Why is it so hard to find something with a volume knob??!? When driving you want to just grab a knob without looking - going for touch controls just seems counter-intuitive.
@@ready2blowup when I was installing the unit in my 2005 Lincoln town car I figured hey if it's going to cost a couple extra bucks, I'll get my steering wheel controls to work. Well, I looked up the module to do it with, well over $100, and the only steering wheel control is the volume up and down. The cruise control and other functions on the steering wheel were unaffected. So I said screw it!
4 recommendations for future radio videos: 1) Bluetooth phone call quality. Would love to hear how I sound to the listener. I think this is super important stuff 2) Boot up time (from the time I start the car). 3) Time to get Android Auto/Apple Car play connected and running. 4) would like to see you run through the stereo without cuts. I want to see how laggy the UI is & how laggy Apple CarPlay/android auto is (I know processing takes place on the phone, but screen refresh rate dictates that). Maybe do a casual run between going into setting, adjusting the EQ, then going into the radio, switching the preset, then going into Apple CarPlay, opening maps, inputting a destination, then going into Spotify. This is extremely important as any glaring issues with responsiveness become known to us. And it lets us know if the budget option is good enough to live with.
CarPlay loads instantly. CarPlay is also butter smooth. CarPlay has only slowed down when my phone overheated in Vegas 124F. MOST headunits (Pioneer, BOSS, Kenwood) will be slow and laggy but I never personally see the stock interface cause CarPlay.
I built a system around the Kenwood head unit that is very similar to the JVC tested here. I am very happy with the sound quality when playing through Kenwood Excelon amplifiers, Focal component front/6x9 rears, and an Infinity Kappa 1200 sub in a sealed box. Preset buttons suck for the radio and XM, but I stream Tidal for most of my listening.
Do you happen to have any idea on the difference of the quality? im looking to purcahes a head unit for my jetta and have been doing exhaustive research lol
All 3 seem to be good head units. The last 2 are both out of my price range and the one that is ( planet audio) I’ve never heard of that brand until now. I’m sure that’s because I’ve just recently exploring and learning the car audio world because I’m wanting to upgrade my 2007 Silverado extended cab truck. I did upgrade the factory speakers to 4 pioneer TSA 1680 speakers that made a big time difference. I’m wanting to change the speakers to the MEMPHIS PRX 602 after watching your video about speakers and now I’m looking for a new head unit ( 2 din ) and the last thing I’m going to do is install a new amp. Don't know if you ended up getting a new headunit yet but the Sony avax something 5000 is good with a built in amp. If you're not fussed on a reverse camera you can get the cheaper model
For me it's all about sound quality - what volume level do these headunits distort with the internal amplifier and with RCA outputs? 2V is good, 4V is better to stay with your theme.
Most radios start distorting around 75-80 % of the max volume depending on the way the song was recorded. Except maybe pioneer were you could almost take it to max before distortion BUT that’s not a good thing because the output is lower and if you are playing a song that is recorded lower the stereo might not let you play it at it’s full volume potential because of it. And yes 2volt is good 4volt is better and 5volt is best! Thanks for the comment !

I've been in the car stereo game for awhile now and I usually prefer Pioneer, Alpine, Sony, or Kenwood. I've recently installed the Kenwood DMX4707s in my Toyota 86 (I forgot to take my pioneer out of my Scion Tc when I sold it...dumbass mistake) and hasn't been an issue yet. Im really happy that its not as 'laggy' as the previous Pioneer unit i had. I quickly replaced the factory stereo cause I couldn't live without Android Auto lol.
It’s the most junk headunit I have ever owned. Crashes over and over, apple car play disconnects an insane amount of times but headunit never turns off, screen freezes constantly,

