The DP stated that he´s never worked with a lower light budget than on this one.. He also said the director forced him to have all the dutch angles to make it look like a "comic book"..

The dutch angles were actually the fault of director Roger Christian (who's terrble). He thought they'd make the film look like a comic book.

The best part about Battlefield Earth is how relentlessly incompetent and stupid the aliens are.

It's 2020 and I've already rewatched this episode three times this year. And it's JANUARY. Hands down the funniest episode because of how Kyle and Brian lose their minds.

I was looking for enjoyable, in-depth discussions of this movie on the RU-vids, and yours was the first channel whose hosts didn't bug the crap out of me through their theatrics or strained attempts to be funny. Like your natural style. Keep it up.

Fun fact (for my millionth comment): David Miscaviage(current president/overlord of Scientology) went to go see this, along with thousands of other Scientology members he commanded to go, on the day it came out. Afterwards he told John Travolta it was THE BEST movie he has EVER seen and that L.Ron Hubbard would be so happy it. As soon as the reviews came out he quickly blacklisted Travolta and declared the movie to be an "abomination" that had "no relation to Scientology what-so-ever"

Most incompetent aliens ever! They can’t even stop cavemen from taking over. This makes the aliens from Signs look like geniuses.

I love how cavemen flying a handful of 1000 year old jets won against the aliens, but when thousands of seasoned military pilots using new-ish well maintained birds tried, nope!

Actually they wouldn't have been called "manimals" in the script for two reasons. The first is because in the novel, they are called "man animals". And secondly because it's considered one of the cardinal sins in $cientology to change or "squirrel" the words of L Ron Hubbard. That's grounds for some serious ethics violations or what the rest of the world would refer to as punishment. They got away with one example of it in this movie though and only because the original term used was racist. The sad creature that was in the learning machine called a "Clinko" was originally called a "Chinko" specifically named after the racist term used for Chinese people. L Ron Hubbard had a hatred of the Chinese and considered them sub-human.

I worked in a movie theater as an usher when this movie came out, so I got to watch it for free the night before it came out as an employee of the theater. That being said, after it was over, I said to nobody in particular, "I want my money back."

Fun fact, the book this was based off of is like 1,300 pages long, and a lot of the nonsensical things that happened where like 50-200 page plots in themselves. The "I know karate" scene was JUST about learning the language and took like 6 months or something. That and they ignore the books entire last act, though it was more of a political type of thing more than action.

I am utterly baffled that you guys don't have infinitely more subscribers. I just recently watched Battlefield Earth for the first time (does anyone ever watch it a second, except for the laughs?) and immediately after went in search of a good review to help me process what the fuck I just experienced. I by chance found this channel! Holy shit I have never laughed so hard at a video...ever...especially a video of just two people commenting on something. I first saw it and thought "72 minutes? Fuck that I'll watch a few but no way am I watching the whole thing." I have literally wasted my entire work day watching this video 3x in its entirety. I am just now moving on to your other movie reviews but felt the need to stop to let you both know just how fucking amazing you are! Thank you sirs!

As the guys from Red Letter Media had said, with a little retooling this could have been a great comedy. Like the fact that the entire alien civilization are pompous, ugly, self-seving, corporate idiots but somehow conquered the universe and then get defeated by barely competent cavemen could have been a commentary on corporate culture / government bureaucracy. Instead we got an overblown film that takes itself WAY too seriously to honor a book by a guy with a boat and his own personal cult.

Some of the celebrities that went to the premiere left early and walked around the building so they didn’t have to give a review to the media.

This has got to be one of the very best episodes of your show. With not one but two breakdowns that were gloriously entertaining concerning the Director of Photography and the "cavemen flying harriers". But you also as usual did a good job highlighting the underlying problems. Vanity projects like this can make for some of the most hilariously over-the-top movies given how you can feel the sense of importance just oozing off the screen at the same time failing so bad it's laughable and you can't help but wonder how even a number of the ideas actually made it through scripting. In that vain one I'd love to see you guys tackle on "GOOD BAD OR BAD BAD" one day is "HUDSON HAWK". The brainchild of Bruce Willis and the one story credit to his name...for a reason. Though I'm sure you must have at least heard of it by this point. It's just too insane and disjointed for words. I saw it for the first time recently and I immediately thought it was tailor-made for your show! Whatever the case, keep up the good work.

