Today, we're diving into the good, the better, and the best work boots on the market. We'll be discussing the pros and cons of popular brands like Red Wing, Brunt, and Nicks Boots but also seeing how they hold up to real jobsite conditions. Tyler, an IBEW apprentice spent one month wearing each pair of work boots and reported back on how they performed.
Whether you're a mechanic, a farmer, or an electrician, choosing the right work boot is crucial for your comfort and safety. We'll be comparing durability, quality, and performance to help you make an informed decision. So, if you're ready to own better and own less, make sure to stick around till the end of the video.

Reviews of high quality workwear, boots, and clothing for men to help you own better and own less. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well and allows you to own less and own better.

As someone who’s worn just about every level, make, and model of boots, there’s something to be said about having a very high quality boot on your feet and not having to think about your feet while on the job site. It’s a sense of security and provides a safer personal environment. You don’t have to go $500+ but I’d suggest considering it or atleast going mid range and steering clear of the epically cheap boots. When you’re new and starting out by all means going cheap in the most desirable option but once you advance in your trade go for the higher USA made options, you’ll have a tougher break in but it’s worthwhile. I will say with Nick’s the break in hasn’t been that bad in my experience.

Awesome video! Thanks Carl. One thing I would say about the Red Wings is that you can get the 10875 (same exact boot as the 875 but with oro original leather instead of oro legacy) for around $285 U.S. It's a great price for a really solid boot. The oro original is a more tan instead of orange leather. But I've found on the job site it deals better with scuffs and stains. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Nice video. It would be cool if you’d do a follow up where the boots were cleaned up, conditioned and eventually resoled. Especially the Redwind and Nicks. Also do you have any recommendations for steel toe boots as my job requires them?

This is one of your best videos. I appreciate that you did show the boots after being worn. Hopefully, Tyler is cleaning them every so often. Once the Nicks and Redwings are ready for a resole you should do a video with Trenton and Heath. Next project maybe Tyler should test work pants or work jeans. It is great to see these boots in the real world.

Great video. I work in a warehouse and hear folks complain on the daily about foot pain. Most are wearing cheap sneakers or light duty ST shoes. I rotate through too many pairs of boots, but it makes a big difference in comfort. I prefer stability, support and firmness of a boot and would never want a lightweight, cushy sneaker for this purpose. Your point about the safety aspect of being sharper and focused when you're not thinking about foot pain is spot on though. When you're operating forklifts and other heavy duty equipment, it's super important.

Im about to start a new job been loving wedges but Im needing something for ladders. Timberland Boondocks are what im pretty set on style. The toe, shank, defined heel, water proof capabilitys. Im looking around $200. Anything I should look at Timberland Pro, Wolverine, Ariat Work, Keen, or maybe Danners. I just got burned on some Thorgoods soles lasted 6 months and luckily got them 50% off. I had Skechers last longer.

What it really is vs what you see online isn't always the same to me anyway. I do wish you would have swapped out those Redwings for Thorogood's. I don't think any boot is better then Nicks, however I do think Thorogood are a better boot then Redwings.

Great video, coming from my background Canadian, honestly "narrow" experience. I was lucky enough to stay in one job for most of my career. Im surprised at the amount of "work boots" that dont have safety toe steel / composite. Heck just for a site visit everyone has to have safety toes as a minimum, where ive been. For my personal use boots i custom ordered Steel toe Jim Green AR8's. They are not technically "certified" but im not actually on job sites anymore. 🤷‍♂️ When polished up you would never know they are steel toe. Anyways thanks again for the videos!! Cheers,beers and whiskey 🤠 🥃

I work in construction paving asphalt specifically and I’ve now seen a few people with brunts at work and I’m curious to see how long they actually last. I stepped up from the typical mid level redwing $150-$200 ish to thorogoods 1957 moc toe and it’s the first boot that my feet haven’t been sore in I’m going in to my second season with them and will probably re sole next winter.

This is a great video, and the perspective of a really good apprentice is a terrific idea. I represent Laborers. The problem we have as a trade is that we get a lot of lome, mortar, concrete, and asphalt on our boots. This destroys the upper faster than the sole. Any suggestions on the type of boots that can hold up to that type of work? I have trouble recommending $500 boots to Laborers only for them to find the premium leather has been eaten through by lime and sand.

I have a pair of Thorogood round toes im retiring because of a tear after 13 years 3 resoles. They last ok as an IBEW Wiremen unless your doing lots of deck work or working on your knees blowing out the toebox. The Whites Perry premium is a sweet spot for normal construction.