I have a Boss which is basically Planet Audio. I was sucked in by the 80w/channel, and it doesn't surprise me that it sounds like a transistor radio trying to power a full sized speaker. No matter how I EQ it, the bass sounds thumpy yet mushy and distorted, the mids sound thin and non-distinct, and the highs sound tinny and harsh. In short you can make it sound precise and overly technical in weaksauce way or if you want base you get thumpy mud.
Does your Camaro have Bose speakers and amp? How does it sound? My trailblazer had the Bose system but some crack head stole the radio so I got a $120 Sony single din and the sound quality was INCREDIBLE. But my ram has a standard single din ken wood and the sound is okay. I was wondering because I have a Honda Odyssey now and it’s got a built in amp and I’m wondering how it’ll sound with a kenwood set up. I hate the factory stereo. It sucks even though it’s supposed to be the premium sound. It’s tinny. The kenwood radio with kenwood speakers in my old ram are better.
@@justinfincher2385 I didt have the upgraded stereo in my camaro,I bought the car new and ordered it to my liking. ya huge difference with the 7706 head unit in the car its night and day for sound comapared to the factory unit. even with the shity factory speakers it sounds pretty dam good.should have done it long ago well worth it.
When looking for a head unit I wanted something without big tech integration.. no Apple, no Google/Android.. but I did want bluetooth connection, MP3, DVD, backup cam, SD etc.. to be honest there is not much out there especially from the bigger companies that have not bowed down to big tech. It took me some time but I found a SSL (Sound Storm Labs) head unit that meet my needs. I already run a Garmin 7" nav so I did not need an integrated for that. At around 140$ the DD764BR meet what I was looking for. with a full range of RCA outputs for the amplifiers I run with external crosover.
Hey I’m thinking about going with this same head unit , just curious is there any lag time at all between your phone and the stereo Bluetooth mine currently has a bit of a lag when I play or change a song it takes about 2-3 seconds
I have a Honda CR-Z. The factory hu doesn't look like much but it's made by Clarion. It's factory fitted to a Pioneer amp and runs Foster component speakers and a small sub. 340watts overall. I only have to turn the volume to 10 to be more than adequate in the car. AFIAK, I'm more than happy with this set up as it has a cd slot and I'm a geezer who still uses cd's. Bells and whistles? No but it does what it says on the tin. This car is going to my son once I find a replacement. He's mad for it and he really likes the TEYES hu. Every review I've seen of that hu has been nearly 100%. I think if that unit catches on, JVC/Kenwood, Pioneer et al, will be crapping themselves. As I said before, I'm now considered geezer class. I only went with Pioneer or Trio (the orgin of Kenwood) for my cars back in the UK. My best set up was in my last RS2000 that had Pioneer speakers all around, a Trio hu and I had a Clarion graphic equaliser/amp that has a spectrum analyser that would bounce up and down as the music played. This was all before running a sub.
Great Video I bought a Atoto A6 for my 2013 F450 double din navigation system seem to work after 8 months started to not come on till cab got cooler and navigation Completely confusing when it linked to phone wireless,iv been wanting a new deck and because of your video I think I'll try out the Kenwood iv searched and kinda confusing but u made it simple,Wish it had navigation but if I can link my phone gps to the Kenwood that will work Keep up good videos 👍👍👍👍👍
What about the Hardware and Software, which is quicker and more fluent when using them? That is something I never see in these reviews. Speed and time to load things are top on my list. Is the Kenwood, Pioneer, JVC, Alpine any of the name brands better than the others in loading times and touch responsiveness?
Never even heard of Planet Audio. I'd like something better than the factory in my 2020 Tacoma but don't want the give up any of the factory features like Android auto, back up camera, steering wheel controls or have a smaller screen.
You have a pretty big screen in your truck Look at the floating monitors. You can retain all factory features with the maestro RR. We’ve done done those in Tacomas they look good.
I have the jvc 750bt and love it, have a lot of features that you would find on a higher end Kenwood which is what I usually have. The jvc is awesome and cheaper than Kenwood imop it’s just as good of a comparable Kenwood. Jvc makes Kenwood anyway
very poor expereince with JVC,buggy/unresponsive at times. had single din JVC completely fail and freeze up one day. Piped up the extra for a pioneer AVH 2500NEX last winter, love it and is always super snappy even in -40. Wicked Crossover control built in
Meanwhile my budget was a Boss Audio BE7ACP-C. It almost seems like a rebadged version of the Kenwood you're looking at here, because all the features are practically the same.
They may look a like but they are definitely different and not rebadged. They only thing that will look the same is the carplay or android auto. We carry recently started carrying Boss because of the head unit shortage so we know first hand that there is a big difference in the sound quality and over all quality of that Kenwood radio. The Boss is a great value because of the price and they definitely have improved over the years. Funny thing …I had my old Boss rep at the shop yesterday and he asked me what If I knew what BOSS stands for. He said Buy Other Sh*t Stupid. LOL I thought that was pretty funny but if your enjoying that radio I’m glad to hear it because we now sell that brand.
@@BreakersStereo Yeah I know a JVC or Sony would be better, but they were out of my price range. And I know the ~$100 range won't be any good. This one is $250, but I had a $100 Walmart gift card and that was the best one they carried. I noticed the head unit shortage as well, as my original choice was a JVC (since I have a single din in my Jeep that's one) but they were sold out. Dang microprocessor shortage. I have a Lincoln Towncar so I wired the head unit to the factory amplifier, as the built in one is indeed pretty weak. Dual LFE subwoofer out is nice though, I got a subwoofer kit from hifisoundsource which came with everything I needed to install, since it was my first install, overall project was a fun learning experience.
Nice! Glad you enjoyed the process of creating your car stereo system. Picking it out and installing it makes listening to it even more enjoyable. Those Lincoln towncars have a pretty decent stereo system when it has the factory amp and just adding a subwoofer is a great way to add to it. I’m trying to find a Fully active compatible HU, must have bandpass for mids/rear. I’m only finding units with low pass, can anyone point me in the right direction?
I've been trying to get an Android Auto double din, but it is sold out everywhere. I'm willing bet the global "chip shortage" has something to do with delayed manufacturing of these stereos. Here in the US at least, Crutchfield and Best Buy are all out of stock with no date as to when they'll get more shipment :(