Were the "hands" mentioned? The alien hands that look like they were bought for $1.83 at a gag gift shop? Every time I see those hands I nearly fall out of my seat laughing. And they even have varying amounts of fingers...

I'm glad you guys spent extra time ripping on the flight simulator and harrier jets scene. Harriers are extremely complicated airplanes to pilot and to engineer and after over a thousand years of having no maintenance a bunch of cavemen say "piece of cake" turning themselves into ace pilots and aerospace engineers. I remember seeing this movie when it first came out and wanting to punch everyone involved in it's making. It's so damn bad.

In blade runner she was a replicant, which is the only reason that scene made sense. The film simultaneously shows us her power and her victimization by a cruel human race that slaughters and rapes replicants cause we can. It also shows her desperation to live. How the fuck did that guy fall through all that glass. You'd think the first hit would stop his motion and make him fall in a pool of blood or go by at twenty times the speed where the Lazer is pushing him so hard he can't stop and breaks the last pane by the one second mark

Brian is the king of peaking his fucking mic, its glorious.

They can fly jets. And the jets are fully fueled and armed. And the jets still work after sitting unused for like a century. And the jets can fly from washington DC to colorado without refueling. And they can hover after a long flight like that. And they can engage in combat manuevers afterwards.

The part where brians camera wasnt working makes it even better, like the insanity of what hes saying has turned him into a still frame of anger

Excellent episode, guys! I saw this years ago and thought it was one of the worst movies I'd ever seen (especially for a film with an actual budget). One brief comment: your thesis about cavemen flying fighter jets is obviously correct, but let me go a step further. I'm a former USAF pilot and the USMC Harrier pilots I've spoken with describe it as one of the most challenging and unforgiving aircraft to fly ever built, even for experienced pilots. It's accident rate tends to bear that out: of all the airplanes on Earth you couldn't teach yourself to fly, the Harrier is very close to the top of the list.

I loved, loved Brian's reactions to the Flight Simulator stanza in this horrible mess of a film, and I'm SO glad you guys pointed out the incredibly poor special effects in such a high budget movie. Granted, some of the mat paintings were ok, but the lasers and practical makeup effects were just the worst. Those PAWS they use for the alien's hands are as laughable as the stilt legs.

This was always a guilty pleasure of mine. I knew it was all out crazy but I just couldn't turn away. Thanks guys, great review!

For some reason when I heard John Travolta, I thought Tom Cruise and thus spent most of this in confusion trying to figure out where Tom Cruise was. I actually spent all of Tropic Thunder waiting on the Tom Cruise "cameo" and not realizing he was the agent, so I just assumed I was having a similar trouble here.

Given the budget for this film... You know the production company was investigated by the FBI for over-inflating the budget to defraud investors. This was probably made for less money than the budget states.

I love the review guys. The commentaries and reactions were one of best I ever sat through. Battlefield Earth has always been a guilty pleasure for me. I did a few "B" type films back in the late 80's that I thought were embarrassing until I watched "Battlefield Earth"! I played the (Demon) in the film "Demon Warrior" which was an attempt on cashing in on the slasher flicks of the 80's. I purposely hadn't watched the film you guys just reviewed, until today. This came about with recent popularity of "Scientology" bashing. Hence I came across your unique RU-vid site & subsequent review of the film "Battlefield Earth". Of which I agree is a steaming pile of excrement! Now back to my the film I was in "Demon Warrior". NOTICE how I didn't say that I "Acted In" the film! LOL I was curios if you would like to watch the film (I'm fairly sure you haven't viewed it), and do a review of it. I sort of want to compare the budget of $100,000 -vs- $73,000,000 for each of the respective films & your opinions. I was actually looking forward to seeing the "ANOTHER FIFTY CYCLES" scene, but you completely missed it out altogether! Why would you do that when it's one of THE most unintentionally funny scenes in the entire film?

It looks like an old long lost Stargate episode that was never shown for obvious reasons. But with that said, I actually kind of like it.

When I was in my early teens the book of battlefield earth came out. There was a competition in a magazine to win a copy of the book and the L Ron Hubbard composed album. Yes you read correctly. I won the competition and the book well it’s a wonderful door stop. The album is arguably worse than the movie. And oh my god this film is terrible.
