see real horrors or suffering like Schlinder's List or Letters from Iwo Jima.
1:54 “we’re not slaves” Yeah right buddy XD Because screw historical accuracy! No way we could make Mel Gibson’s character a slave owner (even though the guy they based him on absolutely was)
he could free them and work on their farm...? where else are they supposed to go? work as a congressmen back then? this was a better life than what made them a slave to begin with.
@@trition1234 It’s true some slaves did return to field work for paid work since it’s all they knew. Some found other small jobs. However in this case the character Mel Gibson is based off was a slave owner. They changed it for the movie for obvious reasons.
This movie is a such a joke 1. The first PLANTATION we are shown has “free men” black Americans working it despite the fact that slavery was the top norm in the land and the person Benjamin martin is based on was a slave owner the second plantation we are shown is an actual plantation with slaves owned by the sister in law but all them are good boys and love their white mastahs 2. The british literally force the “free” men to become soldiers, this never happened in fact it was the British who were freeing slaves and many slaves chose to join the British against the American colonials who enslaved their people but we can’t have our slave holding heroes and main characters be seen as the bad guys it could confuse people in a movie about the importance of freedom to wonder why they are cheering for the side that actually owned and used slaves... 3. They have the British commit mass atrocities (many of which were based on nazis crimes from the second world war, not the war of independence) yet never show the “patriots” crimes which involved the torture, murder, tarring and feathering of loyalists, their children and families and or the crimes perpetuated against loyalist populations which caused many to flee to Canada 4. the only black man in the movie, is literally signed up to fight for the slavers and helps the slavers despite once again the british being the only one freeing slaves at the time Jesus what a bunch of BS.
I was at a convention where Jason Isaacs shared some stories from shooting this movie. According to him, when he said "stupid boy" he was just complaining about the horse he was riding and didn't realize the camera was still recording him
@@TFY-v8l This was well before the Slaves were freed you nincompoop this was in the 1780s and the actual character Mel Gibson's character is based on was a slave owner not only that but his slaves fled his plantation to fight for the British which says alot about him. Slaves for the most part were treated very poorly and the ones that weren't were few and far in between. Alot of slave were convinced to participate in share cropping after they were freed which was just slavery with extra steps.
@@TFY-v8l That depended on when and where you were. Many slave states had laws that freed slaves had to leave the state or else they'd revert to slavery. They didn't want free black people around to give the slaves the notion that they might be free as well. I don't know if South Carolina had such a law at this time or not.
Skin colour had nothing to do with it!!! Some British treated the people of other nations like they were slaves!!! I hate to break it to you, but black people weren't the only ones to endure slavery in our planet's history!!!
Within the (future) US the redcoats were really no more evil than the colonists, the patriots and loyalists both did pretty awful things against each other and the patriots would go on to do far worse atrocities to the Native-Americans and the African-American slaves who themselves usually supported the British due to patriot treatment of them. The real atrocities of the British Empire were conducted in Ireland, India and Africa, as the 13 colonies actually had a fairly privileged position within the empire and were not subjected to the worst of British policies like artificial famine or concentration camps.
Do you understand now?! This is why we measure weight in tons, distance in miles, and temperature in Fahrenheit!!! To punish the British for what they did!!!
I absolutely love this movie as a movie, but historically this is awful. British soldiers never treated POW or civilians that way, as they intended to renew the trade with the colonies after the war, so they were very careful not to antagonize the population. Jason Isaacs' character is based on a really guy, though.
There was some pretty nasty violence against civilians, but most of it was from American civilians or militia on one side against American civilians who supported the other side. It's estimated that something like 1/3 of Americans were loyalists. There was also a lot of violence against civilians and torture and murder of civilians both by and against Native Americans who got involved in the war. But it is true that British regulars generally did adhere strictly to the laws of war and tried to avoid antagonizing the civilian population.
@alexdeeds5397 I grew up in a time where I saw this too often. Men and not men anymore. It's quite the weakened society. I am ashamed how far we have fallen.
@MarianaCarvalho-gu8zx Woman are far more toxic than men. They even hate it when another woman is either better looking than them or more successful than them. Anyone who says otherwise is lying.
One of the worst movies ever. It is so inaccurate, full of artistic license with zero respect for history. Gibson loves to use movies as a platform for hatred towards anything British or English. This is up there with Braveheart. Why were We Were Soldiers, and Apocalypto so good?
They also contrast really well, of course that’s going into color theory. Side note, the army isn’t the Royal army, they are the British Army, even at the time of the revolution.
@@horsewings3561 For a 1st world developed country like the US that likes to lecture other countries about human rights and also fought against a major colonial power, you would think the US would understand Vietnam's struggle against colonial invaders...
@markdexter6338 I'm sick to death of people bringing up stuff from the past. Give me modern day problems. Listening to anti American retric accomplish nothing other than bitch8ng and whining. Blame the government, not the citizens just trying to get by.