Pioneer dmh-1770nex is a nice one IMO best buy had them where I live and ordered a replacement for two day shipping as well so might want to take a look
I will be installing a full system in my daily driver "90 corvette". The local shop has me in line for a big screen Kenwood Excelon unit, Excelon for front kick panel speakers, Excelon 6x9 5 ways for the rear, a Kenwood Excelon subwoofer in a bass tube in the rear, with a Kenwood Excelon 5 channel amp. It should be really loud, considering how small the interior is in a corvette. Hopefully, my car doesn't blow apart... Just sayin. Lol !
Just found your channel and subbed. I have a 95 Nissan hardbody that I have a pioneer AVH-1400NEX in and I want to add a volume knob. Any idea how to get this done? I hate that all radios have gone without volume knobs in double dins
Best way to do it would be to add a eq that has a master volume. Many years ago the eq was a must to any great system. Now most double din radios have one built in. Look at the AudioControl THREE.2 Or the Memphis EQL7 for a more cost effective solution.
Looking for something I can still build on. Since I plan to put a kick ass stereo sound system. So I guess the Kenwood is my best bet. I hope it fits in my 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Classic. Thanks for your review. There is so much out there I didn’t know which was the best.
When you say the radio has a camera mode does it connect to your factory cameras or do you have to buy aftermarket cameras. And also on the Bluetooth for your car does it connect to your factory Bluetooth or does it come with an aftermarket Bluetooth.
You don't by chance know of a good 2-din head unit for a 2004 Toyota Sienna without JVC, do you? Android Auto Wireless is a must. Don't care about a GPS, I can do that on my phone. I would need a backup camera, as well, one that will easily survive going through a carwash, since I'm disabled. I live near Orange County, your shop is probably 85 miles from me, so I'd probably use someone closer. I love your channel, though.
Awesome and helpful video. I have a 1997 Land Cruiser I'm wondering what you would use for an add on steering wheel control for the stereo since it doesn't have any.
The steering wheel controls adapter are for cars that have existing buttons on the steering wheel. There is no adapter that can add them. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for the comment

The only good head unit for me ? The one with aux input. I bypass and use ipad mini with apple lossless music and through a dragonfly cobalt ( external DAC ).
Quick question. With that rear cam you have the yellow wire goes to the front of the car then you have two wires one black red strip and then you have red. Behind the deck you have the trigger wire. From the rear cam you did what ? That's what's giving me hell . It either comes on full time or not at all. I was using the rear reverse light as a power source, then the black wire I put to a ground . Any idea what else to try Thanks !!
When it says "ANDROID AUTO" or Apple CarPlay on the box, its not a real ANDROID CAR STEREO, because that means it needs to connect to your phone! The entire time! A real Android car stereo does not need your phone for anythig, because its an android phone + Stereo in one. Old style car stereos with android auto or apple play rely on a connection with your phone and a bunch of software to connect, which causes a lot of pitfalls and random failure points! This includes suddenly loosing your map display, or certain maps don't work at all, and you constantly have to fumble with the phone AND the stereo, instead of just the stereo with its large and fixed screen that you don't have to hold, so you don't run out of hands while driving...

What’s more crazy the new JVC v660BT has everything the pioneer deck has now Apple Maps apple car play backup camera dvd/CD and pioneer is the same price but it’s very hard to bypass a pioneer deck u have to by $100 bypass chip wire board
A couple years ago I had breakers install the JVC kw-m750bt into my 2016 Honda Accord sport. I’ve been happy with it for the most part but sometimes the radio don’t recognize my phone or sometimes it disconnects if I run over a pothole. I’m thinking about upgrading to the kenwood DMX907S mainly for the wireless feature. From what I understand wireless CarPlay is more of a new car feature because it requires WiFi in the car, my car currently doesn’t have WiFi so will this work for me. And if it does how much will this upgrade cost me?
The JVC is a great unit and the issues your having might be able to get handled with an update to the software as far as the wireless feature there is no need to have WiFi in the car it uses WiFi that is created by the headunit to connect. So if you want to upgrade let us know!
the kw-m750bt, so far I have to have my phone plugged in to see my apps (android) and not sure if I really do or if I did something wrong. I programmed the clock but on some screens it shows the wrong date/time

Question. I recently purchased a 2011 Land Rover LR4 HSE and I'm looking to upgrade my OEM radio head unit but I'd like to retain rear camera function along with my suspension monitoring, is there a unit you'd recommend?
Any top brand unit should be good with your camera like Sony, Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood, and JVC. As for your suspension monitoring you're going to spend hundreds on extra parts to retain that information at bay. That said that's where it gets tricky as to what unit to buy.
The JVC sound like what I am looking for for my 02 Mustang GT. You say the JVC has wall paper. Does that mean I can add my own image to the display. Also, I wasn't clear about if I can use my iPhone's Bluetooth to listen to Napster or Sirius XM. This is what I am looking for and if you have a better recommendation for me, I would appreciate it.