I'm not in the trades industry and just wear high quality boots because soft and squishy shoes tend to give me plantar fasciitis. I struggled with this a couple of years ago and once I started wearing boots just about every day I found my feet feeling better and better. For someone like me who works in a lab on tile floors all day, I stick to around $300 to $400 and I'm happy...stuff like Red Wing, Grant Stone, Wolverine 1k, etc. They're good enough for me and my purpose. However, if I needed a well built and more durable boot for a more physically demanding job then I'd have no issue spending around $500 for something that will offer the protection and longevity that comes along with it. Admittedly, I've never tried any of the PNW boots. They're probably way too much boot for me. But I can completely understand the need for them in certain types of jobs...just not for a lab geek like myself haha.
@scottulrich2725
@scottulrich2725 3 месяца назад
The PNW brands make a lot more than just hardcore work boots. They make a lot of beautiful boots that can be worn casually or in an office setting -- but, with the high quality and workmanship of the work boots. Yes, the entry price is high, but they will last forever and be incredibly comfortable after break in.

Where I work I have a steel toe and metatarsal guard requirement unfortunately I can’t wear the internal met guard without it pressing on a nerve in my foot causing all kinds of problems. I bought a cheap pair of wedge sole steel toes and fitted an external metatarsal to them. 10 days in and minimal pain, having seen success here I’ll wear them out and most likely purchase a good quality pair sbd do the same

Exactly. I have a few pairs of higher-end boots that are just too nice to wear to work, no matter how well built they may be. On the job, I swear by my trusty Thorogoods. Tough as nails, comfortable as a pair of sneakers, and after my first pair was finally ready to be retired after three years of hard daily wear and abuse, I replaced them with another pair of the same 6" steel-toe moc toes from the American Heritage line without hesitation.

I used to work three years on construction, where we were doing all kind of work. Concrete, digging, masonry, demolition and drywall. I was always wearing German military BW2000 boots that I bought used on ebay in “like new” condition, and they survived all three years. They were comfortable, water resistant, and protected my feet from sparks and all issues. On weekends I used to wear them on hikes and backpacking trips. I seriously don’t understand the desire to pretend that you really need 500+ dollars just for work. Now I have a decent boot collection, from Iron Rangers to White’s. But it is just like a hobby

I might try the JK 300 or forefront next, they don't offer a mic toe but then neither does Nicks, they just punch unnecessary holes and fake stitches into the top of the boot so if I were to buy Nicks I would avoid the "moc" moc toe.

Did he go in blind before his wear? Meaning you didn't tell him price etc, so he didn't have any psychological association with more expensive equals better? I am sure when it comes to this particular product its indeed the case especially between theses, but curious if his opinion was influenced knowing how expensive a boot was?

I really want some high quality steel toe boots, but all the best brands make stripper boots for some reason. I don’t need a 3” heel. I need something tough, with very good traction. Working in the oil field these nicks and whites boots are a no-go. Hope they make. Better model soon. Wedge sole don’t work either.

I have to have the absolute hardest sole boots out cuz of the surface I’m on everyday. Highway diamond grinder operator here so ground sharp concrete roadways. If you don’t know what that is, google it. But it’s sharp and unforgiving, rips any wedge boot apart in a few weeks, and if you drag a heel, they’re junk sooner. Best two boots by far in the thousands of dollars work of boots I’ve tested for this job are….Ariat overdrive xtr round toes and timberland pro endurance. Of course u replace the insole with timberlands orange thick famous insole for both boot brands and you’re set. But if u can’t send a staple into the sole you’re good to go. I’ve tried nicks boots and they were sole less in 5 weeks. Sold them. Red wing many types, sold them too. Danner, etc…no wedge boot ever will last. So it’s only a heel boot type of job, Georgia boots makes some really tough industrial soled boots too, but they’re really heavy. A good test I’ve found is if u can u wear them down with a 60 grit flap disc in a few seconds, they’re junk. U can’t with the two I picked and mentioned and I’m in them 12-17 hrs each day as there are never any less than 10hr days in my industry. Nothing stops our work unless it’s machine issues.

In Australia, almost every boot on a worksite is a steel cap, just weird to see that non steel cap boots are worn so much in the US

Some jobs require them but that’s a rare case. The added weight can lead to more injuries to the tendons and muscles in your feet as well as just being uncomfortable. Some jobs also require that you not have any steel caps or metal in the shoe, examples being fire fighters or maybe a case where the machinery is so heavy it would easily break steel caps and lead to more complicated medical treatment so better to avoid using steel caps at all.

How can you tell if theyre goodyear welted?
@CarlMurawski
@CarlMurawski 2 месяца назад
It can be tricky, but look for the small strip of leather (sometimes PVC) where the sole meets the upper. That is the actual welt, but some brands will put a fake on there like BRUNT. So it gives the impression that the boot is made with a much higher quality construction technique, though I find that deceptive...
